Foamy urine can be caused by a lot of factors, including releasing fast stream of urine, some medical conditions such as kidney disease and diabetes. Consult your doctor if you frequently pass out foamy urine with other accompanying symptoms.

Possible Causes of Foamy Urine
Foamy urine may be observed when a person passes out urine forcefully or quickly. This is because the speed at which the urine is released can cause temporary bubbles to form. Also, releasing a lot of urine at once can cause it to appear foamy. The presence of soap in the toilet water may also cause urine to take on a foamy appearance.

However, several medical conditions can cause your urine to be foamy in appearance. They include:

Dehydration
When a person is dehydrated, their urine tends to appear dark and concentrated. This can cause the urine to be foamy. Insufficient intake of water to dilute the other substances in the urine causes it to take on a foamy appearance.

Kidney disease
The kidneys filter proteins in the blood and these proteins help maintain a balance of fluids. Kidney disease can cause proteins to leak from the kidneys into the urine. The result is known as proteinuria, which means “protein in the urine.” Extra proteins in urine causes the surface tension of the urine to reduce, thereby making it to foam. This is similar to the effect that soap has on water. Proteinuria can be an early sign of kidney disease. Other symptoms may include:

itchy skin
breathlessness
swelling
unexplained fatigue
frequent urination
nausea and vomiting
If a person has these symptoms and a family history of kidney disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, they should see a doctor for testing.

Diabetes
Diabetes can also cause urine to be foamy. Uncontrolled diabetes results to more blood glucose molecules in the body. If blood glucose levels are way too high, the kidneys may have trouble filtering the molecules properly. This causes the kidneys to allow excess glucose and proteins to escape in the urine.

Also, people with uncontrolled diabetes can have symptoms such as:

Itchy skin
Dry mouth
Always feeling thirsty
Frequent need to use the bathroom
Unexplained hunger and fatigue
Diagnosis
To diagnose the cause of foamy urine, a doctor can test a urine sample to check the levels of proteins. If there are high levels of proteins, thorough confirmation may be carried out with a 24-hour urine test. This requires a person collecting samples of all the urine that they produce throughout the day.

The amount of albumin (a primary protein in the blood), is compared to the amount of creatinine (waste product) in the lab.

If the albumin to creatinine ratio is higher than average, this may indicate kidney disease or it may be an injury to the kidneys that is affecting the filtration process.

They may also request imaging, such as an MRI scan, to ensure that there are no problems with the structure of the kidneys.

Treatment for Foamy Urine
The underlying cause of foamy urine will have to be considered for the condition to be properly treated. Drink lots of clear fluids especially water if you are dehydrated. Keep drinking until the urine is pale yellow or nearly transparent.

If diabetes is the underlying cause, a doctor may prescribe oral medications or insulin injections to reduce blood glucose levels. Check your blood glucose levels regularly to keep them at an acceptable range.

A doctor may prescribe medications for people with early kidney disease. Positive lifestyle changes can be recommended by a doctor. Such changes may include:

managing blood sugar levels
controlling high blood pressure
eating a healthful, low-sodium diet
not smoking
exercising regularly
