Dear friends, this is a story I always want to tell. It is full of suspense and intrigues. Comments and criticism are welcome. Enjoy.

The Wretched Billionaire (c) 2018.

Tony politely approached his boss. He stooped as he made to pass an important message to the big man.
'The pilot says the plane will land in five minutes' time, sir. You are to fasten the seat beats.'
Chief Owoblow nodded without saying a word. He sipped the last liquid from his glass of champagne and placed the glass cup on the glossy, glass table. Tony cleared the drinks and the glasses. The executive jet had a small cabin where wines and the likes were stocked.
Owoblow wore a contended smile. It had been another successful business trip. For an important business trip such as this, he preferred to go by his private jet. Travelling to Dakar, Senegal, required that he must go with his best. That was exactly what he did.
He tightened the seat belt. The plane had started making its descent. Owoblow could see the landscape as it popped to his view. Lagos, here we come, he thought.
The aircraft made its successful landing and taxied to a stop. Chief Owoblow knew that his limousine would be waiting to convey him to his mansion.
The sleek car was a wonder on wheels. It cost several millions of naira to procure it. It was customised. All his cars were customised. Chief Owoblow was a very prosperous man. His business was booming. He was into many things including importation of essential commodities like rice, salt, sugar and automobile. He was very rich from his many businesses. He was a very successful man in all aspects of life.
Except one.

Where he had failed in life was the fact that he had not been able to have a child. At forty two, he had been married to his wife for seven years. Seven good years! All medical tests and results showed that nothing was wrong with neither his wife nor himself. What then could be the problem?
They had undergone series od fertility treatments. Even in the previous year, his wife, Helen, had gone for the IVF treatment. They had been assured that the treatment would work. Just whem the process was about to be completed, the consultant gynaecologist said Helen had weak uterus wall. It was discovered that she might not have a successful conception and delivery, after all. Then, they were advised to look for a surrogate mother, an idea which Owoblow seriously detested.
Helen would not mind giving the surrogate mother option a trial, but Owoblow was averse to it. To him, instead of another woman carrying his child, would it not be better he took another wife altogether?
In the past few weeks, he had been mulling over this idea, and he had started thinkinking it was a good one, although right now, he did not have a woman in mind. Getting any wife should not be a problem, as he had all that a woman yearned for.
Anothher idea came to his mind. Why not tell Lord Rava about his problem? Lord Rava and The Red Temple were instrumental to his getting stupendous wealth. It would not be an overstatement to say that he worshipped at the feet of Lord Rava at the Red Temple. Why had he not discussed this issue with the powerful spiritual man before now?
Right there, he decided he would discuss the matter with the man. The limousine had come to a stop at the front of the massive gate to his mansion. He had been so engrossed in thoughts he did not know they were home.
The driver blarred the horn of the car. Seconds later, the gate rolled to a side and the car was driven in. The man sitting on the passenger seat at the front jumped out of the car to open the car door for Owoblow. He got down majestically. It was good to be rich.
One of the house maids informed him that his wife went out. As soon as he got to his bedroom upstairs, he put a call to Lord Rava.
'Good day, Your Greatness,' he greeted the man. It was the standard way they addressed the man. 'Can I come and see you this evening, Lord Shiva? There is something very important I want to discuss with you.'
'You know you can always see me, anytime,' the man replied over the line.
'Thank you, Your Greatness. I will be in your place by nine o'clock, tonight.'

It was only a few minutes to eight in the evening. His house at Ikoyi would take under an hour to drive to Lord Rava's house at Ajah. Owoblow decided he would set out for the place later.

The 'great one', Lord Rava welcomed Chief Owoblow into his residence with smile. He soon ushered the man into the room of his inner sanctuary.
'Welcome,' he told Owoblow. 'I've been expecting you.'
'Thank you, your greatness.'
Without wasting further time, Owoblow told him his challenge. The listener did not for once interrupt. After Owoblow had finished, Lord Rava sighed.
'I've been expecting you to come around to discuss this issue', he started. 'You have come at the right time. Let me say this, you can not have any child as long as you have your wealth.'
'What!?' The shock was total on Owoblow's face. 'What're you saying, 'great one'?'
'What I'm saying is simple. For as long as you're in wealth, you cannot have a child or children.'
'Why?'
. 'That is your fate. That is what has been appointed to you.'
'But that should not be. Can't you do something about it, great one?'
The spiritual one sighed and shook his head. 'There's nothing I or anyone can do about it. Your choice is between the wealth or the children. One will go for the other.'
Chief Owoblow was distressed. But how come the great one never hinted him about this before? Why must it be that he could be have his heart desire? Were there not several people who had children and great wealth? Why must hos case be exceptional?
He must do something about it. He must have alternative solution.

As Owoblow was driven back to his residence, he was very convinced that he must look for alternative solution to his predicament. The main challenge now was what would be the solution. He thought of consulting another spiritualist. Would that not work? Yes, it would work. He would give it a trial. But who would be that spiritualist? Who would he consult?
For the past years he had been an adherent of Lord Shiva, and he knew no other person. He would have to find out who was a reliable specialist in the regard of child bearing.
The following morning, while at work, Owoblow called his Personal Assistant to his office.
'PA, I've called you for something personal, but very important,' Owoblow began. 'As you're aware, I've been married for years without a child to show for it. Medically, nothing is wrong with my wife and me. I mean, we've gone for series of tests which all revealed that we're okay.
'I'm thinking of spiritual dimension to it. I think what I need is spiritual solution to the problem.' Owoblow paused to observe the attentiveness of his listener. He could see that the PA was all ears.
'Do you anybody I can consult on this? Do you know any powerful native doctor?'
The PA appeared to be in thoughts for some seconds.. He nodded his head. 'Yes, sir. I know a baba. He lives in Ijebu Ode. He is a specialist in things like this. He would solve the problem in no time.'

Owoblow stared at his PA in wonderment. 'Tony, so, you have a solution to my problem all this while, and you didn't even hint me!' he exclaimed.
Tony was at his wits' end. 'But ...we never discussed it together, until now,' he stuttered.
Owoblow smiled wanly. 'Well, you're quite right. There was no way you would have told me this since I didn't bring the issue up. Now, this native doctor you have suggested to me, I must see him as soon as possible. If possible, today.'
True to his words, despite his busy schedule, Chief Owoblow went to see the recommended native doctor at Ijebu Ode, in company of Tony.
It was nor difficult to get the direction to the residence of the man as he was a well-known character in that area.
As soon as Owoblow and Tony settled down in the small sitting room, the old man welcomed them again and asked how he could be of help.
Owoblow told him his mission. He told him how, despite his stupendous wealth, something continued to be a source of sorrow, and that was his inability to have a child. The native doctor listened attentively and only interjected with monosyllables.
After Owoblow had finished his narrative, the old man brought out his strings of divination. He said he would have to consult the gods to know the cause of the problem and the solution.

The native doctor made some invocative words as he spread the srings on the mat before him. He looked at the strings intently for some time, made more chants and gazed at the strings again.
Owoblow, in turn, gazed at him and wondered what was going on in the man's mind. He waited.
There was a long pause before the old man finally spoke out.
'Your problem has a solution,' he said. Owoblow sighed in relief and gladness.
The old man nodded and went on. 'Yes, it has solution. It must have solution. Nobody has ever consulted me without getting solution to their problems. Nobody! Except I'm not the true son of my father, Eweje.'
Owoblow nodded as if he totally agreed with the old one.
The man cleared his thoat. 'The solution to the problem is simple. We are going to do a sacrifice. I will prepare a special sponge for you. With that sponge, you will take a bath in a flowing river. Once you do that and the other sacrifice is made, be expecting a bouncing baby in nine months' time.'
Owoblow was visibly glad. 'So, baba, how much will att these cost? Name the price.'
The old man appeared to be in thoughts for seconds. He then told Owoblow how much it would cost. Without hesitation, Owoblow brought out a bundle of notes that was much more than the amount the old man asked for.
'Baba, keep the whole money. When do I come for the special sponge?'
The old man was pleasantly surprised by the generous gesture of his client. 'You will indeed have what desire,' the old man assured. 'Come for the sponge in three days' time. I would have done the other sacrifice by then . The moment you used that sponge and sleep with your wife, no force on earth or under the sun can prevent you from having a child.'
Re: The Wretched Billionaire by FairCritic(m): 8:43am On Aug 10, 2018
Owoblow thanked the native doctor profusely as he left the place. Indeed, he felt happy and confident that things would work out well for him. He thanked Tony for the timely advice and his recommendation.
On the day he was to come for the 'special sponge', Owoblow was full of anticipation.
'Remember, you're to bath in a flowing river,' the old man reiterated as he handed the sponge to him. 'I've done the sacrifice that should be done. I'm sure, the moment you do this part, everything will work perfectly, the way we envisaged.'
'Thank you, baba. Thank you so much.'
Owoblow gave him a ward of currency notes. 'This is just the begining. If everything works out well, you will surely enjoy more of my generosity.'
'Do not say 'if things work', the old man quickly interjected. 'Things will definately work.'
Owoblow left the place a happier man. As he was driven back to Lagos in his jeep, his mind mulled on fatherhood. There was no doubt that he longed to become a father at the earliest possible time. His car was at Ikorodu axis when one of his phones rang.
It was 'the great one' that was on the line.

( Permit me to start by thanking you all for your interests, comments and encouragement. Thank you all, Nairalanders)

Now, to the story.

Chief Owoblow picked his call.
'Good day, Your Greatness,' he greeted.
'Good day, Chief Owoblow. How was your trip?'
Owoblow's heart skipped a beat. A trip? How did the man know that he was on a short trip out of Lagos? 'Well ... er, the trip was fine,' Owoblow stuttered in reply.
'Very good. I know you very much desire a child and I know you're gradually becoming desperate about it.'
Owoblow could not say anything. His mind was numb.
'Listen,' Lord Rava went on. 'Let me warn you. Do not do whatever the man you have consuled asked you to do. It will have dire consequences on you. This warning is for your own good.'
Owoblow felt the air in the well air-conditioned car was suffocating. He was dazed.
How did Lord Rava know about his plans and encounters? How did the man know about his visits and what transpired between him and the person he consulted?
Owoblow suddenly realized that he had a serious headache.

The headache Owoblow had was not a sympton of illness. It was a kind of headache he had any time he was under stress. Right now, there was no doubt that he was under a big stress.
The great one disconnected the line. Owoblow sighed. His mind was busy. He could not understand the rationale behind the warning Lord Rava had given him. Why must he not have what he desired? What was wrong in someone desiring to have a child of his own?
Later that afternoon, he decided e would go ahead with his plan. The old man said he must take a bath with the sponge in a flowing river. Owoblow remembered that one of the plots of land he had at Atan, Ogun state, was not far from a flowing river. He chose that place because it was far away from any prying eye.
By five p.m., he got things ready and asked the driver to drive him to Ota. From there, they went to Atan. The driver already knew the site of plot of land. Armed with a small bag that contained a soap bar, a face towel, a knife, a torchlight and the 'special sponge', Owoblow asked the driver to wait in the car while he headed for the small river. It was already few minutes to seven p.m., and darkness was fast approaching.

Owoblow soon sighted the river. He looked around. The environ had bush and shrubs as its inhabitants. He heard the whistles of birds from nearby trees and as they flew overhead. Apart from these, the isolated place looked like a complete isolated place, devoid of any humanity.

He went to the bank where the river appeared narrow. He then removed his clothes and had the bath he was instructed to have. When he was through, he wore his clothes and made his way back to where the car was parked. By now, darkness had almost enveloped the place. Thankfully, he had a torchlight handy.

He breathed a great sigh of relief when he settled in his car and the driver drove out of the place. He was glad he had succeeded in doing what the had set out to do.

The drive back to Lagos was smooth and fast, as he was driving against the traffic. By few minutes after nine p.m., he was in his expansive mansion. It was just about the normal time he usually came back home. He did not tell his wife about the particular efforts he was making, apart from the general assurances he was giving her.
As Owoblow ate his sumptuous dinner, he longed for the love-making he had been instructed to have with his wife the very evening he bathed with the special sponge.

After the meal, Owoblow decided to relax a bit in the sitting-room before he would retire to the bedroom.
He sat with his legs crossed on one of the sofas in the sitting-room as he watched the cable news, and as he sipped his fruit juice. Helen, his wife, came to join him on the lounging seat. Owoblow would have lingered longer in the sitting-room, but the very sexy nightwear his wife was wearing made him to find her irrestitible.
'You look damn gorgeous in that wear,' he commented.
'Really?' Helen feigned being surprised by his comment. 'But I've worn it before.'
'You look damn sexy,' he repeated and pulled her to himself.
He decided there was no need to waste time again. He then switched off the television set and led her to the master bedroom upstairs.
Strangely, he found himself eager for the act. It was as if it was his first night with him. Helen was ready for him too, and they had a fulfilling time together.
Just after the first round, he slept off. Helen let him be. He hardly went beyond the first effort, anyway.
Owoblow slept off in a way he had never slept before. This was a tip of the iceberg of what was to come.

The couple slept deeply afterwards. When Owoblow woke up, he found himself in a very strange place. He was lying on a bare hard ground inside a bush. He got up hurriedly and looked around. The place was lonely. He he rubbed his eyes, closed them and opened them again. He was still in the strange place.

Was this a dream or what? Was it a nightmare? From all indications, he was there in flesh and blood? How did he get here? He was clothed in pyjamas. He could not tell what time it was, but the specks of light showed it was getting to dawn.

Another realization hit him. Where was his home? Who was he? Where did he come from? He was thrown into a panic as these realities dawned on him. Indeed, he was perturbed that he could not even remember anything about himself.

* * *

When Helen woke up around quarter to six in the morning, she could see that her husband had already got up from the bed. He must be preparing for the new day, she reasoned. She dozed off and did not wake up again until six-thirty.

He was still mot in the bedroom. By now, he was supposed to have finished bathing and be dressing up. Helen sat up on the bed and closed her eyes for a short morning prayer. When she finished the prayers, she still didn'nt see him.

She yawned and got up from the bed. The en-suite bathroom was her first port of call. She tapped at the door.

'Darling, are you still there?' she asked. She rapped gently again.

The only answer she got was a defeaning silence. Where could he be? Sometimes, he used to go downstairs for early morning coffee or tea? Maybe he was downstairs. Helen descended the stairs, still in her night were. She saw the housemaid as soon as she got to the base of the staircase.

'Good morning, ma'am', the maid greeted.

'Good morning. Is my dear taking his tea or coffee?'

'No ma'am,' came the swift answer. 'I've not seen him this morning.'

Helen was nonplussed. So, where could he be? Could he have gone to the backyard? She went up back to the bedrrom, thinking that he would soon re-emerge from where he had gone.

It was dawn. Owoblow moved to his right on the bushpath. He sensed he could hear the sounds of moving vehicles not far away. He was right. After walking for about five minutes, the footpath led him to a broad tarred road. It looked like an expressway. He could not tell where the road led to. Then, he renenbered something, he remembered he was a Nigerian, but where came from or where he lived, he could not tell.

A motor bike was moving towards where he stood. He waved it down.

'Good morning,' he greeted the rider. 'Please, I'm kind of lost and I don't where I am. Please, which road is this place?'

The rider, a middle aged man, wearing kaftan looked at Owoblow curiously. He was trying to ascertain if the man dressed in pyjamas and standing by the roadside was sane or not.

'Please, just tell me, which place is this? This road, where does it lead to?' Owoblow's voice was plaintive.

The rider shook his head sadly and sympathetically. The man, from his English accent, was most likely a south westerner. Could he be a victim of kidnap, or ritualist or what?

'See, oga,' the rider said. 'This is Kano road. Where I'm coming from is Katsina. Not far from here is BUK, then Kabuga, then Kano. They kidnapped you from Kano?'

Owoblow's brow went up in concentration. Kano? Was he living in Kano? He shook his head. He could not tell. The problem was he could not even say anything about where he lived.

'I don't know where I live,' he admitted in perplexity. 'But I know I'm from the south west part of this country.'

Yacoub, the bike rider decided that the man he was talking with was not insane. Maybe he was in this state as a result of being drugged, or something, he decided.

'Alright,' Yacoub said. 'Get on the bike. I will try to help you.'

* * *
Two hours after she had woken up, Helen was yet to set her eyes on her husband. She had been up and down the one-storey bulding. She had opened and checked all the rooms in the edifice, including the guest rooms. She had checked all the toilets and bathrooms. She had also checked the garage. Still, there was no sign of him.

All his cars were in the compound. When the security man was asked if he had sighted him, the man replied in the negative. So, where was he? Together with the secity man and house maid, they searched the backyard and the whole compound.

Could he have been kidnapped? But how could that be? How would such abductors gain entrance into the house to carry out their nefarious activity? And without anybody being aware of it?

* * *
Yacoub took Owoblow to his house in Gyadi-gyadi quarters of Kano. The first thing he was asked to was to have a bath. Yacoub then gave him a t shirt and brown trousers to wear.
