Lagos residents awoke, on June 7, to the startling news report of a 45-year-old man, Sunday Jacob, arrested for allegedly having illicit sex with a seven-year-old girl. The following morning, a similar, but more bizarre story broke. Philip Benson, 37, was arrested for impregnating his 12-year-old daughter.
In the past couple of months, Lagos residents have been startled by scores of reported cases of paedophilia across the metropolis. Suddenly, what used to be viewed as an alien occurrence associated with the Western world, has jarringly and repeatedly happened closer to home, and parents are getting worried.

Unreported cases
Parents have every cause to worry, considering that experts believe majority of such acts go unreported for fear of stigma, or for financial gains.
“That is just the ugly fact,” said Ikechukwu Onyekwere, a public affairs analyst. “Most times, parents do not get to find out about such acts, and the children just live with it throughout their lives without ever revealing the abuse to anybody. And it’s not just girls; I know a friend who was sexually abused when he was 11 by a housemaid, and of course he never told his parents.”
Anthony Okoye, the chairman of residents of a public building in Ijesha, Lagos, had invited the police to arrest a 30-year-old tenant who was accused of defiling a 15-year-old daughter of his neighbour, and was jolted by the reaction of the girl’s mother.
“To my utmost surprise, they came and started insulting me for taking the man to the police,” he said. “They said I was too rash. What else should I have done when the man confessed to rape? They eventually settled the case when he agreed to pay N60, 000 to the girl’s mother.”

Affecting our culture
A snap survey revealed that parents, especially among the high and middle-income groups, have begun to take protective measures as regards who their children are exposed to.
“The truth is that the whole thing has made me begin to distrust anybody that is not a close friend or relative around my daughters,” said Ifeoma Akanwa, a banker and mother of three. “I used to have a house boy, and since he left last year, I have been reluctant to get another help, despite that my youngest child is just a year old. I prefer taking her to a crèche, or even locking her up with my eldest child (aged 10) at home at times.” Uwadiegwu Otisi, a sociologist holds the opinion that this portends a dangerous trend, and might fracture the fabrics of Africa’s familial culture if left unchecked.
“The unfortunate fact is that people have started distrusting everybody that comes around their children,” he said. “I know a case where a woman even avoids leaving her small daughter alone with the girl’s step brothers living in the same house. It has become that bad! And the implication is that these children will grow up disconnected with people that ought to help shape their lives. And then what happens to the proverb, ‘One person does not train a child?’”

Assisting the victims
Experts state that children who suffer abuse are likely to have serious psychological hang ups later in life, if not counselled properly. They also advice that efforts should be made to avoid publicity when such events occur, although not at the risk of letting the perpetrators go scot free.
For us at Project Alert, we are primarily concerned about the welfare and wellbeing of these little girls,” said Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, the executive director of Project Alert, a Lagos-based nongovernmental organization that promotes and protects the rights of women and young girls.
“First is taking them away from the environment where the abuse occurred, and taking them to a safe place; appropriate medical care and counselling for them. Also of immediate concern side by side with this, is prompt arrest and prosecution of the victims.
While the details of the young victim should be kept secret, so as to protect them as they grow up, that of the rapists, should be made public, and should remain throughout the period the case is in court until the time judgement is given. That way, it will serve as a deterrent to others. The media has an important role to play in this.”

UNICEF Nigeria’s position
Geoffrey Njoku, a communication specialist at the Nigeria Country Office of the UNICEF, said the organization would continue to work towards ensuring the protection of children from all forms of abuse.
“Over the years, UNICEF has supported the establishment of the appropriate legal framework/structures in parts of the country and capacity development of law enforcement agencies to handle all protection issues against children,” he said. “UNICEF would like to see a Nigeria where all rights are accorded to all children all the time.”
While parents hope for the day when Nigerian children enjoy the full repertoire of rights accorded to them in the Child Rights’ Act, they gradually come to the realization that they need to take the protection of their children from predators such as Messrs Jacob and Benson into their own hands.

Silly people talking about paedophilia being a 'Western' thing. Paedophilia is legalised in the North, isn't it?
Let them deal with Yerima to serve as a deterrent for others.
Re: Paedophiles Invade Lagos by AloyEmeka5: 9:52pm On Jun 20, 2010
How do you define paedophilia?. If the set legal age for marriage in the North is 9, then the men sleeping with girls 9 and above are not paedophiles because they didn't break their local  laws. From your perspective, tell us the cut off age that is appropriate for someone to be involved in a marriage?. The 18 and above thing was determined by westerners and did not ask Africans how they feel about it. Many Islamic nations have lower age limit for sexxual intercourse and marriage.

IMHO
i dont think it has to do with western laws but rather when does a child becomes a woman ready for marriage.
if anyone out there believe that, at 9yrs old, A CHILD is a woman ready for marriage then we do have a serious problem on our hands!

Is poverty the reason for paedophilia in the west since they have the money to toast women and can access free women online?. How about the women who are paedophiles, are they also sexx starved too?

are you trying to insinuate that adulthood in Africa can be 9?! or better yet 12?!
to me, any human under 13 is a child, any human being from the age of 12/13 till 17/18 could be considered a teenager and anything above could be considered an adult.

also, lets remember that SOME human being mature faster or stay childish longer. . . . . . . . the catch would be that the majority would fall under these ages.

Men who allegedly defile underage girls seek escape route

AKINWALE ABORISADE

They are respected adults. They are trusted to be good custodians but the two, a father of three and a school teacher, in different circumstances, betrayed the trust reposed in them by allegedly defiling underage girls, writes AKINWALE ABORISADE

A four-year-old-girl, Pelumi and Adekunle Adeniyi, rapist

advertisement

The story of Adekunle Adeniyi, 35, astounds his neighbourhood. Perceived by many of his co-tenants and others in the area as a devout Christian, Adeniyi was respected and loved by many. But many of them don't anymore.

In view of his vocation as a driver, those close to him said that they would ordinarily have written him off as a tout. "But his conduct did not betray him as such," one of his neighbours says.

But behind his gentle nature and outlook are wild inhuman traits that nobody identified in him until now. Adeniyi is now rotting away in custody over an alleged defilement of a four-year-old-girl called Pelumi.

On this particular day, Pelumi, the unsuspecting little girl, was home in the company of her elder brother, Adewumi, after taking her meal. The day had been bright for her until Adeniyi, who had been away from home returned from his trip to Lagos.

The man had sent her elder brother on errand to buy him 'moin-moin.' While he was away, Pelumi was in Adeniyi's room. According to her, Adeniyi asked her to come close and put her on bed. The young girl told SUNDAY PUNCH, in Yoruba, "He first put me on his lap and later put me on bed. Then, he asked me to close my eyes. I did, but I quickly opened my eyes and screamed as he tried to insert his penis into my vagina. He used his organ to push my pants aside and tried to force his thing in. It was painful so I shouted."

Pelumi said that the man left her to go after a failed attempt. She later informed her elder brother who in turn reported the matter to other neighbours. Barely an hour later, the landlord sent for him. He was asked to explain what transpired between him and the young girl. The landlord and other neighbours had intervened because Pelumi's parents were not at home at the time of the incident.

Adeniyi however denied the allegation, saying, "I did not do anything of such. I had sent her brother out and I asked her what she ate. This is the way I joke with her and other kids in the house. She was shy, but she told me that she ate beans. I gave her money (N5) for biscuit. I was sitting on the chair and I only placed her on my left leg. She later went out of the room to buy biscuit with the money that I gave her."

The suspect said that he sensed conspiracy against him in the matter. But why would anybody set him up? Adeniyi said that he could not decipher why. He says, "I did not have any trouble with the family or with anybody in the house. My wife has always maintained peace with everybody so there was nobody I could finger in the matter.

"But it surprised me that the little girl insisted that I tried to defile her. It must be the devil trying to set me up, but much as I am innocent of this allegation I know that the God I serve will deliver me."

The embattled man said that he was home alone at the time of the incident because his wife and children had travelled for a ceremony. According to him, he had just returned home from a trip to Lagos after many days and had planned to go for prayer retreat after taking his meal. But that plan was short-lived as he was soon called to answer to the allegation levelled against him.

The news was shocking, as well as devastating for Victoria, Pelumi's mother. She said that she got the news from Abeokuta where she was working. Before long she had arrived to see the condition of her daughter.

The incident was reported at the Agugu Police Station, Ibadan, and he was arrested for interrogation. The police said that the little girl had been taken to the hospital but there had not been any clear medical report to support the allegation. However, there are indications that Adeniyi would soon be charged to court.

Victoria explained that she was always shuttling between Ibadan and Abeokuta just as much as her husband. She says, "We were not at home at the time the man did it." She says that her daughter was not known to be a liar and that there was no basis for the girl to have insisted that the man abused her if he otherwise did not.

Adeniyi believes that the allegation against him was either masterminded by the neighbours or by the devil in order to frustrate and disgrace his family. He said after all that there was nothing to show that he assaulted the girl as claimed, adding that he had no basis to descend so low to do that since he was happily married with a wife that could satisfy his sexual urge.

In a related development, Olawale Omoniyi of Agugu area Ibadan lodged a complaint to the police that his 12-year-old-daughter, Olamide, was assaulted by her teacher. The young girl alleged that Sunday Adeleke, a teacher at Ishola Nursery and Primary School, Baba Nla area inserted his finger into her virgina. He was said to have attempted it on a few occasions in the past.

When quizzed by the police, the suspect confirmed the allegation. He said that he already promised the girl that he would marry her. Olamide said that her teacher had warned her not to tell anybody about it. She however told her mother as she could no longer bear the act. She has since been taken to hospital for treatment.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State, Ms. Olabisi Okuwobi, who confirmed the two cases, said that there were increased cases of assault of underage girls in the state in recent time. She said that within the last three months, three cases had been reported. Okuwobi opined that men who slept with underage girls or babies should be taken for medical check-up as the act was abnormal.

Dr. Adeoye Oyewole, Head of Department, Psychiatry, University Teaching Hospital, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osogbo said that men who slept with underage girls were victims of mental illness.

He said, "This is pure mental illness. Those suffering from it are paedophiles. It may happen to people who have head injuries where their sexual control is lost. Their discretion as to who they may have sex with may have been lost in the process. In some cases genetic factor or upbringing may be responsible. Sometime ago in the United States some priests were abusing children. Also when a man's sexuality has not been trained he can misbehave."

He said the religions only attempted to suppress sexual urge in people, but failed to train the people to have control. Oyewole however says that the illness is treatable on the ground that "our sexual expression is a learned expression in spite of the fact that instinct has a part to play."

A major way of overcoming the tendency, he said, was to have "self control."

Two primary school pupils accuse driver of despoil

Sesan Olufowobi

A commercial bus driver, Musa Adegboye, is in police net. Police accused him of using N50 as bait to have intimacy with two minors, 13-year-old Bimpe (not real name), a primary four pupil of Araromi Community Primary School, Ibadan, Oyo State, and her friend, 10-year-old Bola (not real name), of the same school.

L-R: Bimpe, Adegboye and Bola

advertisement

But Adegboye told PUNCH METRO correspondent that, "Well, since the girls said I was responsible, I have accepted my fate."

The suspect's alleged shifting of attention to Bola after repeated sex with Bimpe, according to the police, was his undoing. It was learnt that two days after defiling Bola, the pupil described as very active in class became inattentive and was sleeping most of the time in the class. This prompted her class teacher to make inquiry and the girl opened up.

"It was at this point that she confessed to the teacher that a friend of hers in the same class, one Bimpe took her to the house of one Musa Adegboye and the man defiled her. She said the man gave her N50 after the sex with her," Oyo State police spokesperson, Bisi Okuwobi, said.

It was learnt that the school immediately called the attention of policemen from Agugu police division who subsequently arrested Adegboye.

"Police initial investigation showed he had done the same thing to Bimpe. He gave her N50 at the time he had sex with her too. We also learnt that Bimpe got to know Adegboye because her elder sister, Nafisat Akeem, was Adegboye's former girlfriend. While the relationship lasted, Bimpe was going to the suspect's house with her sister. After her sister's marriage, the girl continued going there and that was how it started," Okuwobi said.

However, Adegboye told our correspondent that the accusation by the two girls was strange to him. "I find it ridiculous that anybody believes them. Well, I have accepted this incident as my destiny. There is nothing I can do," he said.

But Bola insisted that it was Adegboye that had sex with her, "It was Bimpe that said I should follow him to her brother place to play. It was there that this brother, (pointing to Adegboye) had sex with me. He then gave me N50 and told me not to cry," she said.

Bimpe also accused Adegboye of having sex with her when our correspondent asked her. She said, "Yes, he used to have intimacy with me."

But Adegboye denied, "I did not have intimacy with them, I merely played with them."

When asked why he allowed the two girls to always come to his house at 11am and to shed light on the kind of play he enjoyed with the minors, Adegboye said, "I am always less busy at that time. I usually drive a car belonging to another driver and usually by that time (11am), he will be driving the car. So, if they come to my house from their school why should I send them back? And like I said they like to play a lot especially this Bola. It is just normal play."

When also asked why the normal play usually took place in his bedroom, Adegboye said, "It is because the girls are accusing me that you are talking like this."

However, a medical report from Adeoyo General Hospital, Ibadan, showed that while Bola was recently deflowered, Bimpe had lost her virginity a long time ago. When the report was shown to Adegboye, "Well since the girls said I was the one responsible, I have accepted my fate. But anybody could have done it. And if they said it is me, so be it," he said.

Okuwobi said Adegboye would be taken to court to prove his innocence.

When will Nigerian journalists learn the ethics of their profession? Media communication law and ethics--especially in the developed world--prevents any journalists from divulging the identities of victims of rape except they willingly and freely choose to do so. What's more, these victims are minors. Some day, these media houses and their journalists would splash on newspages and internet sites the names and images of sexual abuse victims who know their rights only to be prosecuted for doing so!

A' Ibom: Father who impregnated his 12-yr-old daughter, says: She seduced me • Promises to appease the gods
By CHRISTOPHER OJI

Thursday, June 24, 2010
A 50-year-old man, who allegedly impregnated his 12-year-old daughter has criticised those who are blaming him for accepting to be the biological father of his daughter’s baby. Philip Ben, a native of Itam in Akwa Ibom State, was unrepentant, as he hit back at the crowd which abused him for committing heresy.
[img]http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jun/24/sun/ben-rape[1].gif[/img]
Ben

advertisement

Hear him: “Who among you has not committed any sin, let him cast the first stone. I am a Christian, an usher in my church (names withheld). I know what it means to offend God, by committing abortion. I didn’t want to kill either, the baby or my daughter I love so much.”

When asked if he knew the implication of being the father of his daughter’s child, he retorted: “I know the implication quite alright. It is abomination in my town, Itam, the devil has already put me to shame. I will go home to perform the necessary sacrifices and life goes on. I believe God has forgiven me. “I won’t mess up with her again. I am ashamed of myself, but the devil deceived me.”

On when he started making love to his daughter, he blamed her for his action. “I did not dream of doing such a thing. Please, pray against such temptation, it can happen to any man. I just came back from work that fateful day and was so tired. I came inside the room and met my daughter stark naked. I started admiring her and felt like a man and the devil took over. I did it, but I wasn’t the one that deflower her. She had been doing it before.”

He also countered the claim that the girl was 12 years old. “I am her father, I know when she was born. She is about 15 now. Don’t mind what she was saying. She also claimed I did it with her severally. That is a blatant lie. I only did it four times and that is why I doubt, if I am the real father of the unborn baby. She has other boyfriends.”

According to him, he had parted ways with the girl’s mother and married another woman, who died few months after she was delivered of twins. “This my daughter, who brought disgrace to me was living in the village, before I brought her to take care of the twins. She succeeded in seducing me. She is to be blamed for this disgraceful act.” The man who also blamed loneliness for his immoral behaviour said if his wife was alive, the incident wouldn’t have happened.

However, his daughter (names withheld) has maintained that she was drugged by her father the first time he had canal knowledge of her. “I swear, he gave me something that looked like hot drink. After drinking it, I became weak and slept off, but I knew he was doing something to me. I could not do anything as I was weak.”

She said the following day, her father apologized for his action, but still slept with her. “He begged me for forgiveness, claiming to be having problem of loneliness. It was a neighbour who noticed that I was pregnant. I told her what really happened. I told her that the pregnancy belonged to my father and that he was the one who deflowered me. Since then, I have not made love to any other man apart from him. He did it severally. I can’t remember how many times. It was on daily basis for almost one year now.”

Girl, 11, with HIV/AIDS, accuses man, 47, of ra*pe
From GARBA MUHAMMAD, Kaduna

Thursday, June 24, 2010
A 47-year-old butcher, Sani Aminu, from the popular Tudun Wada abattoir in Kaduna has been arrested for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl.

http://odili.net/news/source/2010/jun/24/521.html

The suspect is said to be specialized in raping pupils inside the animal shelter behind a collapsed fence of a government primary school close to his place of business in Tudun Wada, a suburb of Kaduna metropolis.

Nemesis caught up with him when a teacher alerted the parents and the authority of the school the 11-year-old Hauwa Abubakar and another 10-year-old Nusaiba Kabir, both pupils of primary two, to their frequent absence from school.

The teacher, who does not want his name in print told Daily Sun that she noticed that the two pupils had not been attending classes regularly for sometime. She further said: “I decided to ask other pupils in the class when I discovered that the two girls have been absent in class for so many days.

“They said they used to see Hauwa Abubakar around the school after assembly.

“This raised my suspicion so I went to the children’s parents who also expressed surprise about their absence from school, because according to the father, there isn’t any day he has not sent her to school.

“The girls later confessed to have been absconding from school to the abattoir to satisfy the sexual urge of the suspect, Sani Aminu.

“As a result the shocking revelation, other teachers and I set a trap for him and asked the pupils to play along and go to their usual rendezvous where he normally rapes the innocent pupils. “Our bait was successful as we watched from a hidden place and witnessed how he gave them N50.00 and ushered them into the isolated place to rape them.

“That was how we caught him and handed him over to the leader of the abattoir who took him to the police.”

One of the victims, 11-year-old Hauwa told Daily Sun that, “Sani Aminu on three occasions ordered his boys to forcefully carry us to a remote place where they rear cattle. “He will then come and remove our dress and force his private part into us.

“He threatened to kill us if we tell anybody.”

The Education Secretary (ES) of Kaduna South Local Government Area, Alhaji Sanusi Surajo, in his determination to get to the root of the issue, took the two girls and the suspect in company with policemen for an HIV test at Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital. The 11-year-old Hauwa Abubakar surprisingly tested positive to HIV, a situation that has raised a critical question of how she contracted the virus and from whom, considering her age.

“The doctors also said the two pupils cannot leave a normal live, because he (the suspect) has inflicted a permanent damage to their private part. “In fact, I was surprise when I learnt that the parents of the children have been undergoing pressure not to pursue the case. ”We have been carrying out sensitization workshops to the teachers on child-sexual-abuse and HIV/AIDS in our schools. That is what helped us to discover this incident in a good time,” the ES said.

The suspect, Sani Aminu in an interview said, he is married with nine children, four boys and five girls.

He confessed to have only raped the two girls three times but begged for leniency. “I admit to committing the act on those two children anytime they are sent to buy meat, I used to force them into a place where we keep cattle and take turn to rape them.

“But I don’t know what got into my head,” the culprit said. A private medical practitioner, Dr.Hassan Ibrahim when contacted at Bibal Hospital , advised that the culprit should be taken for psychological examination to ascertain his mental fitness.

This, according to him, had become necessary because a normal human being who would not want his own child to be abused would not commit such an horrific act.
