Wenger agrees to educate Nigerian coaches
By Adekunle Salami
Friday, 25 Jun 2010

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has agreed to visit Nigeria for seven days to educate Nigerian coaches on modern tricks of the round leather game and the best way to identify hidden talents in the country.

This was the outcome of his meeting with Nigerian officials on Thursday at the Redisson Hotel, Sandton, Johannesburg.

Wenger met with the Nigerian representatives led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alhaji Ibrahim Bio.

Others at the meeting were the Director-General of the NSC, Patrick Ekeji, and a former skipper of the Super Eagles, Austin Okocha.

After the meeting, Ekeji told our correspondent that the deliberations went well with Wenger.

Ekeji said, “Wenger is passionate about Nigerian football and he believes we can do better in the future if we work towards that.

“He has agreed to be with us to give our coaches useful tips to help our young players. Football development is vital and we just have to embrace it.

“We know that Wenger is a coach that grooms young players and that is what we are looking at in Nigeria at the moment.”

Wenger however urged Bio to contact the management of Arsenal for a convenient time that will be fixed for the programme.

“The meeting was okay and I believe we can work it out soon,” he said.

Rubbish! 'Coach' is not our problem.
Arsense eagle or whatever he call himself knows nothing about African football. Isn't it obvious that all the foreign coaches that led african teams to south africa messed up. We Nigerians understand ourselves than any foreigner.
The same people that invited Wenger will criticize and abuse him by the time he picks 10 players from the south and may be 1 player from either west or north. Our problem is tribalism!!!

.

Take it or leave it, our major problem is 'Coach'.
A right and good coach instills confidence, commitment/dedication on his players and gets good results.
By the way, has any local coach ever won a trophy for Nigeria?

1980 Nations Cup-Foreign Coach
1994 Nations Cup-Foreign Coach
1996 Olympics-Foreign Coach.

So, tell me where lies our local coaches now?
We should stop deceiving ourselves and face the realities.
Our coaches need to be educated seriously but 7 days are not just enough.
Let our good for nothing NFF send them to leading foreign clubs in Europe as apprentices.

@oisehumen

Spot on

Theirs an arrogance that’s been killing Nigeria slowly they have the same thinking as the English people…. Sven Goran Ericksson got England to 3 quarter finals but people felt an Englishman would do better but he was replaced with an Englishman and they failed to qualify for Euro 2008. Now they have Capello… The same with Nigeria they think they are better than everyone…. Am sorry 7 days is long enough it’s a “crash course” its not a university degree, a lot could be learnt in 7 days, every summer they are coaching course being organised by top coaches around Europe, but our coaches are LAZY the NFF should require all the club managers to go for a course or a refresher course every 2 years…

See how you are letting your ignorance just spew out. You have show that you know absolutely nothing about football or coaching so why don't you keep your opinions to yourselves.
On a serious note, The NFF should sponsor all our local coaches to got to Europe and get a UEFA Pro License and a UEFA A-License.

The swedish man that went away with #250m took the position of our local coach.
As for those I ruled out, the players then were skillful and talented on their own.

Local coaches definitely need to be exposed to the best and greatest techniques and technicians from highly developed and burgeoning leagues.

But this 7-day thingy is Nigeria's fire brigade approach!!! Totally futile!

What we need is a thoughtful, robust and strategic 4 to 7-year development plan. Not some yeye chat with Arsene Wenger in a hotel corridor. Haba! Dem swear for una?!

When will we ever learn?!  angry

The Bafana 2x of S/A employed a foreign to train their players for months. Isn't it surprising that Italy was thrown out of the group?

Its a seminar geez. Do you know what a seminar is?

Come on, grow up and learn the tactics of football.

In case you forgot, Ghana which has a better league than us and yet don't they have a foreign coach? Algeria has a local coach, were did that get them. Look at Egypt, they haven't gotten to the World Cup in decades.

FOOTBALL IS MUCH MUCH TACTICAL THAN YOU AND I KNOW, ITS VERY METHODICAL AND PROCEDURAL, ITS NOT LIKE THE "KICK AND FOLLOW" THAT WE GREW UP PLAYING. ITS NOT ALL ABOUT YELLING AT THE PLAYERS OR MAKING ANIMATED AND EMOTIONAL REACTIONS ON THE SIDE LINE JUST TO SHOW THOSE WATCHING AT HOME THAT YOU CARE. AS A COACH YOU MUST KNOW THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF YOUR PLAYERS, KNOW THERE PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE AND HOW TO INTERACT WITH THEM AND GET THE BEST OUT OF THEM. IN OTHER WORDS, WHAT IS GOOD FOR "GOOSE MIGHT NOT BE GOOD FOR THE GANDER".
YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO MAKE TOUGH CHOICES. For example, let's say your best striker is misfiring, what do you do knowing that even the best strikers go through rough patches? Do you continue playing him and hope that he fights through it or do you bench him instantly and ruin his confidence. This is what happened to Italy in the world cup in 1982. The coach decided to stick with Paolo Rossi and he went on to win the world cup for them despite the fact that rossi had been worse than yakubu in the first few games. As a coach, you can't afford to be impatient. You can't make substitutions because you are angry or you might miss an opportunity to win.

WHEN IT COMES TO TACTICS, THERE IS A REASON BEHIND EACH FORMATION, OR SUBSTITUTION. FOOTBALL IS NOT LIKE THE silly "MONKEY POST" THAT WE GREW UP PLAYING, ITS LIKE A CHESS MATCH, ONE HAS TO BE ABLE TO READ THE GAME PROPERLY AND ANTICIPATE YOUR OPPONENTS YOUR OPPONENTS MOVES THIS COMES FROM HAVING WATCHED YOUR OPPONENTS VERY VERY WELL AND KNOWING THERE WEAKNESSES, THEN COME UP WITH A STRATEGY TO WIN THE GAME AND THE TACTICS TO USE TO CARRY OUT THE STRATEGY. AS A COACH, YOU MUST NOT ONLY BE ABLE TO READ THE GAME PROPERLY BUT BE ABLE TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS ON THE FLY. DID I FORGET TO TELL YOU THAT SOME OF THE TACTICS CAN BE VERY COMPLEX DEPENDING ON THE SITUATION. IN THE PREMIERSHIP, YOU MUST AT LEAST HAVE GOTTEN YOUR UEFA PRO LICENSE AND YOUR UEFA A-LICENSE BEFORE YOU CAN EVEN BEGIN TO COACH AND YET VERY FEW PEOPLE ARE AS GIFTED AS THE WENGER AND CO. LOOK HOW MYSTIFIED JOHN MENSAH WAS ABOUT HIS COACH'S TACTICS HERE
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/soccer/world-cup-2010/writers/jonathan_wilson/06/24/ghana.tacticaloverview/index.html

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY I LAUGH WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT AMODU WAS BETTER THAN LAGERBACK OR THAT WE SHOULD OVERHAUL THE ENTIRE TEAM AND PUT IN AN U-17 TEAM. WHICH SERIOUS FOOTBALLING COUNTRY DOES THAT? ARE THOSE YOUNG PLAYERS ABLE TO STAND UP TO THE PHYSICAL RIGORS OF THE MORDERN GAME OR ARE THERE SKILLS GOOD ENOUGH YET? SOME OF THIS GUYS HAVE NOT EVEN STARTED PLAYING REGULARLY FOR THERE CLUBS.  FOR THOSE WHO ARE ALWAYS SCREAMING FOR HOME BASED PLAYERS, DO YOU KNOW HOW BACKWARD OUR LOCAL LEAGUES ARE? THIS GUYS HAVE NO FACILITIES, THE LEVEL OF COACHING AND INSTRUCTION IS POOR, THEY ARE NOT EVEN WELL CONDITIONED OR WELL TRAINED ENOUGH, NO TACTICAL UNDERSTANDING, NOTHING AT ALL. LOOK AT BRAZIL WITH ONE OF THE BEST LEAGUES IN SOUTH AMERICA AND YET HOW MANY LOCAL PLAYERS DID DUNGA BRING? NONE. NOW COMPARE THAT TO OUR OWN PATHETIC LEAGUE. UNA THINK SAY FOOTBALL IS ALL ABOUT DRIBBLING 4 PLAYERS THEN LOSING POSESSION TO THE FIFTH PLAYER. YOU GUYS ARE JUST IGNORANT.
Re: Wenger Agrees To Educate Nigerian Coaches by member479760: 8:32pm On Jun 25, 2010
Now, we need action and not a tea meeting at the corridor of the most expensive hotel. One of the conditions to get this job is the ability to solve this math. Applicant must be able to provide input data, for example, ball speed to calculate the angle in the picture.

i guess they want him to come and teach our already curropt men in power and position how to make more money from our losses, presently devastating state and eroded sport system rather than come to teach them tactics.
come to think of it, these rogues need tactics to steal more

Re: Wenger Agrees To Educate Nigerian Coaches by TruMantra(m): 9:59pm On Jun 25, 2010
Guys, it's a seminar and in my opinion is a good "start". Afterwards, we can do as someone suggested and ensure that our coaches have recognized coaching licenses that at least ensure that they are up to date in coaching methodology.

FIrst though, we need to rid the NFF of the jokers that currently run it. Sanni Lulu and Bolaji Ojo-Oba have got to be dismissed.

Na so, so talk we dey talk for here. Let's start a petition to the sports minister to dissolve the executive commitee of the NFF. If we can get several thousand people to sign on to that, we might have a chance.

Finally, we need to decide if we are keeping Lagerback or not. if we are, let's start to prepare for the ANc in 2012. There's another one in 2013 as well so we have a lot of competitive games ahead of us. That's good.

If we are getting rid of the Swede, let's go with Siasia and give him a target for the semi-finals of Brazil 2014 right away.

till they send our coaches on attachment programme for nothing less than 3 seasons to understudy some of the best coaches and learn the intricacies of the game,

forget it,
