The Igbo apex socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has described Senate President, David Mark as hater of Ndigbo for calling for a state of emergency to be declared in the South East.

Arising from an emergency meeting in Lagos on Thursday, the President of the Lagos State Chapter of the organisation, Chief Oliver Akubueze said that declaring state of emergency in the region was unnecessary as there was no breakdown of law and order.

He said while Ohanaeze was strongly opposed to the issue of kidnapping, the Senate president went too far in his recommendation.
Akubueze said the issue of kidnapping had become a national problem and that Federal and State governments should collaborate to eradicate it.

His words: “We, the members of Ohanaeze, condemn in its entirety the statement by Senate President that state of emergency should be declared in the South East geo-political zone because of the issue of kidnapping. While we strongly condemn the spate of kidnapping, we reject the call by David Mark because there is certainly no reason for that. There is no breakdown of law and order in the region.

There is no violence. Then what is the reason for the call for the state of emergency? As a statesman, David Mark should be above playing to the gallery or making statements that have the capacity to provoke anger in a people that has been managing themselves with fortitude.”

Akubueze noted that kidnapping was not peculiar to the Igbo as it is a national phenomena.
According to him, David Mark should come out in the open to declare his mind about the people of the region instead of hiding under kidnapping to make hate statements, adding that on several occasions there had been breakdown of law and order in the other parts of the country and he did not call for state of emergency.
Contributing, the leader of the Igbo in Ikeja, Eze Uche Dimgba expressed disappointment at the call by the senate president.

According to him, Igbo leaders were cooperating with law enforcement agencies to fish out the bad eggs in the region. Eze Dimgba said from origin, the Igbos were not known as kidnappers, adding that the state of the economy and the utter neglect of the region in terms of federal presence contributed to the crime in the region
He said David Mark should ask himself from his days in the military up till now, how many projects, federal governments had cited in the South East.

“David Mark is one of the problems of the South East region. When we talk of marginalization, his name is very conspicuous. We have not forgotten some of his statements as a military officer and a minister of communication. However, I know that Nigerians now know better. We are against kidnapping and we are having sleepless nights over it but it is only a hater of Ndigbo that can call for a state of emergency because there is simply no reason for it. When people are being killed like fowls in the other regions, what did he say? Was he sleeping then and is just waking up.”

Senate President, David Mark, has come under fire for his call on the Federal Government to consider imposing a regime of emergency rule in the states of the South East where kidnapping has become intractable.

Reacting to the Senate President’s position yesterday, Chief Charles Ahize, the leader of Obigbo, a pan-Igbo socio-political group, said Mark was either anti-Igbo or has yet to appreciate the reality on ground as it related to the menace of kidnapping.

Ahize, who spoke in a telephone interview, wondered “why a high-ranking officer of the Federal Republic, as senior as the third citizen of this country, would display such utter lack of sensitivity and total ignorance over an issue that is at the heart of the continued co-existence of the various groups in the country.”

He asked: “On how many states of other zones, where they have made it a habit of wasting lives with gusto, and at regular intervals, has the Senate President called for the imposition of state of emergency?”

Is it not before our very eyes that all manners of religious bigots make several other states ungovernable? How many of those other places did they impose emergency rule? Why must it now be in the South-East that everyone is talking of imposing state of emergency, even as the authorities have yet to offer any sustainable solution to the problem at hand?”

According to Ahize, the solution to the problem of kidnapping in the South East zone, especially in Imo, Anambra and Abia, lies in both men and material. “Although it is a tough decision to make, I think the first step to solving the problem would be for the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo, to post out all the policemen in those states”, he said.

The reason for this, he insists, is that the police know the kingpins of this menace and have become a part of the problem. “They are always shielding these people. They wine and dine with them everyday and are even on the payroll of some of them.

Ahize said it was only after the police leadership had addressed this problem of its personnel that it could then take up the issue of equipment and gadgets with which the policemen need to function effectively.
“Hoodlums can’t be roaming over the place with sophisticated weapons and you’ll be expecting the baton-bearing policemen to arrest them with his bare hands, Ahize said.”

He continued: “The whole place is swarming with police checkpoints and roadblocks but you discover that from one checkpoint to the next one – sometimes, just 25 metres away, there is no walkie talkie or any communication gadget to link them.”

He said the Federal Government, rather than consider the “insincere calls for the imposition of emergency rule,” should genuinely try to address the problem.” “Sometimes,” he pointed out, the solution could even lie in just fixing the federal road that cuts through an area.
“The solution can never be emergency rule,” Ahize stressed.

It's only natural that he'll be attacked for saying this, Whether he is an Igbo hater i don't know about that, but things haven't gotten to the level where a state of emergency has to be declared in the whole geo-political zone!
Re: Thief Senator David Mark Under Fire From Igbos by mki: 3:47pm On Jul 16, 2010
Mr. Mark looks to me like somebody who talks before he thinks. Last time he called Muammar Ghadaffi a mad man. It is time he realised that he is no more an army general but a foreline statesman.
Re: Thief Senator David Mark Under Fire From Igbos by Mortiple(m): 4:24pm On Jul 16, 2010
This is least expected from the man that occupies the NO 3 POSITION of our country. This indeed exposes his ignorance, hatred and shallow perception of Igbos. No wonder, the National Assembly has remained adamant to pass the bill for creation of additional state in the South East to tally with other geo-political zones that have 6 states already.

If you do not want state of emergency in your region, tell your wards to stop kidnapping and pick up a dignifying job,  what the heck!!

Are you the one that will give them jobs? Where are the dignifying jobs? Why was a state of emergency not declared in the South west because of the spate of political assassinations there? Is kidnapping not also going on in the S.west e.g Ondo state and S. South? why was South East Singled out?

Must Igbo man be found in all manner of dirty jobs, ranging from importation of substandard products, 419 business, to rituals, now kidnapping because your brothers in Niger Delta did theirs with expatriates and got scot free even with rehabilitation under the guise of presidential pardon for the repentant militant, accompany with training and salary. All white men are now wiser you are channeling  your power and might on fellow Nigerians to make quick money.

May God forgive you; the lost tribe of Israel.

How could that be? ibos have been kidnapping people and eating them for centuries. It's only recently they do it for money. They probably still eat people anyway.

The usual blame-others-but-not-me game of Igbos is becoming legendary.

Are they the only facing neglect from FG or their own is more pronounced than other regions?.

You have a cancer eating deep into the fabrics of your society and destroying your ancenstral land and the only thing you can say or do is to blame others for it.

All you Igbo haters can go to hell for all I care.

And to all the Igbos who believe in One Nigeria, you can go to hell as well.

State of emergency? I don't think so. David Mark should declare state of emergency across the middlebelt and North where his people are getting slaughtered like chicken non-stop before talking about SE.

@Aigbofa and his fellow arewa men  grin grin

. . .crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery has been on d increase in d east(atleast visibly now),crimes such as men molesting and despoiling underage girls which is seemingly becoming increasingly rampant, takes place in d west by yoruba men and political violence-2010 is almost here and all d number of yorubas dat will die in d west here will be higher than d number of people dat have died as a result of d increase in kdnapping and robbery in both d south-south and south-east combined. . .Political thuggery and assasination has already began in d west. . .we will all be here 2 count d number of dead . . .so,just ride on grin grin grin grin grin grin

Udezue,

I am tired of these Igbo bashers in this country. They blame every social ill on the Igbo. So much hate for our people yet they cannot bear the fact that if we go, Nigeria would be nothing! I dun tire for these Yorubas. They are very wicked people who believe in do or die politics.
Re: Thief Senator David Mark Under Fire From Igbos by udezue(m): 7:02pm On Jul 16, 2010
EzeUche, no mind them. If na good stuff going on they'll tell u ethncity does not matter but because the issue is a negative issue they want to single out the Igbo for punishment. When we ask for it then they'll know its needed. They tried the same rubbish under Obasanjo in Anambra and it didn't work. This 1 will also fail.

Wrong. It was not announced when kidnappers were running around in Rivers, delta, Bayelsa and Ondo. It was not announced in the north even as they kill themselves up until today.
