Forty-nine lawyers have sued the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at a Federal High Court, Abuja.

They alleged that the anti-graft agency has been protecting former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Yahaya Mohammed led other lawyers to sue the EFCC.

They condemned the EFCC’s handling of the Halliburton bribery scam.

They are seeking the leave of the court to apply for an order of mandamus to compel the EFCC to probe Obasanjo and others for their alleged involvement in the scam.

The motion exparte is brought pursuant to Order 34, Rule 3 (2) of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2009; Sections 5 and 6 of the EFCC Act, 2004, and the inherent jurisdiction of the court.

Some Nigerian officials fingered in the scandal allegedlly received bribes from the United States-based company to boost its chances of getting the Bonny Liquified Natural Gas project.

The action violates the Corrput Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, and the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act of 2004.

Former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa (SAN), had on

April 21, last year, inaugurated a five-man committee, chaired by the former Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro, to probe the Halliburton bribery scandal.

He claimed that the evidence tendered in a United States court was under the seal.

He averred that there was the need for the committee to work with the security agencies abroad to unseal the evidence before it could be tendered in a Nigerian court.

Members of the committee were the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri; the representatives of the Directors-General of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA), State Security Service (SSS), and that of the National Security Adviser.

The committee was given eight weeks to complete the assignment and to submit its report to the President.
Since its inauguration, no report has been publicly presented by the committee.


Okiro, who also chaired the committee, has since retired from the police.

The US has jailed some top officials of the firm over the scam.

Aondoakaa was accused of deliberately stalling the probe for his alleged personal interest.

In the application filed yesterday, the applicants recalled that Obasanjo refused to honour the invitation of an administrative panel raised by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, which submitted an Interim Report sometime in May, last year.

Mohammed said: “From the interim report, some prominent Nigerian officials, including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, are suspected to have been deeply involved in the Halliburton bribery scandal, ”

He is protected because foolish people like u abound in nigeria but the time has come now to remove the veil over your faces for you to see the real light,not the light that wuruwuru pastors and imans are showing u but the light of responsibity,accountability,rationality and practical reality.

Guys be wise this is a plot from IBB he knew quite well that the only person that can stop him from going to ASO ROCK come next year is OBJ so is finding a way of bringing him down.Anyway if OBJ is not guilty let him appear before EFCC,therefore the recommendation of OPUTA panel can now be used against IBB.Also he will be prosecute for annulling June 12 election and the gulf oil money he stole.

The EFCC is under the control of the President. The President decides who the EFCC goes after and who it doesn't. That has been made clear by events of the past couple of months. If anything, they ought to sue the President for not demanding the EFCC go after those manipulated in the Halliburton scam.

At least Aondoakaa promised us that something would be done.The present President has yet to say much on the issue, even with the revelation we received on this issue. EFCC only seems to do the president's bidding, so I believe it is best to attack the problem at the root. . . start at the top!

This is just a waste of their precious time. Who set up EFCC in the first place? What about IBB, Abdulsalami Abubakar and all those who have plundered and stolen the wealth of this nation. What about the corrupt Judges especially katsina Alu (Alu in Anambra means Abomination).

The joke of the century was when General Obasanjo said he's open to be investigated by the EFCC, and Mr. Ribadu came out and said General Obasanjo had been tested and the result was NEGATIVE. .
