Yes, that's absolutely correct! It can and not only tongue cancer but all sorts of cancers due to the Carbon content in the food.

Smoked foods are toxic and carcinogenic therefore, people should be careful especially, those with history (i.e. hereditary) of ca. in their family. This is because, carbon can easily reactivate or trigger dormant ca cells in their bodies thereby causing this horrible disease.

Hope people understand and, try to keep away from such foods especially when there's a history in your family. We know it's tough/difficult to do when most of our foods are smoked based e.g. smoked dry fish/crayfish, smoked bush meat, smoke yams/plantains, goat meat (burnt skin), cow legs, kpomo, suya etc but for your life, you have to try and keep away from them as there are other satisfying foods one could eat.

People need to be aware of the reasons why many young people die early these days. Cancer cases are on the increase. Smoked foods, fried foods, junk food all are bad to health. They are the major causes of colon cancer. Colon cancer is the number one killer disease in the world today. 95 percent of deaths in the world today are as a result of colon cancer. So, run away from smoked, fried, roasted, baked, salted foods.

the 95% must be refering to planet mars. If not its a then I suggest you check your source(brain inclusive)

@OP,
I think maybe the professor was refering to smoked animals made via burnt tyres which I wont doubt to be casinogenic.
but if its about the regular fish meat and co, I think its a remote possibility.
All said and done, I still have some in the kitchen uncooked and God knows am cooking 'em ASAP before they give another report about casinogenic soups.

I don't know anything about cancer or its risk factors. But I know our ancestors had little or no cancer cases because of the following:
1. They ate pure, organic foods as most grew up on the farm and never tasted any canned, frozen or processed food, maggi or artificial spices or sugary food. So their immune systems were well built up.
2. They trekked a lot (no cars or bikes) so did lots of exercises. Also they did a lot of hard labour on the farms.
3. They used plenty herbs and they were able to mix them properly and carefully then unlike today.
4. They had lots of morals grin

5. The women breastfed for up to 2yrs at times. I know many elderly people who were breastfed for more than 1year.
6. Pollution was low in their time. Now we have got all these radiation-emitting gadgets such as phones.

I guess all these pluses made up for any negative effects of smoked food. These are not applicable today so that may explain the tongue cancer thing and the increase in risk factors. We can't compare their time with today, so many things have changed.

I think you need to slow down on your claims. Any food technically can be said to be toxic as your body have to rid of it waste via your kidney. So on that note all food can be labelled as Toxin. Yes, smoked food can be carcinogenic - have potentials to cause cancer - but there are other factors one have to take into consideration. Even a genetic predisposition do not necessarily mean that one will have a full blown cancer.

Carbon? Activate cancer cells? Lol You are one funny dude. Cancers have several factors, and not all the time do just one of them triggers it. In fact, most cancer are a result of combined factors from environment, immune system, stress, down to toxins in the water we drink that get accumulated over the years. (Abi you go scare people not to drink water again?)

Also it may be worth that a few races are just "almost resistant" to things that cause cancer in others. So while our diet may be composed of smoked foods, we may not be susceptible to it due to generation of forefathers eating same diet. Just a thought.

On balance, you are right, these smoked foods are carcinogenic.

Oh thanks for your correction! Actually, what I was trying to communicate here (as shown in the highlighted part of your post) is the link between burnt/charred foods (not necessarily smoked foods though they can cause ca, as you've testified) to carcinogens/development of full ca in human bodies.

Understand there are other factors to consider when discussing this issue e.g. lifestyle, environs, hereditary etc - that's what I was trying to inform (but ended up focusing on hereditary, as if the only factor) so that people will be mindful on how they live their lives.

Anyway, its all about informing and educating people and not about our expert knowledge in this field sure, everyone has their own area of speciality, don't you reckon!.

People. . especially medical professionals need to be careful about what they say. Or maybe reporters have taken his words out of context.

Even though what he says is true. . . it is not very common.

It is like saying if you run, you will trip over a stone, knock your head on a huge rock and die. It can happen, but its not that common.

LOL with the cow meat most nigerians eat, that was burnt with car tires i am not surprised. people are indirectly eating toxic waste, na wao almost every thing causes cancer these days, i even heard in a documentary that eating red meat of any sort can give you cancer. shocked

Last time I check, cancer was a rare disease in Africa. At least, not a frequent affliction as it is in the west. Or am I misinformed?
