Lewa the police is a vital part of any government, its a shame out legislature and law makers don't take this seriously. imagine if we have modern day police men in Nigeria with the right ammunitions and gadgets to fight crime. Do you think we will have all this day light rubbery going on now by this thugs? this is a good move by OBJ administration, I hope the next president take this serious.

Is it ford and bmw trucks that would reduce crime?Once again;wrong priorities. The landcruiser jeeps bought in 2000;where are they now? They are all scrap;they could not be maintained because of our apathy towards maintenance.
Odeku~spending billions on trucks ain't the solution~people are hungry, jobless, cannot pay school fees, homeless, hungry and disenchanted with this government!

. . . so give them money to eat today and pay schoolfees for this term, then what?

true talk that jeeps won't solve the problem, but dont let us miss the fact that security is also important and will spur a lot of other things to happen.

bros! That money could be spent on welfarist programs!Fees for indigent students could be paid, outstanding pensions and gratuities retired, market women and the unemployed without the means to start/fund their busineeses could be helped! The ploice has a budgetary allocation every year which under the regime has almost gone up 100 fold in comparison to previous governments;yet crime has not abated!
I hope you are not suggesting that i mean the money should be shared?

my apologies, but that was how it sounded to me.

the issue of security is more than the budget can handle currently hence the need for the extra funding, the truth is that the police dont have enough facilities to do their jobs, and there will always be counter arguments as to what the funds could be used for - I'm sure the argument could be made that all the money we get be spent on a single sector, and it would be justified, but the truth is, there will always be an opportunity cost associated with anything done - by the way, pensioners of naija airways are being paid this wk and next. let the govt prioritise in a way that most if not all the needs are met to a reasonable extent.

Bros! The 1500 trucks supplied in 1999 are nowhere to be seen now;ditto the thousand peugeot 306 cars bought to "combat"crime! So far deplorable and enabling factors exist for crime to be committed, all these efforts are in vain. The basic problems are never loked at in solving issues in Nigeria. In developmental policies, there is what is reffered to as a "bottom" approach ie you tend to look for immediate and remote causes and start solving from there! The FG has been making noise over these pensions, gratuities and entitlements!Should they not have been paid out first as in decent soccieties?ASUU is on strike;the hospitals are decreprit;power non-existent,unemployment unabated;inflation galloping~however its BMW and Ford trucks that is next!
Misplaced piorities'an insensitive and indifferent government is the albatross on Nigerias neck.
My humble take
Re: Police Get 1000 Jeeps For Elections by debosky(m): 2:25am On Apr 20, 2007
you are not completely accurate - the 8 teaching hospitals have refurbished into centers of excellence (according to the reports that is), ASUU salaries and grants have goen up over 100% since this govt came in (fact I know), inflation is not 'galloping' things have remained stable macroeconomically. not that I am giving this current govt a well done score, but there have been some sincere efforts which are sometimes overlooked in the heat of the moment, truth is, maybe it wasn't the best approach, but sometimes you need an interim measure to help before the whole problem can be solved.

Bros~i have friends that work in 4 major teaching hosplitals in Nigeria and i happened to visit them during my last visit home in 06~UCH,LUTH,ABU and UBTH!Yes almost 25 billion has been spent on the procurement of CTscans,MRI machines and the refurbishing of the major 8 hospitals;but rather its stil a tale of woes.
For example LUTH has no functional clinical laboratories~medical investigations like blood analysis and such need to be done in outside laboratories! The whole hospital does not have a functioning ICU;ie intensive care unit and the surgical theatres are nothing to write home about!Ibadan fares better, how many people can afford to deposit 50k naira before admission into the icu;pay 50k for MRI scan or 30knaira for CT scan!Staff morale in the medical field is low;just recently salaries were cut in consonance with their so called reforms.Yearly at least up to 500 doctors migrate to SA,UK,Australia and Canada for greener pastures.
As Olu Falae said on the news of Yar'Adua's collapse;if the hospitals are so much in a fantastic state why was he rushed abroad~why not National Hospital Abuja or Gwalagbada Specialist Hospital in Abuja or better still Ibadan or LUTH?
ASUU is on strike because the accord between the association and the FG that would review salaries periodically, spend at least 10% of the budget on education and fund universities so they could compete favorably internationally was not adhered to!Yes salaries were increased, but its a pittance compared to what colleagues earn in private universities(govt officials own);and what obtains else where!Universities are not well funded, graduates are not well trained, laboratories and teaching facilities deplorable. This i know from first experience because grand-pa and his sibilings retired from the academia! This is no biggie;funding for tertiary education is a shame in Nigeria~public tertiary colleges in Ghana,Gambia,Botswana fare better!
but there have been some sincere efforts which are sometimes overlooked in the heat of the moment, truth is, maybe it wasn't the best approach, but sometimes you need an interim measure to help before the whole problem can be solved.
Cannot really say~World Bank puts us as one of the Heavily indebted poor countries(HIPC),and also as a strong member of the Low Economic Inpact Countries(LEIC).ie countries that are unstable, volatile, poor with no attempts at capacity utilization to shore up the collective potentials of her people! That sums OBJS 8 years and i leave you with this reference http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/guest-articles/why-obasanjo-is-pleased-by-nigeria-s-pro.html!
