How To Organise Credible Election In Nigeria by fred4alabi(m): 1:24pm On Aug 13, 2010
To organize a credible election in Nigeria such that anyone can aspire for any political post of his/her dreams without any fair of Godfather or party but simply based on personal record and agenda.

There are several ways to organize a credible election but all have their advantages and disadvantages, but i will enumerate the easiest and most conducive.

Firstly, let us highlight some of the problems of election and its flaws;

1. Manipulated voters register - paves way for main problem
2. Rigging - the main problem
3. Multiple voting
4. Inadequate ballot papers.
5. Transportation of ballot papers and officials
6. Non - counting of ballot at center - leading forged results
7. Others

The power to conduct and organize a very credible, free and fair election is firstly vested on the president of the country and the ruling body in appointing a very credible candidate with positive mind, to head the electioneering process as the electoral chairman.

Things that should be done;

A computerized system and software can be used to generate required output. The items required are;

1. An input pad for voting, containing all voting party’s symbols and candidates names.
2. A laptop with voting software installed which houses voters’ register database for that pooling booth.
3. Internet connection to transmit voters identity and votes to backend server
4. Printer – to print voting information for voter and to print overall result.
5. Back end servers located at INEC office to house all voters’ registration information and results.

Procedures;

1. Voters’ register is thoroughly vetted by INEC and cross-vetted by parties and observing bodies
2. Voter enters pooling booth and is asked to stamp any of his/her finger on input pad by the computer speaking the voter’s preferred language of communication and also verifies his/her eligibility to vote in that booth from the laptop and backend server via internet.

3. After authentication, voter is given a random number from the number of all voters voting in that booth. This number is only known to the voter.

4. Voter is asked to vote for preferred candidate on the input/voting pad by stamping his/her finger on the preferred candidate or party logo (also speaking voter’s chosen langiage)

5. Once done, voter is asked to press ‘OK’ if satisfied with vote and the vote is sent to the laptop and backend server for counting.

6. Voter is printed a voting result stating his/her random number and party voted for as confirmation.

7. At the end of voting, overall result is printed by electoral officer displaying total numbers of voters that voted, their random numbers and party they voted for.

8. Voters are asked to verify their voting slip information against vote result to ascertain if truly, their vote is correctly counted.

9. Gathering the results from all voting centers, the result must tally with that of the backend server and thus all voters must have ascertained that their vote is properly counted and winners can be announced immediately on the same day of election.

With this method;

1. No ballot paper or ballot paper exhausted case
2. Cost of ballot paper is eliminated
3. Rigging is minimized if not eliminated
4. Voters can vet their votes
5. Voter get results first before they can be manipulated
6. Transparency is practiced
7. People will have more confidence in the voting system and in Nigeria.
8. Voters count their votes before INEC and can even announce results before INEC
