The Federal Government will launch the redesigned N50 commemorative note and non-circulating coins by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on September 29 at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yayale Ahmed has said.
President Goodluck Jonathan is to interact with selected women, children and persons with disabilities on September 17 at the State House Abuja as part of the 24 activities lined up to celebrate the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary.

Represented at a world press briefing on the Nigeria at 50 Celebrations by the Director General, Nigeria at 50 Committee, Mr. Babakura Kaigama, he said the decision for the currency to be in circulation or not remained with the CBN but would be disclosed to Nigerians at a later date.

He said the various activities lined up for the celebrations of Nigeria’s Golden Jubilee would present opportunity to celebrate its achievements, even if modest in political and economic spheres. Yayale called on Nigerians to see the anniversary as a tool for strengthening the structures and values that promote democracy, good governance and good neighbourliness, enhance the process of our democratic consolidation and most importantly, open boundless opportunities to all Nigerians to be part of the evolving socio-political and economic advancement of the country.

Other programmes included in the calendar of the celebration activities include, Anniversary Lecture: “ICT Age, its Implication for Nigeria and Africa”, billed for September 14 at the Transcorp Hilton, Nigeria International Investors Forum from September 15 to 17 at the Banquet Hall, State House Abuja, Cultural and Historial Exhibition from September 15 to October 3 at the Velodrome National Stadium Abuja and Children Parliament and presentation of prizes to winners of essay competition on September 17 at the International Conference Centre.

Others are, public debate tagged “Nigeria at 50: Celebrating Resilience” on September 18 at the Transcorp Hilton, Youth Parliament on the morning of September 21 while the anniversary golf tournament will hold in the evening of September 21 to 26 and the IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja. There would also be the flagging off of special Argungun Fishing Festival Motor Rally from Eagles Square by President Jonathan and four teams comprising Sokoto, Bauchi, Ikenne and Onisha would be participating, kicking off from their respective states.

Other activities include Africa at 50 High Level Policy Dialogue featuring all 17 African countries that attained 50 years of independence this year, road show (float), cultural activities (Durbar and Masquerade), gala night, Miss Nigeria Pageant, commissioning of Independence Tower where the Nigerian flag was first hoisted on October 1, 1960, launching of the compendium of Nigeria, food week and 50th anniversary children’s Party by the First Lady, Colloquium on Nigeria’s leadership in the world, seminar on women, children, youths and other vulnerable groups in national development: 50 years after. Presidential banquet and conferment of national honours on 50 distinguished Nigerians, anniversary parade as well as the commissioning of Ford Foundation new office building in Lagos/roundtable on Governance in Africa.

Re: Fg To Launch Redesigned N50 Notes, Coins For Independence Celebration ! by Redman44(m): 1:39pm On Aug 27, 2010
I really don't understand what we are celebrating? Instead of launching a redesigned N50 note, why can't the Federal Government launch 50 stamps that have the faces of our innovators, past heroes [ Soccer, arts, media, military, business etc ] and historical figures on them? Why are people that strove for our independence not put on our stamps so that people in other countries can learn a bit of our history through NIPOST? Na wa o shocked shocked shocked

The reason why the 50 naira note is being redesigned is simply because there are fake 50 naira notes in circulation, which are hard to distinguish from the original. Good move I say.

Is this what is next for us to worry about while people are living in darkness, bad road being driven on, and many has no job?
Misplaced priority is a disease

[b][size=18pt]Why should we re-design our N50 Notes?  Is this really a need Is it our priority right now? This is only a way to steal more money from us, people!!! Greed, greed and greed! What's wrong with these Politicians and their hangers-on?

Is the Independence day 1st October, 2010, going to be Nigeria's Armageddon day or what
Is the 1st October, 2010 not like any other day?

Why can't these foolish politicians get their priorities right for a change Why can't they think with their brains instead of their a r s e s for a change in their life time? Sick, sick, and sick!!!!

People are dying and starving of hunger, there are no jobs for unemployed graduates, our hospitals are like sick bowls, there are big crates or big holes in the middle our express roads at least, these are needs to be attended to yet, they are talking about re-designing a currency that does not need any thing done to it - what a wasteful bunch of evil people - your days shall come and our God will repay you all!! Just wait!

Why only #50 note, they should redesign the whole currencies, demolish all the federal secretariats in Nigeria and build new ones to reflect Nigeria at 50. Every property of the federal should be redesigned to reflect Nigeria at 50. Ndi ara!!!. Come to think of it, how do you expect Jonathan to raise money for his and his parties elections

The CBN says the N50 with six numbers and that with seven numbers are not fake. So where did you get your theory of "fake N50 notes"? Only a retard like you will be counterfeiting N50 when there is N1000 & N500.

To me there is noting wrong in celebrating a golden jubliee, its golden jubliee guys! whether we have done well or not, we can still celebrate hope that we are already seeing in some of our leaders eg jonathan fashola adams etc, and i dont think d present Goverment dont have priorities, roads railways electricity agriculture education etc are all getting attention, believe me next year it will just be low key celebration.
Re: Fg To Launch Redesigned N50 Notes, Coins For Independence Celebration ! by marvix(m): 12:08am On Aug 28, 2010
Why do we consider the funds meant for celebration a waste because there are other pressing needs. Maybe we need to ask ourselves this question, the amounts earmarked and setaside for roads have they been utilized and properly utilized same goes to all other sectors.

Nigeria can only be 50 once in a life time and being 50 is worth celebrating, whether we celebrate or not, would not affect the budgeted amount for infrastructure, as a matter of fact if they celebrate some jobs would be created for Nigerians jobs that would be lost if we decide not to celebrate and the amount earmarked for celebration would only be embezzeled in convincing manner once diverted to another use.

My main concern is to see prober utilization of the money budgeted for the celebration.
