SIR: Dr Olatunji Dare must be commended for writing the book: Diary of a Debacle which chronicles the events leading to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election and beyond.

Abiola’s travails up to the time of his eventual incarceration spanned the regimes of Generals Ibrahim Babangida, Sani Abacha and Abdulsalam Abubakar. However, one is puzzled that while Generals Babangida and Abacha have been vilified by the print media - and rightfully so, General Abdulsalam Abubakar has come out of the crisis largely unscathed.

It must be stated that Nigerians are forever pained by the failure of General Abdulsalam to make the release of Chief M.K.O Abiola a top priority of his regime when he took over power on June 8, 1998. Chief Abiola died in prison custody on July 7, 1998 (30 days into Abubakar’s reign) without ever being convicted by a court of law.

If Abiola had been promptly released on time, he might be alive today. For this grave lack of intuition and wickedness, General Abdulsalam Abubakar stands eternally condemned on the pages of history.
