The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) says the administration of former military President, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, has the “worst human rights records in the annals of the country’’.



The NBA president, Mr Joseph Daudu, stated this yesterday in Lagos at the presentation of a book entitled: “Fundamental rights enforcement in Nigeria (2nd Edition)”, written by a Lagos lawyer, Mr Femi Falana.


Daudu noted that Babangida rode on the crest of human rights into office and “yet his regime surpassed other regimes in human rights violation”.

He also advised Mr Ogbonna Onovo, the Inspector-General of Police, to submit himself to the law following a contempt of court charge slammed on him recently by a judge.

“Onovo is not above the law. If he thinks that no police officer can arrest him, then he does not know the law. If Tafa Balogun could be arrested by policemen, Onovo should also know that he too can be arrested because no man is greater than the law,” Daudu said.

Mr Osagie Obayuwana, Edo Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, expressed concern over what he called enforcement of civil rights in the country.

He said, corruption and enforcement of fundamental human rights are twin problems facing this country. There is a direct relationship between the enforcement of socio-economic rights and corruption.

The book reviewer, Mr Wahab Shittu, said the book was a true reflection of the current state of the law as heralded by the enactment of the new Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules of 2009. He said the 361-page book would teach Nigerians about their rights and what to do when the rights were violated.(NAN)
