The Federal Government says it plans to set up cashew processing plants in four states of the country to add value to the product and create employment, wealth in the country.

Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Ogbeh said the move would also reduce the waste of cashew fruits and delay in the export of raw nuts out of the country.

According to him, we are currently wasting an estimated 8 million tonnes of cashew fruits annually.
He said the long term solution to the delay in export and stocking of cashew nuts at the ports is for Nigeria to be an exporter of finished products and not raw materials.

Ogbeh listed the states where the plants would be set up to include Enugu, Benue, Kogi, and Oyo.

“The challenge is usually access to credit because a good processing cashew line will cost you about two million dollars to do something like 10 to 20 tonnes a day. We are targeting that to set up at least one plant each in

Enugu and Benue, two plants each in Kogi and Oyo state, these are the leading cashew producers now.
“We want to assure the cashew stakeholders that in our next level activities, we intend to stop the export of raw nuts and to process all our cashews here and we hope by the grace of God, to have one or two plants ready before next year.

“We are talking with the Brazilians now. We want to bring in machines from Brazil to process the cashew fruits into juice which has a high content of vitamin c.

“It is very good for the health because we are currently wasting an estimated eight million tonnes of cashew fruits annually, throwing them away,” he said.

Ogbeh added: “That is what the Cashew Association of West Africa told me, in Nigeria alone, that we waste eight million tonnes.

“This is our concern, we are very troubled with this development but later in the year, I will have meeting with the cashew producers and farmers association to sit down with the CBN and get some help.’’

The minister, who lamented that the country has been major importers of goods and services, said government is determined to changing the trend.

“The challenge facing Nigeria is that we have been an importer nation which has destroyed our economy.

“We want to change now and become a nation of exporters.

“We have to find unorthodox ways of finding capital for those who want to grow these industries because on their own, it is impossible for them to meet the conditions of banks and financial institutions.

“It is impossible for them to raise the necessary capital which is why the CBN initiatives are very important to us and we have been working with them and we are achieving results.

“The treasury of Nigeria including the CBN has to find a way to bypass the obstacles, the mountains, the rivers, blocking our way to industrial growth.

“If not, we will remain perpetually poor and we will remain permanently incapable of creating wealth and creating jobs for our people,’’ he said. (NAN)

Leave states to process their cashew as lands belong to state government.

Clear the farms of herdsmen and allow people to cultivate crops.

This might be land grabbing to gift herdsmen lands.

Even sef, why are you people always obsessing over deaths, destruction and negativity? Must every discussion under the sun be about your sadness, unhappiness and doom and gloom portion in life?

Why is the govt trying to do everything?

A good proposal will be spoilt by govt itself. This should be a private sector driven venture.

Provide security, light, roads and reasonable taxes, allow states manage their resources and see how this country will blow. Foreign investors will be falling over themselves to come here.

Its good that its being addressed. Nigeria needs to focus on value added products. I hope its private sector run. This should be addressed holistically with export processing zones for agro processing. That's was part of plsn with ERGP if I remember correctly.

Alot of Nigeria products rots because of storage. The opportunity for food processing exist if inputs are cheap. Then he can also encourage farmers to form co-ops.

A private company should be given incentives like tax breaks for it to invest .We have a history of government owned enterprises failing due to corruption, poor over sight and outright incompetence of its managers.

Ogbeh listed the states where the plants would be set up to include Enugu, Benue, Kogi, and Oyo.

But meanwhile in other news...

Nigerian exporters have raised the alarm that cashew nuts valued at $300m (₦108billion) have been trapped at the Lagos Ports and called on the federal government to come to their aid by addressing the challenges of congestion and inefficiency at Lagos’ ports, which have affected exports.

The exporters said gridlock and inefficiency at the ports of Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos, delayed shipment of 50,000 tonnes of cashew nuts and is threatening this year’s output as traders are cash-strapped.

President of Nigeria Cashew Exporters Association, Tola Fasheru told Bloomberg.com that the fruits from last year’s harvest should have been exported by January.

He said:

“Instead, they are still in containers on trucks waiting to enter the ports or on wharves"

“Roads to Lagos ports are badly congested, with hundreds of lorries queuing to enter the premises and either deliver or pick goods. In addition, inadequate capacity and infrastructure, stifling red tape and corruption are hampering export processes"

“There is a palpable lack of synergy among the port operators and this is affecting the business of our members"

Some members of the cashew association, he added, have defaulted on contracts to the extent that foreign buyers are now walking away from them.

He continued :

“They are no longer willing to give us fresh contracts,” said the group’s president. The delay is likely to affect the output target of 260,000 tonnes for the current season, which started in February and will end in July.

“Not one single cashew exporter is in the field now as he is owing on contracts and as a result has no money to operate with"

It is people like you that Audu Ogbeh can deceive.

Please tell me who in this country does not know about all he said. Who does not know that we import practically everything in this country.

Now ask, as a govt what has he done. How can a minister be complaining that if they stop importation of tomato paste that people will start shouting. Are they not the govt again?

The problem is that instead of making the environment condusive for local production of various items by providing security, roads, electricity and reasonable taxes etc they go ahead to ban what is being imported when local production of those goods are still suffering from double taxation, herdsmen killing, lack of electricity and good roads which becomes double jeopardy for the citizens.

Coming to tell us what we all know makes no sense at all.

Who is affected more? Is it not the farmers?

Why wouldn't Nigerians be obsessed with the killing of farmers when their government refuses to do anything about it?

The Federal Government should help us to clear the Apapa gridlock to ease the export of the cashew seeds.
What the minister is saying is far from what is on ground, Mr minister save us the delayances and let the FG respond to the Apapa gridlock.

Most of us are not working or being enrolled for the N-power, it's business like cashew we subsist on.
