social work in nigeria is Charity so they are basically NGO some of fictitious, glory hunting ngos  some jobless people set up, whilst some are actually serious well funded charity organisation supported by UN and some state government

I have not come across any social worker in Nigeria but that doesn't mean they are not there. They are just rare.

No social workers in Nigeria, most of the work they do are handled by NGO's. That sort os system is not in place, does not mean it wont be in future. Just shows you how far of the mark we are in that country.

I know someone who worked with Lagos State University Hospital Ikeja (The popular Ayinke) as social worker. Her salary was very poor, less than N50K per month but she has relocated to the UK due to the poor salary.

Social work in Nigeria?

Havent heard of that before and it definitely does not exist.
A full fledged Social work structure exists only in 1st world countries.

Others are charity based and dont function permanently anywhere in africa.

Re: What Is The Salary For Social Workers In Nigeria. Please Advice by marabout(m): 1:27pm On Sep 14, 2010
My dear Zionsown,

Social work only practically exists in places where the government (especial local council, municipality, etc) actually cares about the poor, orphans, abused and disenfranchised people!! Does Naija fit this picture for you??
Social work exists in theory in NAIJA  but only really happens in some hospitals where an attached social worker may have to look after babies abandoned in hospitals when family cannot pay bill.
If you are ready to take abaNdoned babies home every night, use your money to buy pampers and feed them also, then social work is the right job for you in "Naija we hail Thee". grin grin grin grin
Your best bet is to keep playing lottery, win a lot of money and go to Naija and set up an NGO.

On a more serious note, try to lobby your state government to provide social services, by so doing you might start a social revolution that other states might want to emulate.
But don't just relocate until you have secured something decent with a reputable international NGO.
Alternatively, top up your degree with a managerial postgrad qualification or something else if you can  to open more doors for you.

Bonna Fortuna.

I just had to laugh.

At poster, as others have said, you would have to join an NGO or Charity.
You could also set up something for yourself.

it is a shame if all said is true. i cant believe it. all i think of is the likes of children in adject poverty and those being abused and no one thereto protect them and social workers in the uk are policy makers they join in the decision making process as to how human in every level is being cared for. i was also wondering if we have children unit in our police stations? more contributions please.

We all know that Nigeria does not have a functioning social system that is why we need people to be innovative enough to start something. Two words research and lobby, because it is not readily available doesn't mean you cannot start something.

Also you seem to be more interested in money, just saying if u were more interested in the state of social care that would ve been better. So i don't think u care much really.

Best of luck.

Haba ppl, there are still few functioning welfare workers/offices in 9ja.
@Topic,There are still very few social/welfare offices functioning in 9ja.I remember the one at borokiri PH very well.It was still functioning as at 3 years ago,i have been a witness and  seen  them reconcile teen mothers with their parents, single parents esp women and juvenile kids.
Things might have gotten bad but if u are determined u can make a difference. The Borokiri welfare office then was managed by one godly woman bless her soul and if she can make a difference, why not you?
For a start, you might want to visit Little saints Orphanage Palmgroove,Badagry or Akowonjo and The Alakara Juvenile home.
Its not gonna be fun or so rewarding financially so fasten ur seat belt !

Social Kini? LMAO

OP don't waste your time on a wild goose chase. What you're looking for simply does not exist in Nigeria.

what we have here are usually poorly funded NGOs.

We'll get there sha, Someday!.
Re: What Is The Salary For Social Workers In Nigeria. Please Advice by Ayowumie(m): 5:21pm On Sep 14, 2010
The salary of a social worker depends on the organisation he is working with and other qualification such social worker has. Social work exist in Nigeria but not as a structured discipline and in the Nigeria of today, social work is a discipline that is needed in almost every sector especially if you as a holder of B.A Social Works has some grounding in primary health care. The sky is bound to be your starting point - all things bee equal.

If u therefore intend to come to Nigeria, just make sure you other qualifications like some additional health related qualifications other wise you might not be better than some one with a B.A in Linguistics when it comes to job relevance and relatedness.

i must confess i alot of people here has inspired me greatly i feel like i am just wasting away in a country that is not mine and will never be mine. onye babe the first 2 lines of ur advice was so inspiring and trust me i will never forget that.
i think the fact that it does not exist means that some body has to take the lead for others to follow and i have a strong desire that i can make it happen. we can make it happen. yes we can. ideas please on how to set up an ngo in nigeria. i love you all and i believe that together we can change the way things are run in that great country.
Re: What Is The Salary For Social Workers In Nigeria. Please Advice by marabout(m): 6:31pm On Sep 14, 2010
Zionsown,

Your enthusiasm and optimism regarding Naija is infectious.
Well, Aisha2 is our NGO guru. She will point you in the right direction.

But first visit obodo naij and see things on the ground and see the area you want to make an impact in (victims of police brutality, amputee bike riders, victims of boko haram, abandoned kids, child witches, seriously ill children, domestic abuse victims) in fact so numerous that you won't know where to start.

Just pick one or two et voila!

We have children's unit inside panti, adeniji adele, zone 2 and ikeja where children b/w 10-12 years old were detained ranging from 2 to 5 years for stealing sweets, selling on the streets, walking late to their houses etc. It's not a joke. Come back and make a trip to Ikoyi prison ,you will cry for this country. The main armed pen and pencil robbers are out there with siren .Am trying to paint a picture of where you want to practice as a social worker.

if he or she is more interested in the money I doubt he/she will even be thinking of Nigeria.
After spending perhaps £12k-30K obtaining a degree i wonder where the energy to lobby some deaf politicians will come from

there are social workers in most public hospitals (secondary$ tertiary), of course they get paid like any other civil servants. There are also social workers in public health department most local governments, these are also civil servants. and there are people working in NGOs, CSO, INGOs. Depending on the organization they work for some earn as good as those who work in bank and oil and gas.

@zionsown

I didnt mean to offend you, i only made the comment based on how your post came across to me. I am one of those believers in finding passion before doing anything as i think it allows for better judgement and commitment so I would not work anywhere I am not passionate about. It would be great if u find a way to make ur plans work but it would be even better if you do it with the passion.

Also you dont have to start an NGO to go into the provision of social services, u could consider setting up as a business by researching the area and building a portfolio of solutions then marketing it to governments and the public.
smiley
It could be difficult but you might find that it would be worth if you are really passionate.

@Dis Guy
I am sure that if she/he is looking for a way to utilise their expertise to achieve their full potential in Nigeria, then the energy might come from that desire.
