The police in Anambra State have arraigned former deputy speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr Keluo Molokwu, for allegedly circulating defamatory text messages against the current Speaker of the Assembly, Chief Anayo Nebe.

Molokwu was dragged before an Awka magistrate court on a five-count charge bordering on defamation of character.

Molokwu, who is eyeing the Awka North/Awka South federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives, "knowingly published and circulated false statement, rumour and report with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public which amounted to committing an offence punishable under section 495(a) of the criminal code Cap 36 Vol II Revised Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 1991, as amended," the charge read.

Molokwu was also alleged to have "conspired with certain people still at large to circulate defamatory publications via text messages to the people of Awka North/Awka South Local Government areas against the person of Anayo Nebe, thereby bringing him to hatred, contempt and ridicule likely to damage him in his profession and trade by injuring his reputation."
