2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu

There appears to be  palpable tension in Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as both General Muhammadu Buhari and former chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, are set to contest the presidential ticket of the party, ahead of 2011 poll.

Malam Ribadu had last Friday in Abuja declared his presidential ambition, while addressing newsmen and followed it early this week with the announcement that he was going to contest on the party’s platform.

In a swift move, however, General Buhari’s party, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) re-opened merger talks with ACN last Thursday in Lagos, in its bid to realise the General’s presidential ambition in 2011.

The CPC team was led by the party’s deputy chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT), Alhaji Sule Hamman while ACN National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, led the party’s team.

The meeting came days before next Monday’s deadline which General Buhari’s party had requested to be allowed to consult with stakeholders, following earlier talks between ACN and CPC teams, which ended in a deadlock

Saturday Tribune learnt that the ACN, which has all along been seeking a northern candidate as its presidential standard bearer and had focused Buhari, appears to be in dilemma on how to handle the situation, following the declaration of Ribadu to contest on the party’s platform.

According to findings, Ribadu’s declaration is said to have excited not a few leaders and chieftains of the party, just as the renewed alliance talks between ACN and Buhari’s CPC have done also to a number of party chieftains.

However, another source stated that the dilemma confronting the party now is be how to resolve the riddle of who should secure the party’s ticket if the alliance between ACN and CPC sails through finaly.

It is learnt that the duo are said to be enjoying a lot of followership in the ACN while the party would need a lot of wisdom to handle the situation in other to avoid a backlash, since it would have to vote for just one of them as its standard bearer at the forthcoming national convention.

Saturday Tribune learnt that part of the reasons the ACN is seeking a merger or alliance with Buhari’s CPC has to do with mutual benefits derivable for the two parties.

It is expected that if the two parties pool resources together, they would register their presence in the North, where Buhari’s popularity is said to  be increasing on daily basis and also South-West, where the ACN is on ground in some states, including Lagos and Edo.

It was gathered that earlier talks between the ACN and CPC reached a deadlock, following alleged insistence of General Buhari’s camp that it be allowed to produce the ACN national chairman and field a number of governorship candidates, among others if his party, CPC were to merge with ACN.

Further consultation between the ACN and CPC has been slated for early October.

Real Tenssion: I want to see how ACN weathers this storm.

Buhari and Ribadu are the real threats to PDP now. will be good if they can combine their resources though.

I am going to support Ribadu first.
Re: 2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu by Nobody: 9:24pm On Sep 25, 2010
The best way for ACN to ensure its electoral defeat even before election kicks off is to choose Buhari as its flag bearer.
Re: 2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu by Pukkah: 9:37pm On Sep 25, 2010
This is good. Either of the candidates is good for me but Ribadu is my first option. All the progressive elements should join forces to combat this non-performing behemoth called PDP.

I pray ACN picks Buhari, that would be a piece of cake for us to handle grin

Buhari will be more accepted to all than Ribadu. If ACN is really serious of challenging PDP in the next presidential election, let them present Buhari as the party flagbearer. He's the messiah Nigeria is waiting for.Corruption is over with Buhari as President of this great nation.

Maybe Ribadu should pitch his tent with labour of Soyinka's DFPF.

As for Buhari, he has a lot of corruption to his name and will be a good bedmate for Bola Tinubu who is the Lagos version of Ibori (only he is much worse).

Apparently, Gen. Buhari (rtd) is coming to terms with the way politics is run in Nigeria. Even if you believe you are a saint, when it comes to Nigeria,

you have to be realistic. ANPP wasn't cutting it for him (and neither were his 'good records') and his newly-formed party hasn't much foothold either

so a merger is, to say the least, apt.

My major concern, however, is that Buhari might want to run for pole position should this merger materialise and I'm personally not keen on seeing the

oldies in Aso rock any longer.

I suggest he uses his fan base to thrust a likely Ribadu/Fashola combo to give PDP a good run for their money.

We need more mergers - Prof. Utomi should be thinking fast about towing this line. No time and  No to PDP!
Re: 2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu by Nobody: 8:35pm On Sep 26, 2010
This is serious dilemma for us. Buhari is most popular grass roots political personality in the north, but not acceptable in teh South. Ribadu has SW at least but not accepted in North. Anyway, in days ahead we will work things out.
Re: 2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu by Becomrich0: 8:43pm On Sep 26, 2010
nuhu ribadu would not do well in the south west , my friend. He has too many enermy. forget nuhu. he cant win. ACN must wait and see who the PDP pick first before they do anything. Let them wait.
Re: 2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu by semid4lyfe(m): 10:09pm On Sep 26, 2010
I'm not losing sleep over this. GEJ will defeat both candidates hands down.

Vote for change! Vote Goodluck Jonathan in 2011.
Re: 2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu by olafolarin(m): 11:25pm On Sep 26, 2010
Thats a great combo to unseat PDP eventually from Nigeria politics and polity.
Buhari will be a better choice to fly ACN#s banners because of his popularity and wider reach.
Re: 2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu by Becomrich0: 12:43am On Sep 27, 2010
the issue is, the ACN or labour party has to wait for the PDP to pick thier presidential candidate, they should not offer anyone that position yet. They can be talking to anyone, even Obama, but wait till the PDP pick the person and also know who the PDP pick as vice president first before the decision is made. If PDP pick Jonathan, plan changes. If the PDP pick IBB. plan changes. Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, and Plan D.
Re: 2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu by DrKitaun(m): 1:05am On Sep 27, 2010
This debate as at yet is not necessary.

ACN's very soul is Tinubu himself, if perchance he insists on Agbaje then BRF and core AC (prior to name change) would leave enmasse, we would ensure tyranny comes to an end in Lagos, talks of ACN presidential candidate is so premature!
