Write an explanation of what the word 'Biafra' means and why it was used once by the Eastern region when it tried to secede [and also the Bight of Biafra]. What language does it come from and what significance does it have to eastern Nigeria?

I dont like the name Biafra. It is some portuguese/spanish name. I believe when we have our own country it should have an Eastern Nigeria name, preferably a name with combined tribal words.

that's quite possible even though the trail is more or less cold.

but since it's said the name was first suggested by an Ijaw man, maybe someone from the inner circle back then can shed more light on the issue.

A guy name Frank Opugo, an ijaw, came up with the name. Biafra was gotten from the name of the coast at the time which the "Bight of Biafra". The name was later change to "Bight of Bonny" after the war.

Unfortunately there is no real information on him but yes he is an Ijaw.At the time ijaws were way more for the secession from nigeria than the ogonis.The ogonis are just now really wanting it because of their environmental exploitation and damage which led to many of them now in the MASSOB. Also, the name "Opugo" which is stated by many articles is incorrect it is "Opigo".

How?. Am sure you will not answer this question. You are also needed in another thread to explain how Ijaw got a population of 14 million, from a silly post of yours.

^^^^ where is ISINWEKE I hear my folks mention it all the time.

Biafra to me is a land flowing with milk and honey where there is no crime and suffering, a land where Nigerians are required to have a visa to enter.

@ Ezeagu & Tpiah

BIAFRA
BI = Bisection
AFRA = Africa
So. Biafra means equaliterally dividing Africa.
Which implied the middle of Africa Or the
heart of Africa.
This is an English word. Though i am not quite sure,
i am incline to believe this word was coined by the
western navigators or explorers because this word
equally means the EQUATOR. Which is the natural
equallateral bisector of Africa. So this word must have
been used by sailors to indicate the Equatorial latitude
or regions of Africa.

hmm, well, you might be onto something there.

i'll look into it and see if i can find anything.

i'm more inclined to the arabic/spanish/portuguese slant because of the word's history and also the "afar" part.

your explanation makes sense if the english is considered from a latin angle.

@ezeagu,

Bros., there is no particular book about this.
This is mathematical reasoning. General knowledge
coupled with mathematical precisions.

I have also always thought what Biafra could possibly mean.

its evident from all your posts that the meaning is not clear tongue tongue
Re: What does the word 'Biafra' mean? by Maxecloe: 7:50am On Oct 10, 2010
I can almost assure you that the word Biafra has no literal meaning period. A name could be based on the diction, syntax, sound or general appeal .

Which mbammiri ethnic says "Fra"?
Re: What does the word 'Biafra' mean? by tpiah: 1:49am On Oct 12, 2010

true.

i think some sections of ijaw (or select ijaws) probably hold the key to the actual meaning.

perhaps.

the first mentioned original biafrans were located around guinea or guinea bissau.

afterwards, a biafran kingdom was situated in the cameroon region.

when and how did a migration occur?

if there wasnt, then that means it's a name representing something and which could be placed anywhere.

giving further credence to the foreign connections/origin theory.

i'd still go with an araboid or latinoid link.

"Bia" means "come".
"Fra" is short for fraternity ( brotherhood).

Biafra is a brotherhood of all the tribes that say "Bia" for "come"
