A Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year-old hairdresser, Miss Mary Eze for fraud without an option of fine.

Justice Joseph Oyewole had found the accused guilty of conspiring with two others to defraud Miss Ogonna Ebubedike, between May and July 2005.

The judge also found her guilty on eight counts out of the 15-count charge levelled against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

He, therefore, sentenced Eze to five years on count one and 10 years each on counts 3, 5,7,9,11,13 and 15 respectively.

However, the sentences are to run concurrently and will begin from 2005 when she was first arrested and arraigned for the offence.

The development indicates that out of the 10 years which she will spend in prison, she has already spent five.

In his judgment, Justice Oyewole said, “The accepted testimony of Ebubedike that the defendant acting with one Ikechukwu Ogbu represented to her that they had United States dollars to clean with chemicals, a representation the defendant knew to be false and fraudulently obtained various sums of money from her.”

According to the EFCC, the action is contrary to Section 1 (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, No. 13 of 1995 as amended by Act No.62 of 1999.

Thank God the 75 years is going to run concurrently and she has even spent 5 years of it, if it was to be real 75 years, I would have suggested she buy her desired coffin along smiley

NIGERIA!,  USELESS LEGAL SYSTEM, USELESS NATION

Animals like Lucky Igbinedion looted and defrauded over 5 million citizens of Edo state of billions of naira when he was governor. What he got from efcc and our useless legal system was just a fine of 3.5million which we heard was even paid by one of his junior drivers.

How much has this woman possibly "conspired" to defraud this Miss Ogonna Ebubedike to warrant 10 yrs in prison without an option of fine?

10 years for each count? What kinda of fraud did she commit? Please let her layers appeal he judges decision. This is an activist judge, and his decision does reflect his view on conspiracy and fraud.

Do people still fall for this shit? this format is stale. anyone who falls for this in 2005 will probably die as a mugu. secondly, the guy that was defrauded too should spend some time in jail for " attempted forgery"

The only fierce judge Nigeria has ever produced is being thrashed on Nairaland. You cannot compare crimes and it depends on how many charges the prosecutors brought against her. Also remember that Bode has money and can afford a good attorney who can pull strings and reduce his punishment. That is the legal system for you and I am sure that if the judge had his way, Bode would have gotten 300 years.

grin grin grin grin grin grin Do you mean our Golden Governor who govern the state that laid the golden egg should serve 3,000 years when plea bargaining is the order of the day? You better wake up.

See, what is worth doing is worth doing well. If you want to steal, steal millions and billions, if possible, steal Nigeria's budget and you will not get more than 3 years.
