In what looked like a replay of Monday’s event in which prominent Igbo leaders were barred from holding a scheduled meeting at the Concorde Hotel, Owerri, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Abuja was on Wednesday prevented from using a public park in Abuja to mark its annual Igbo Day.

Ohanaeze said it was told it would not be allowed to use the Peace Park adjoining the International Conference Centre just hours before the event was billed to kick, despite that it had paid for the venue three weeks earlier.

The Public Relations Officer of the Igbo Delegates Assembly (IDA), and past deputy president of Ohanaeze in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Austine Ifedinezi, told Daily Sun that the organizers were told to look elsewhere because First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, was coming to the conference centre to distribute rice to Nigerians.

Ifedineze said all entreaties to the operators of the park fell on deaf ears as they insisted that the event would not take place there while the First Lady’s function was on. He said the idea was to destabilize Ohanaeze.
He wondered why the park operators never cared to inform Ohanaeze of the development until its members had gone to the place ahead of the event and accused them of acting in bad faith.

However, he noted that September 29 was sacrosanct to the Igbo hence it was either the event was marked that day or not at all. According to him, the organizers of the event had to hurriedly look for an alternative arrangement for the event.

If true, then this regime is indeed all out for "Operation Totality".I think the presidency has seen the handwriting on the wall that it can not win the Igbos over in this election. So the next line of action is frustration and intimidation.

GEJ NO DEY THE COUNTRY? grin grin grin

damn!

nothing in nigerian politics isn't complexed and nothing is what it seems.

my theory is this is the work of someone that's against jonathan trying to nudge the igbo vote away from him.
GEJ knows its campaign time, this type of move is unrealistic and looks like the work of very smart masterful opponents

The thing is. Do you think he did not know that the Igbo Day event was going to be held that day and in that spot?
Re: Ohanaeze Denied Use Of Venue In Abuja by MaziUche0(m): 6:45am On Oct 01, 2010
This is going to anger the Ndi Igbo. Is there a problem with having an Igbo Day?
Re: Ohanaeze Denied Use Of Venue In Abuja by Onlytruth(m): 6:47am On Oct 01, 2010
There is something fishy about this story. It is too simplistic for me to believe, unless there are more things going on than meets the eye.

You missed the issue again!
Did you say you are a student? How do you pass your exams?

The issue is about someone using a product or a service for which he/she has paid for three weeks ago.
It has nothing to do with "tribe day".

I find something fishy with the story as well(at least im hoping its not true). This is alleged to have happen wednesday and we havent heard about it anywhere but today and from only one newspaper.will do more research. If its true and GEJ doesnt come out and speak then we can all welcome IBB as our new president.

it may have to do with the fact that independence celebrations are in full swing and the govt is nervous about any large unsupervised gatherings

our federal govt wants to truncate any possible avenues for embarrassment

Why can't they hold their celebration in Nnewi cuz I see no reason why an ibo celebration which ought to take place in iboland will be shifted to Abuja at exactly a time Nigeria is celebrating her independent.btw, what are they celebrating sef ?

Patience Jonathan locks out another Igbo group
Friday, 01 October 2010 04:45 Abbas Jimoh

Less than a week after the lock out of the Igbo Political Forum in Owerri, Imo State on Monday, the annual world Igbo Day celebration organized by the FCT chapter of the Ohaneze Ndigbo was also forced to vacate the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja by First Lady, Patience Jonathan.

The first lady used the centre for her food outreach programme on the 50th independence anniversary celebration.

Media Adviser of the FCT chapter of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Mr. Ben Bright Mkpuma, told Daily Trust last night on phone that the association had paid for the venue (Peace Haven) and even had assurances from the management of the centre that the venue will be available for their programme.

He said, “We have to move to the Old Parade Ground for the celebration of annual worldwide Igbo day celebration, it was being celebrated at the same time in Canada, United Kingdom and United States among other.

“Secretary of the association, Barrister Arau, had paid for the venue months back and we were even assured last night (yesterday) that we will have the venue for out programme only for the security operatives and management of the ICC to force us to relocate to Old Parade ground,” Mkpuma said.

The National Secretary of the National Conscience Party (NCP) Dr. Yunusa Tanko condemned the event, describing it as a campaign in disguise and a show of shame.

He said by “promoting campaign of rice and maggi. This shows that the country is in a poor state with hungry people. And rather than for the president to create job, his wife was distributing food.”
