Customs Distributes 8,000 Bags Of Rice To Idps, Orphanages In C/river-official by Gistok7: 9:51pm On Jun 13, 2019
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Thursday said it distributed about 8,000 bags of rice to orphanages and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Calabar, Cross River recently.   The Public Relations Officer of the service, Mr Joseph Attah disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Thursday.

Attah said apart from bags of rice, used clothing and vegetable oil were also distributed to the beneficiaries.   According to him, the gesture is a directive from the Federal Government to distribute seized items to IDPs and orphanages.

“We started from the North-East, we distributed similar items in Zone A, that is South-West, we did the same thing in the North-West and some parts of North-Central, which is Zone B.

“We are currently in Zone C comprises of South -South and South-East states of the country,” he said.   Attah said that Imo and Enugu states would be the next to receive such items for IDPs and orphanages, while the committee would round up the distribution in the zone at Port-Harcourt.   He explained that for any orphanage to benefit in the disbursement it must produce a certificate of registration by Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Nice one, rather than the seized goods which are of no health hazard get incinerated.

Good. But customs should find a way of imposing fines. Not always outright seizures

I think it is safer to keep away from importing banned products because it becomes the prerogative of the government to deal with seized goods as it deems fit.

My exacts thoughts too.

Customs should a way of encpuraging people to bring in good from various means and collect duties. It mustn't be from the seaport or airport. The reason smugglers use other means especially countries we share borders with is because of the high cost of duties on items.

E.g. buy a car NGN350,000, buy duties over NGN350,000. Say wetin happen nah? angry cheesy grin

Those goods banned, are we producing enough? They need to do two things that are essential before banning:

1. Step up incentives and encourage people to produce the goods that are currently imported
2. Relax the duties

Nigeria is a consumer nation, producing so little but it is a gamble smuggling goods in. Once "your people" are at the border, you are good to go.

We all know that it is FUTURE IMPOSSIBLE for the NIGERIAN CUSTOM to purchase 8000 BAGS of RICE as Relief Support for some people.

These are PEOPLE’S PROPERTIES (properties of BUSINESSMEN) that were confiscated on the premise of contraband and Poisonous Goods.....

Taking Accolades for people’s hard-work..

Look at their stomachs..... 80,000 have been shared amongst them before they decided to distribute only 8,000.

Nigerian custom stinks of corruption and nothing can remedy that institution.
