[size=14pt]Man arraigned for suffocating two-year-old daughter[/size]

A 65-year-old man, Malam Abba Jamji, has appeared before a Gombe Magistrate's Court for allegedly killing his two-year-old daughter, Hauwa, by suffocating her in a sack.

The prosecution alleged that Jamji, a resident of Malammadu village in the Kwami Local Government Area of Gombe State, put the girl in a sack, tied it and dumped her in a nearby bush on September 12, 2010.

The court heard that Hauwa was the product of an illicit affair between Jamji and his wife's younger sister, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

When the charge of culpable homicide, punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code, was read to the accused, he told the magistrate that he understood the alleged offence.

No plea was taken, but his counsel, Malam M.J. Babadidi, applied for bail.

The Magistrate, Alhaji Haruna Inuwa, however, adjourned the case to October 19 and ordered that the accused be remanded in prison.
