In defense of Emeagwali-In naija its no biggie

Why do we blame Emeagwali for exaggerating his achievements? Is what he did not typical Nigerian?
Do these names and their claims ring any bell?

-Prof Gabriel Oyibo and his almighty GAGUT formula
-IBB- who exagerated his contribution to the civil war
-Prof Uwemedimo and his Comandclem claiming to have discovered a paint product worth billions that Mobil Oil company used and refuses to pay for
-Prof Chike Obi who claimed to have found an elementary proof to Fermat’s Last Theorem.
-Yabatech that once (looks like they have changed it on their website now) claimed to be the third oldest higher institution of learning in the world and first in Africa
-Dr Abalaka who claimed to have found a cure for AIDS
-Another Nigerian (names forgotten) claimed to be able to cure AIDS with orange juice
-Prophet Joshua claims to be able to cure everything
-Thousands of our lawyers, doctors, academicians, politicians, school teachers, civil servants, private sector executives and staff all hold one false certificate or another
-Take a look at this FAKE man who practiced law for many years before he was caught http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art200902223264739
-We still remember the Toronto certificate saga of our former Speaker Salisu Buhari, and Tinubu's legal battle with Fawehinmi on account of a fake Chicago certificate of Tinubu's.
- Even Prof Iwu's certificates were once questioned, as are those of the current Controller General of the Nigerian Customs
- Was Obasanjo not said to hold a Higher National Diploma? Pray, tell, from where did he obtain it?

Pls remove Chike Obi from that list.

In 1997, Obi claimed to have found an elementary proof to Fermat’s Last Theorem. This work was carried out at his Nanna Institute for Scientific Studies in Onitsha, Eastern Nigeria and published in Algebras, Groups and Geometries.[1][2][3] A review of this proof published in Mathematical Reviews claims that Obi's proof is a previously-known false proof.[4][5] Fermat’s Last Theorem had already been solved in 1994 by Andrew Wiles and Richard Taylor.[6]

I can remove his name on the basis that we agree he was outdated if he did not know that what he sought to disprove had already been disproved 3 years earlier. Was he not at that time reading peer-published works in maths or attending mathematical meetings outside Nigeria to get updated?

Do you think every Mathematician can know or even understand all the publications in journals. You think say Mathematics na philosophy wey you go just read like book. A maths Professor could pick up a journal and only understand 2 or 3 articles in there. Chike Obi has obviously solved some Mathematics, submitted it for peer review, and fellow Mathematicians have decided that he used the same method which had been tried 3 years earlier and been disproved. He didn't go beating his chest and making fallacious claims about it so case closed. We are talking about a well respected and pioneer Mathematician in Africa with full Professorship and teaching and research position in one of the best unis in Africa.

Was thinking exactly the same thing.

But he is a maths prof. I do not want to believe that he was not aware that such a theory had been proved/disproved. With what materials did he do his research then if he did not come across materials on the same topic three years after?

This is not to take anything away from Prof Obi's achievements. But Emeagwali should not be killed for doing what others are also doing. Now take a look at this man here http://nigeriavillagesquare.com/forum/main-square/58510-sort-people-nigeria-needs-1-a.html
It is the same trend of trumpet-blowing.
