Please Nairalander, is scoring a penalty luck or not? I was involved in an arguement with my friend that penalty is all about expertise and no element of luck attached.

well, for everything we do there's a margin for luck; but on the real, i don't agree that when it comes down to penalties, its all about luck --- firstly, you've gotta be composed enough to step-up and then you gotta know how to hit that frigging ball!
there are lots of players that don't miss a lot of penalty kicks and thats because they know darn well how to go about it! so it ain't all luck when it comes to penalties!

Penalty is a game of luck cos nearly every footballer has missed penalties at one point or the other. We've seen instances when players who would never miss penalties on a good day would step forward and blast the penalty wide or into the keeper's arms(Beckham at Euro 2004,shevchenko in istanbul 2005,maldini at Euro2000,Rui costa at Euro 2004 etc). The great zidane in a documentary also reavealed that his secret to penalties was that he'd just choose a spot and blast it there without caring whether the penalty would be caught or not. This further goes to show that we cannot talk of a proffessional penalty taker the way we would talk about a proffesional goalscorer.Every player needs some degree of luck to score penalties wink

Explain why the Germans always beat the English at penalty shoot-outs.

Penalty could be regarded as an element of luck

Fernando Hierro never missed a penalty throughout his playing career, what do you have to say about that?
Re: Is Penalty Luck Or Not? by RuuDie(m): 8:55am On May 22, 2007
its not a question of whether players miss or not, its more how many those a player score/miss on the average --- every now & again, a player's going to miss a penalty kick but just like free-kicks, corner-kicks & even throw-ins, some players are just so good @ taking penalty kicks that it is no longer a matter of luck; if they play 10 like 7 or 8 are going to hit the back of the net & its not because they was lucky, its because they just darn well know how to!

. . . and now the question; did chelsea crash out of the champions league because Liverpool was lucky to have scored their penalties?

What is luck?
Penalty is not luck. Its about how well you practise and confidence.
Score 4/5,you are good.

chelsea crashed out because liverpool were better on the penalties.

Just as we've got specialist kickers, we've also got excellent stoppers in the mould of Iker Cassilas.

If you don't know how to play penalty, mother

luck will not play it for you.
Re: Is Penalty Luck Or Not? by wormedup(m): 1:39pm On May 22, 2007
so excellent stoppers supercedes excellent kickers ?

stoppers remind me of Sergio Goycoechea cool
Re: Is Penalty Luck Or Not? by RuuDie(m): 1:53pm On May 22, 2007
nope, but it also counts --- u know its player vs g.keeper!
Re: Is Penalty Luck Or Not? by Nobody: 3:42pm On May 23, 2007
Penalty is Luck simply because Teams hardly practise for it. Example, Chelsea never knew they will play penalty against Liverpool, that was the reason Mourinho made a wrong selection for the shoot-out.
But when We talk about Individual's performances, it is not luck but a good opportunity. I know of series of players that hardly loss the shoot-out.
Lastly, goal-keeper with average height are good, because the tall ones (Cech, Van der sar, Dida, )are usually beaten when the ball is floored

Re: Is Penalty Luck Or Not? by marlet01(m): 4:20pm On May 23, 2007
Penalty is never luck. If you don't practice for it then you'll get to loose all your sopt kicks or probably score just one.

That's why most teams if not all has a particular sopt taker, take a look at Baptista he never scored a penalty this season for Arsenal despite playing three; and also Seedorf who has almost missed all the spot kicks he has taken in his career.

So i strongly believe spot kicks ain't luck is just about practicing well for them that's all.

pealties in most cases ends with the lucky side carrying the day.
if almost all the best players in the world has in one time or the other lost penalty, then what are we talking about.
a team in most cases may be good in a penalty shoot out today and very bad in another as in the same competition- a vivid example of this is ivoiry coast in egypt 2006.
we see players with courage stepping up to play penalties but will end up loosing their chances and if the shootouts continues and become compulsory that every player in the team must play, u see those players running away coming up to decide the games in the favour of their teams.
in holland 2005 mikel was not ready to participate in penalty shootouts against holland, but he was forced to play when the match could not be decided by the first five but he was good.
in penalties, it is all about guts and luck.
we can see nice penalties but over the bar and we can see bad penalties but goals so luck is the key to me.
Re: Is Penalty Luck Or Not? by Matured26(m): 3:22pm On May 25, 2007
Hmnnnnnn,
Penalty is a game of luck. At that stage of the game, it can go to anybody but with a strong goalkeeper in goal for either side, You are sure that the side with the better goalkeeper would win the shoot out because keepers when they catch the ball give their players much confidence.
Re: Is Penalty Luck Or Not? by marlet01(m): 3:57pm On May 25, 2007
Penalty is never luck!

Speaking of the cup of nations in Egypt where Ivory coast had wonderful kicks against cameroun was because they weren't under pressure. If you are under severe pressure in taking a penalty "I bet you are going to loose it"
Penalty is all about practicing well for them, having a good keeper and then a little but of luck not "LUCK"
