I have come to notice that WE Nigerian programmers/web developers(web solution providers in general) are GREEDY often times stingy when it comes to sharing. We tend to want to do everything by ourselves. Here is an example of what i mean:-

A certain firm/individual, approaches a web developer/programmer about a project in mind. After all formalities have been put in place, then the programmer commence work on the project,
Now, say the company wants an e commerce site/an online store and project budget is about N500,000(just exaggerating). Of course the web developer/programmer has a couple of friends who are good with tools like adobe photoshop, fireworks, illustrator etc, another friend good in determining Mock-up for a web site, and another friend who knows a couple of CMS(wordpress, drupal, joomla). Instead of the web-developer/programmer(the original guy who was approached by the firm) to form alliance with his friends who have these skills, split the task amongst each other and deliver a good clean and high standard web app with appealing GUI,
they rather keep all the money to themselves, apply the little they know in design,cms and Mock-up AND Guess what the end result would turn out to be ,
A CRAPPY DESIGN!!!

What i am saying in essence is, money is not everything, think about the quality of service and time of delivery.know a little of everything, and specialize in 1 thing, but when professional service calls, LET THE SPECIALIST DO THEIR JOB.

There is a saying that "PEOPLE DON'T CARE IF YOU CAN BUILD A MANSION FOR A WEBSITE, BUT CAN YOU DELIVER IN TIME"

Have a great day guys.

I support OP and can state that I believe in partnership to the fullest and in deed put my writing into practice. My only beef with OP? Why make a blanket statement? Can OP honestly state that this is true of every single Nigerian developer? Or is it based on 1 or 2 experiences OP has had?

Secondly, how many developers charge enough to be able to afford sharing/partnering? I mean, if I were to use NL (general statement alert) to judge the Nigerian web dev environment, the average price for a website hovers around N25K. At that rate, I personally would rather do it all myself, and this wouldn't be called greed but common sense.

Collab in Nigeria is crap!

On what grounds, Mr. Moderator? tongue

@OP

Its typical human nature. Quality granted, if I can do it all, I chop alone. Sadly, like Yawatide has guessed, I did guess along the (average) price moving around is 25k. I've even seen someone do a promo for branding facebook pages for the same amount!!!

For large projects, what is on paper is never the case. Chances are the peeps awarding the project have their "cut" inside that as well. One might have to pursue numerous "departments" with "moolah" to push your cheque out.

And lastly, the type of clients that know true quality (how you define this is also debatable) are so few and too far apart for most developers/designers to care. do now, chop, clean mouth, go.

As for collabs, they are there, albeit it a few, but pie has to be big enough for both parties

@ yawatide, i wouldn't know if its true of every Nigerian developer cos i haven met or seen em all, but 90 out of 30% i have met seems to be working alone(freelance) and would seem interested when you talk to them about collaboration,(they are probably dont want you to know their contacts and amongst a whole lot of other reasons). and YES! i am basing this fact on personal experiences.
About the price(25k), these days, i dont really think web developers charge that low anymore (except for upcoming developers). These days the more experienced guys charge like "from 70-80k upwards", some even set a standard for themselves(their standard price that they would never fall below).

In general, i think what matters most in partnership is agreement, trust and understanding. Trust me, if you give quality job, you will never end up with 25k on any project, except you dont know the worth of your skills.

@ omnipotence, YES! but not totally true. Like i said earlier, agreeing to terms and condition/finding the right partner is wat matters.

@WebMonk, you are right some how.

@dhtml, say what!

please pardon my typos.

Line 1: 90 out of 100%

Line 2: wouldn't

line 3:- (they probably don't want you to know their contacts, amongst other reasons)

If you had said that from the start, I probably wouldn't have even responded. I just happen to have this thing about blanket statements. It's like saying that all Nigerians are 419s. You and I know that if you heard that from someone, you wouldn't exactly be pleased cool

toodles

This is just one of the factor that I think we Nigerian web, anything have to look into. I will like to us not to look at this thread with reference to the caption. I'd prefer if it is viewed from the point of "Problems facing collaboration among concepts".

I have personally faced this lately and it has not gone well with me. Most times, greed is the main object of disruption. Mr. A brainstorms an idea and builds a project around it, proposes to a client and gets mobilization. He connects to Mr. B and probably Mr. C based on their specialization. The problem faced is that Mr. B or Mr. C or Mr. B and C will want to instead of just doing their outsourced jobs and getting paid will want to have the 100% project plan. If you give them out, sorry, you are a looser and if you fail, they back out or charge you higher than you will want to pay, all in a bid to frustrate you.

People differ anyway but most are just not worth it. Some are even mediocre. They waste your time and finally end up doing the opposite of what you projected. I just for now will say, WE ARE NO WAY NEAR GOOD COLLABORATION HERE IN NIGERIA. We still need to learn more and more.

I no get time to type jare,

@ Ominipotence, TRUE TALK!!!

@ yawatide, even though i had a personal experience about this, thats not exactly my reason for this thread. What am trying to point out is that COLLABORATION BRINGS ABOUT GOOD AND QUALITY RESULT(work).
Ever watched the video posted by GOOGLE on youTube? "myth of the genius programmer"(search for it on you tube), it talks about this same thing. The best websites, softwares today was not written by 1 programmer, its as a result of at least two heads collaborating, (handling different modules). Am just saying that if we collaborate/affiliate more, we will bring about great results. Trust me, i have seen some sites done by some Nigerians and its really not too appealing, not that they are not good or they cant do it, but its as a result of "i wanna do it all alone", GET MY GIST?

And about your blanket statement issue, i will put it to you this way(please dont take this as insult, cos its not):- SAY YOU ARE A PUBLIC FIGURE, and something happened, and rumour starts spreading around saying "yawatide is a thief",and it soo strong that everybody have that impression about you,TRUST ME, YOU DONT WANT TO SIT AROUND AND DO NOTHING ABOUT IT!, THE LEAST YOU WANNA DO IS COME OUT AND SAY YOU ARE NOT, thats not gonna hurt, is it So match it with this post and your last comment, and see if it makes sense to you.

No offence taken.

Again, just because I am being accused of theft doesn't mean that even if convicted, you are to equate all females or all yoruba females as thieves. My point: take people on an individual basis and gather your facts/stats based on your personal experiences and not a general assumption, that can't be backed by facts/stats.
