Gbajabiamila: Nigeria’s Tertiary Institutions Lack Capacity To Solve Problems by Omooba77: 7:14am On Dec 20, 2019
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Thursday said tertiary education system in the country “is severely and dangerously lacking in capabilities needed to build a nation.”

He said a decline in the quality of scholarship and academic output and of the graduates coming out of tertiary institutions were the clearest confirmation that Nigerian tertiary institutions lacked the capacity to build a nation that would survive through the current moment of change and turbulence.

Gbajabiamila spoke in Osogbo, Osun State, while delivering the 1st Tunde Ponnle Annual Lecture titled, ‘Building a Tertiary Truly 21st Century University: Task Beyond Government,’ held on the main campus of the Osun State University.

Suggesting solutions to the problems, Gbajabiamila said issues of curriculum and teaching methods, as well as fair assessment, should be part of any reform considerations.

He called for a review of curricula and teaching methods with a view to situating Nigerian practices in the context of global labour needs.

Gbajabiamila said, “Collaborations between our higher institutions and the organised private sector is vital to carry out the essential work of engagement, research and review that is required at this time to bridge the gaps in our knowledge.

“We need to do this as a necessary precursor to focusing national attention on these issues so that we can jointly rise to the demands of the moment. This is an objective that we cannot, for the sake of our future, leave to government.”

Not far from truth as most of those appointed to manage the school are busy using their pesciouse time to sleep with girls boasting how untouchable they're.

Just as your kind have bastardized our educational system, politicized everything that has to do with education.

Favour your unqualified cronies and their wards with lecturing jobs in our universities.

Unqualified lecturers who do not know the value of research project and how to assess students on it because politicians favoured them with lecturing jobs.

See this one ohhh, so it's now they realised that schools or education in Nigeria na scam...

No centre research for professional courses and science courses, how can you solve problems then, students projects are in shelves rotting away because they don't believe in what they do...

That itself could be the solution to many of our problems but they don't trust the students, because they know what they're dishing out to us, so they don't believe students works are genuine. What's now the essence of allowing students go through the pain of making research to solve problems or to find solutions and just dump them somewhere cos they believe it can't be genuine. Nigeria educational system is pathetic...

It is well...

Not true.

Why not call an education summit and push for laws to revamp the educational sector. Nigeria is blessed with orators but if the number of those with oratory skills match those with doable skills, our education would be improved.

Gbaja, you and your colleagues jack up the budget for the National Assembly and recurrent expenditure. Why don't you always jack up education budget by 300%? In the US and UK, education receives the third highest allocation. But in Nigeria, your salaries are embarrassing.

Any wonder they don't want to legislate on how to make it better but instead choose to send their children abroad to school? Our leaders have taken us for granted for too long.

I thought that is more or less what politicians also do and get paid multiple times what the teachers earn while doing absolutely nothing.

We know.

Too many "cram and vomit" graduates parading certificates worth as much as the paper it is printed on.

No experience. No corporations in Nigeria to absorb them for real life applications.

But they are the first to remind you that they are graduates and come online to debate with the oracle.
