Joy as Enugu receives 30 luxury buses from Innoson

KEEPING alive its avowed determination to partner with indigenous auto manufacturers in its programme of modernizing intra-city commuting, Enugu State Government has taken delivery of 30 brand new luxury buses from the indigenous auto giant, Innoson Automobiles Nigeria Limited.

Disclosing this to The Guardian, Commissioner for Enugu Capital Territory, John Egbo, noted with glee that Innoson has justified the confidence reposed in it by Governor Sullivan Chime, pointing out that having taken delivery of the buses, arrangements have been concluded with the authorities of Rokana Nigeria Limited to brand the buses in Coal City Shuttle colours.

Egbo, who doubles as the Commissioner for Transport, stressed that the Sullivan Chime administration is well focused on its urban renewal programme adding that the government was not happy to see residents of the state commuting in less than conducive circumstances since according to him transportation represents a key segment of the modernization of the Coal City.

"The Sullivan Chime-administration insists that Coal City must rank among the modern cities of the world; the Governor is not happy to hear people say that Enugu is reclaiming its old glory. His Excellency believes that the Coal City is being transformed to match any other modern city in the world. And transport, a civilized means of intra-city commuting is a major part of this transformation. That is why 600 brand new taxis were injected into Sullivan's Coal City Cab scheme," he explained.

Egbo noted that the addition of the 30 new buses brings to 50 the number of such luxurious intra-city buses, saying that the vision of the government is to make public transport safe, affordable, convenient and popular so as to reduce congestions and the rush to own second hand cars that trouble the environment with their high carbon emissions.

The commissioner praised the management of Innoson for its timely delivery of the 30 air-conditioned luxury buses, which he said were coming at a time passenger traffic in the city was on the increase. He observed that it was incredible that a Nigerian firm could keep to terms of contract.

In his reaction, the Special Adviser to Governor Sullivan on Transportation Matters, Emeka Mammah, declared that the people of Enugu State have nothing to complain of again in the area of mass transportation, saying that the policy of the state government was to ensure healthy commuting within the city to take care of the influx of visitors to Enugu.

Mammah, who is a scion of the transport mogul, Ifesinachi, added that the decision of the state government to increase the fleet of Coal City shuttle buses was informed by the demand of women and school children for more luxury buses that would enhance personal safety and comfort.

The buses are to be unveiled at a brief ceremony by Governor Chime at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu.
