We’re dying: Ex-Biafran soldiers cry
By PETRUS OBI, Enugu
Monday, May 11, 2009

The Nigerian Civil war may have ended several years ago on ‘no victor’ ‘no vanquished note,’ but the victims of the war, especially the disabled ex- Biafran soldiers who have been ‘abandoned’ at their settlement camp in Oji-River, Enugu State are still feeling the pains of neglect and abandonment by both the federal government and the defunct Biafran Republic.

From the narrow entrance to the dilapidated camp, one could understand what Mr. Joseph Akani, spokesperson for the ex-soldiers meant when he said that “When we were brought here we were told that we would stay here, decay and die.”

The visit of the de-mining team from the Federal Ministry of Defense to the camp recently provided the disabled soldiers an opportunity to speak out; and they seized it indicting both the federal government, the eleven States of the old Eastern Central States.

They also indicted the former Biafran Leader, Chief Odumegwu Emeka Ojukwu of abandoning them claiming that the former commander of the Biafran army had never visited them since they arrived the camp in 1970.

Said he; “Today our sun has risen; for the first time since 1970 when the war ended we are seeing members of the Nigeria Defence in a great number like this. Happily enough you have seen us you have seen where we are quartered; by our right is the leprosy colony, in our front is the Oji River General Hospital; it mainly treats the leprosy patients.

As you can see, there is no government catering for us; we only live on charity. As you come here today, we and members of our family are rejoicing that at least, they’ll have something to eat. You represent the federal government and we know through you our message will get to the president.

We need to be rehabilitated. If not that we are war victims, being members of the Nigeria family I think we deserve life. Our children deserve to be educated, our wives deserve to be clothed and have something doing, since they are our helpers; our eyes and our legs. We are pleading that you take our message to the federal government; we are begging that they should come and alleviate our sufferings.

“It’s almost 40 years since the war ended and our existence has been is by the mercy of God. Here there is no water, our accommodation; if you enter there you will pity us. I have seen that those who are asked to die don’t die so quick. When we were brought here we were told that we will stay here, decay and die.

Thirty nine years have come and gone but some of us are still alive. When we came here we were 697 today how many are left; less than 100. I am not happy to say that we are leaving because those who are dead, we are not better than them. Many of us died out of frustration; many died out of simply illness that could have been treated; and those of us living today, we are struggling with one illness or the other; there is one of us bedridden, sores here and there; nobody caters for him, except that the almighty God will never abandon his people.

Leader of the federal government team and the director of Administration Commodore Essien Epkiken (rtd) disclosed that they have been sent to go round the eleven states that were involved in the war and to remove unexploded land mines and the ascertain the number of victims.
As a token of goodwill we are here some gifts for you and your families. We are very happy to be here and we have seen you in person and your families and we seriously appreciate what kind of life you have been going through and it is our responsibility to enlighten all the people around us including the federal government of your plight.
He urged the ex-soldiers to assist the team in identifying the areas where mines were laid during the war to make their work easy and to ensure the safety of the people.

Ojukwu should be paying their salaries abi?
Meanwhile Awo committed suicide after starving them to death

How Awo committed suicide
Twenty –three years after he suddenly was reported dead of natural cause and two years shy of his golden jubilee , facts are now emerging on the reasons that led to First and Second Republic political heavyweight ,Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo committing suicide
It was learned that he did it to stem the tide of a possible military court martial into an insurrection he was planning to lead alongside his political associates at the time when it became evident that then Military President ,General Ibrahim Babangida was intending staying in power forever.
In a no-hold barred interview with FS Online recently,a grass root politician ,Mr Adebayo Adeyinka who lives within the College Road at Ifako-Ijaiye axis in Ogba ,a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria was livid with rage when he learned that a key politician connected to the issue was denying the incident.
He revealed that Chief Awolowo wanted to lead some kind of guerilla warfare or militant campaign against the government of President Babangida so that he can be overthrown through a popular or people -led putsch.
According to him , the Elder Statesman summoned a meeting of his core loyalists over the issue and this was even filmed so as to strengthen the extent of commitment of each of the politician that attended the meeting,
He pointed out that however unknown to all of those who were privy to this meeting and clarion call , Chief Lateef Kayode Jakande ,Former Executive Governor of Lagos State had a different plan as he betrayed them to the military .
He Said:’ But unknown to them , Chief Jakande was planning to betray them, he went to President Ibrahim Babangida and promptly showed him the tape
“Papa Awolowo was invited for a meeting with President Ibrahim Babangida who was then staying at Dodan Barracks which was the seat of power as at then and the truth of his clandestine meetings was revealed to him by the gap –toothed General
“He gave Papa some options and that was for him to be ready to face a court martial , be ready to go to a prison or better still go on exile
“At this stage Papa felt instead of allowing some ambitious khaki boy to mess him up he should just pack it in and call it a day ,so Chief Awolowo decide to commit suicide so as to save himself from the ignominy of going to prison for the second time in his lifetime .
“But before he did this he called his core loyalists for a meeting ,before then he had called up Late Chief Bola Ige [Cicero],since the latter had a very strong understanding of the Hausa Language having had his formative years as a young man in Kaduna but discovered that the late Esa-Oke strongman was innocent after he was interrogated by Papa
“He called others for enquiries while asking them to tender the video cassettes of the meeting they all attended to discuss the plans to topple President Babangida for examination ,at this juncture Chief Jakande developed a cold feet as he could not produce his own copy of the video which was freely distributed to all that was present at the meeting previously before the betrayal and that was how the cat was let out of the bag
“So he cursed him at this point and pointed out that he will never have any form of relevance politically as far as Nigeria was concerned and till today members of the Awolowo Dynasty avoids him like a plague.
“I was their when the letter he wrote to the family to beg them for forgiveness over the unfortunate incident was read in the presence of all present ,if he continues to deny I am ready to confront him publicly again on the same issue as I can even remember that elders asked him to go to the grave of the late sage to plead for forgiveness
“When he was questioned he lied that the National Security Organization now State Security Services had visited his house to check on him and in the process took the tape in question but” Awoists” knew that this was a very weak argument as he did not inform their political group of this development before their enquiry on the subject
“That was how Senator Abraham Adesanya assumed the leadership of the Awolowo camp of Yoruba politics after the demise of the man ,he was not even so close to Awolowo during his lifetime like Chief Jakande and that was why many called him Baba Kekere on account of this cosy relationship
“Before he gave up the ghost , he said his prayers and then took the poison which killed him almost immediately but the public was not fully aware as they were given a different account of what happened.
“We were simply told that he died while he was brushing his teeth in his bathroom at his Park Lane,Apapa residence here in Lagos
“He was stupendously wealthy during his lifetime, infact there is know company at Oba Akran in Ikeja ,Lagos where he does not have at least a five percent equity, Dideolu Court in Ogba alone cannot be valued at less than N10 Billion ,that was the place that he had in mind to be his Seat of power if he was elected as Nigeria’s President.
‘He owned Shonibare Estate but the man he was using as a front and who later went to prison over some issues which Awolowo himself was privy to eventually laid claim to the estate.
“He got all of this wealth due to a great measure of goodwill and tax waivers he gave to investors whenever they come to establish their business.
“Anytime you buy a bottle of Coca-Cola you are enriching the Awolowo Dynasty ,go to Ijebu Ikenne and you will discover that the price of a bag cement there is different from other parts of the nation due to the subsidy that the citizens enjoy on account of Awolowo who was their son and I hope you know that West African Portland Cement is in Ewekoro and not Ikenne.
“On account of this great betrayal Awolowo family members regard the “Awoist” as a group people should deal with using a long spoon till this day and this explains why when The Peoples Democratic Party Government gave some of them political appointment lately they accepted it without thinking twice.
“Dr Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu was made an Ambassador by Former President Olusegun Obasanjo while , Mr Segun Awolowo Jnr was given a plum job at the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja as a Secretary.
“Recently when Afenifere was disintegrating Mama out of concern for her husband’s legacies decided to call a truce because as she puts it then, she did not know what she was going to tell her husband the day they meet in heaven
“He made Sijuwade rich , because he was his business associate and in fact some of us held very strong views that he was one of his fronts and later the same man became the Ooni of Ife”he added
Mr Adebayo Adeyinka recalled his several years of following grass root politics right from the days of Action Group to the Unity Party of Nigerian era in the second republic but now lamented that he had since lost all interest in partisan politics due to the massive corruption in our polity.
He listed such blue chips like Dunlop Nigeria Plc ,Guinness Nigeria Plc, Neimeth Pharmaceutical Nigeria Plc ,May and Baker Nigeria Plc ,Vitafoam Nigeria Plc ,Wahum Nigeria Limited ,CAP Nigeria Plc , International Paints of West Africa [IPWA], Berger Paints Nigeria Plc ,Berec Nigeria Limited ,Kabelmetal, Nigeria Bottling Company Plc ,Leventis Nigera Plc ,West African Portland Cement Company,[Lafarge ],Wema Bank Nigeria Plc, Scoa Nigeria Plc ,CFAO Nigeria Plc, Cadbury Nigeria Plc ,Wemaboard Estates, Odu’A Group, Livestock Feeds Nigeria Plc , Nigerian Breweries Plc as places the Awolowo family have commercial interest to mention just a few.
Apart from this stocks analysts believe that the most visible of his investment ,The Nigerian Tribune Newspapers cannot be valued at less than N100billion today in terms of brand evaluation as Thisday Newspapers was valued by the Owner ,.Mr Nduka Obaigbena at N200 Billion recently during a media chart while celebrating his fiftieth birthday sometimes last year.
Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo was a leader who believed that the state should channel Nigeria’s resources into education and state –led infrastructural development.
At his own expense albeit controversially ,he introduced the free primary education for all of the Western Region ,he equally established the first television service in Africa in 1959 and expanded electrification projects in the region using the proceeds from the highly lucrative Cocoa export industry.
The Cocoa House in Ibadan regarded by many as one of the major landmarks of Nigeria’s architectural history was built as a result of his economic blueprint which was targeted towards the emancipation of his people from poverty
He built the first stadium in West Africa , the Liberty Stadium ,Ibadan and he coined the name “Naira “for Nigeria’s official currency ,it was previously called Nigerian Pounds.
During the 1970’s ,he was very critical of Nigeria’s military expenditure insisting that more should be spent on development
He ran a free health care programme for children up till the age of eighteen years .
On his death on the 9th of May,1987 as a mark of respect for his legacies ,The University Of Ile-Ife which ironically he helped to build as Premier of the Old Western Nigeria was re-named in his honour as part of a post humous celebration of his life and times.
His portraits adorn public places in Nigeria especially in his native Yoruba land where he is seen as an icon.
His picture also adorn Nigeria’s one hundred naira note.
He has been described surprisingly by some of his greatest critics and even political opponents as probably the Best President Nigeria never had.
He struck a chord with the womenfolk during his lifetime when in a rare show of public affection for his wife of several years, Chief Mrs Hannah Dideolu Awolowo told the world that the woman was his jewel of inestimable value.
How right or prophetic he was because his wife has continued to strengthen the mileage of the husband’s name even in death.
During an exclusive interview with FS Online at his Ilupeju home in Lagos last year, Chief Lateef Jakande upon being probed with questions over his relationship with Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo on account of what feelers were suggesting had denied that they had a bad relationship shortly before his death.
He insisted that those that said that they had any problems between them prior to Chief Awolowo’s death were not been honest as they were all telling lies.

Residents of Osun State are still at a loss over the events that led to the murder of a 75-year old woman by her son at Oore, a community near Okuku in Odo Otin Local Government area of Osun State.
Haruna Popoola, 45, recently robbed the sleepy town of its serenity when he reportedly slaughtered his mother, Muniratu. He’s currently being remanded at the Ilesa Prisons.

But during a chance encounter with the suspected murderer, he said even he could still not fathom why he decided to slaughter his own mother.

Days after the gruesome murder, the people of the agrarian town are still mourning the demise of a woman who many described as a “true mother”.

When Daily Sun recently called at Oore, gloom and grief pervaded the town. Though many people declined comments, those who spoke with Daily Sun were in utter confusion, wondering how a one-eyed, one-legged man was able to carry out such a despicable act. This reporter learnt that Haruna had been suffering bouts of mental imbalance of late after suffering a series of misfortunes.

A member of the Popoola family at Eesa compound in the town said: “I can’t say if he is normal or not. When he was younger, he travelled to Ilorin in search of greener pastures. We thought he was doing well until he returned to Oore and started farming. He has been battling with some challenges. His problem started many years ago when he went to harvest palm kernels and some particles entered one of his eyes. All efforts to get it out failed. The situation degenerated and he lost the eye.

“Few years after he lost his eye, Haruna went to his farm one day and had a leg injury. The wound festered and the doctor decided to cut the leg to save the man’s life. His mother stood by him in all these travails. But he became depressed and seemed to have lost his passion for hard work. He became unpredictable and uncontrollable. For some times now, he had been selling beer and other liquor at his grandfather’s house. He has been exhibiting some wild behaviour occasionally.”

It was during one of such fits that was reportedly brought to the notice of his mother that fateful evening. The mother of four was living in a storey building built by Haruna’s late father. On the fateful day, some people noticed Aaruna’s strange behaviour and went to inform her. She hurriedly left her Ilie Road residence for Eesa compound.

“She succeeded in calming him down, but some of the people there feared that Haruna might cause more trouble in the night, and so she decided to pass the night with him. Haruna’s wife had divorced him about three years ago after having five children for him. So he lives alone. It was in the morning that it was discovered that he had killed his mother. And this was the same woman that had been taking good care of him for years. She washed his clothes and took care of his children. Haruna is jobless and he is not even useful to himself due to his condition and depression.”

Oloore of Oore, Oba Kareem Oyewole told Daily Sun that some people cried to the palace on discovering the evil deed. “After sending some people to confirm the incident, I invited the police and he was arrested. Only Haruna and God could say what really happened. People should be careful of their utterances. We are praying against such occurrence in this town.”

At the State’s Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Haruna gave an insight in to what really happened before dawn on the fateful day. He was feeble and cut a pitiable picture. One would not believe that he had enough strength in him to snuff life out of even a chicken. In a faint voice, he told our reporter: “That night, I saw a goat in my dream.

I thought the goat was with me on my bed. I didn’t know how the knife got to my hand. I didn’t know how it happened. I was later told that I had killed my mother. How could I have killed my beloved mother who had been taking good care of me and my siblings? I can’t understand this,” he blabbed. The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Solomon Olusegun commended people of the town for alerting the police promptly.

The suspect has since been arraigned at an Osogbo Magistrate Court presided over by Magistrate Abiodun Ajala. According to the Police Prosecutor, Joshua Oladoye, Aaruna was charged with murdering his mother on April 8 at Oore. The magistrate ordered that he be remanded at Ilesa Prison till June 16 when the case would be heard.

Ritual Killer Attempts To Behead Girl, 26 In Anambra

With the emergence of the month of December, which usually heralds the celebration of
Christmas marking the birth of the savior of the world, Jesus Christ, many are known to have mistaken this as a time for stock taking on the achievement of the year, leading to their involving in several acts to ensure that they meet up their obligations by all means possible.

Chief among some of the vices people engage in to make money is ritual killings and armed robbery. This is a time when it is known that especially in the eastern part of Nigeria where the people value the celebration not for what it is, but for the mere fact that it is seen as a period for taking stock, and as such anyone who has not made it big to such times is simply out of trend.

This has lead to the popularization of the phrase ember-months. This usually starts in September, and is like a warning sign that the year is fast coming to an end, and a reminder that one must try to make it. During this period, vices like kidnapping for ransom, ritual murder and armed robbery rise, prices of goods in the market simply skyrocket as the trader tries endlessly to make more money through undue profit.

The above scenario could be said to be responsible for the fate of one Chioma Ezeonyido, a waiter at a restaurant [see restaurant] in Awka, when an okada operator who was to convey her to her home after a hard day’s job turned out to be a ritualist, and attempted to behead her after forcefully driving her into bush along the route they traveled.

This took place in late August of 2010.

Though she was able to survive the attempt, the story is a chilling one as the lady told it to ukpakareports.com herself, while doubting that she would be alive to tell her story as even her doctors gave up on her, having not seen anyone survive such cuts in her throat before.

Seeing the heavy stitches round her neck, where the murderers tore through her skin all round, one will wonder if her head had not fallen off from her body before it was joined together with stitches from her doctor. Coupled with that is another cut with a knife on the artery on her ankle, connecting her legs to her feet. According to her, this was a deliberate attempt by the ritualist to ensure that she does not leave the bush until he returns with a bigger cutlass since her head refused to fall off her body despite the cut round her neck.

According to Chioma, “on that evening, I closed work at Amawbia and felt I should use an okada to go back to the house, instead of the bus I usually board. I live at Nise, a village in Awka south. I met this tall and huge black man at Amawbia junction on a bike, when I beckoned on him, he was ready to carry me.

“I had no reason to suspect him, even though I should have. The man throughout did not say a word, so I would not know what his voice sounded like. I boarded his okada and he moved with me, we sped past a military check point at the border of Amawbia and Nise and were heading to St Paul’s College, Nise when he suddenly braked and said the only word I heard from him throughout the encounter. He said he saw a phone by the road side, and without seeking my permission, he simply reversed and went for it and on getting there we found out there was not phone, instead of continuing on the journey, he sped through a track road into the bush.

“All my enquiries to know why he was speeding into the bush brought forth no answer. At this point I sensed danger and thought it would be wiser to jump off the bike and save my life. I did just that, but as I landed on the ground I could not stand on time, even at than he too quickly dumped his bike and charged at me.

“The first thing he did was to use my hair tie to fasten round my throat, such that I found it very difficult to shout. We struggled with ourselves for quite some time, just as he dragged me further into the bush, then produced a knife which he now stabbed my neck with. As you are seeing these stitches on my neck, it is very deep. Something that my entire hand entered into. But surprisingly, I was not feeling any pain then, the man went further after trying to cut my neck from the front which is my throat, he stabbed be in the back of my neck and was pulling the knife so that the cut will join the one in the front and probably for my head to fall off.” She explained.

Though she was surprised why she should still be alive, she also believed that the spirit in her was more than the one in the man as he was obviously not happy that he could not behead her that easily. She stated that she laid still as if she was already dead, until the man feeling disgusted held her ankle and cut it.

This she said may be for him to go out and source for a bigger knife, while taking precaution so she does not regain consciousness and move away.

“After sometime, though I cannot say for how long, I opened my eyes and saw that the man was no longer there. I managed to move, how I did that I did not know. I found my way to the highway, where I fell on the road blocking the way. Every motorist that saw me refused to stop, rather they dodged my body and continued. Maybe they thought it was a set up. It was after sometime that the military people came, maybe someone had gone to alert them. That was how I was taken to the hospital and given treatment.”

Asked if she thinks it is a case of attempt to assassinate her, Chioma said she has not had any misunderstanding with any one recently or even in the past. She also stated that if the man was bent on killing him, he would have stabbed her on other parts of her body to ensure that she died, but the man was only particular about his neck, which she said is an indication that the man was seeking her head.

She advised people to be very careful who they went out with, or even the buses or okadas they entered as in her case, she never suspected that the okada man who she thought was looking for passengers could be having weapons and looking for a passenger he will be-head.

Detectives investigating a fraud case at the Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Ikoyi, Lagos have blown the cover of a 28-year-old Port Harcourt-based suspected cultist, who built a multi-million naira mansion that serves as his hideout in the Ojodu area of Lagos State.

Confirming the suspicion of the acting Inspector General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro that some outlaws, who have turned the Garden City into hell are from other states, the suspect who identified himself as Afolabi Adebayo, confessed to Daily Sun that his marauding gang operates in Port Harcourt and runs to Lagos to relax after making a hit.

Adebayo, who rides an automatic Cherokee Jeep marked HZ 892 AAA, confessed that he has made millions, even though he never had a visible means of livelihood.

Although he only described himself as "a local occultist," who also obtains money under false pretences, police believe there is more to Adebayo than meets the eye.
Wondering how he came about his fabulous wealth, the police are working on the theory that Adebayo could be a bank robber or one of the abductors who have been taking hostages and demanding ransom for their freedom.

When he was interviewed, Adebayo told Daily Sun: "I’m a local occultist. I also do 419 and I have an office in Port Harcourt with some boys working for me."
He claimed to have bought the plot on which he built the mansion for N2.8 million, insisting that he made his millions by curing people with back pains and helping those who wanted to be sexually virile.
Each time he was asked about members of his group or their whereabouts, he shivered and said: "Oh, I’m finished, please help me."

Adebayo, a native of Ikere town in Ekiti State, who said he was a fraudster, later confessed that the man who brought him into a dreaded cult group in Port Harcourt had died and he could not give the address of any member of the group, although he mentioned some names and said that whenever they had a job to do they made contacts on phone.

According to the Commissioner of Police at SFU, Mr Olayiwola Balogun, detectives were investigating a fraud case after receiving a petition from a woman who claimed that Adebayo duped her, when they stumbled on the other side of the suspect.

The police also recovered from Adebayo a Honda car and they have begun a bigger probe into the background of the suspect who did not have more than secondary school education.
