Those figures are almost always an indication of engine displacement in litres (and hence power).

so for instance, u can have a Honda accord 2.0 and the same model/year another Honda accord 2.4.

The 2.4 will have faster acceleration and greater speed, but will consume more fuel under same driving conditions.

Just like Novice rightly said, the 2.2 L engine will have more power but harder on fuel, but not by much maybe 1mpg, if you like to have some power, getting a 2.2L would be the way to go, 1.8L has a tiny bit more gas millage economy. But the 2.2L is worth for the power and can run on A/C more conviniently over long distance . hope this helps!
