A female Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mrs. Sylvia Sinaba, drowned in the Oniru Private Beach, Victoria Island, Lagos on Thursday while trying to save her secretary.

While the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident were still hazy, eyewitness account stated that the late Sinaba, who was a member of the Census Tribunal, drowned with the secretary she had tried to rescue.

It was learnt that the late senior advocate had joined other members of staff of her chamber for the end of year party of the legal firm.

“Her Legal Secretary, who was swimming, was struggling with the wave and she got in to rescue her. In the process, they both got taken by the high wave at the beach,” the source, who craved anonymity, said.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos Police Command, Mr. Frank Mba, who spoke with SATURDAY PUNCH on Friday on the telephone, confirmed that the incident.

Mba, a Superintendent of Police, said the command did not have the details of the incident.

“We just heard that a SAN drowned at the Oniru Private Beach but we have not been fully briefed. So, we cannot make any comments on it until we complete our investigation into what had happened. A legal practitioner, Mr. Festus Keyamo, described the late Sinaba as an outstanding lawyer.

“She was a rare breed, brilliant, dedicated, committed learned friend. Even in death, she took the risk to help humanity. She was a shinning legal star,” he said.

It's really sad.  Knowing how to swim is no protection, actually, because the ocean is not a swimming pool.  May their souls rest in peace.

May their souls rest in perfect peace. Its a very rear gesture for a madam or oga to risk their life for a subordinate, wish every oga and madam would do same for their subordinates.

May God grant the families the fortitude to bear these losses especially in a season like this.

The life guards are usually the area boys (the ones born and bred on the river bank with extra-ordinary swimming abilities) who renders their priceless services for a little token or egunje, but most Lagosians see them as nuisance when they ask for egunje, downplaying their importance until something like this happens.

Quite unfortunate for such valour to end in death. Even if one can swim, swimming in the ocean is a different ball game

Oniru is a private beach-let's not forget that!
The management of the beach should have ensured that life guards are around, or how are private beaches regulated world over?
Shouldn't that be part of the requirements to running a private beach.
What are we even saying-are there life guards in govt-owned beaches either?
Were they ever employed, if yes, why are they neva visible at the beaches.
I think soneone should be answering some questions.

this is a great loss. this is an opportunity for someone or the state to start life guards business at beaches most especially during

festive periods, whoever is rescue will later pay some fee.

What are you talking about? The lady acted on instincts. It's only a pity she died. She was brave and humble by risking her life for her subordinate. R.I.P.
