The Independent National Electoral Commission is seeking an additional N45.39bn for capital and recurrent expenditure in 2011.

This amount is contained in the 2011 budget forwarded by President Goodluck Jonathan to the National Assembly for approval.

New sets of furniture will cost INEC N69.7m; new generators, N78.1m; sundry security equipment, N128.1m; and security services, N90m.

The INEC also proposed N315.4 for advertising and publicity and N40m for the purchase of newspapers and magazines.

According to the budget, the election body plans to spend N90.27m on information technology consultants; and N135.15m on the maintenance of information and technology equipment in its offices.

It also intends to spend N135.6m on the procurement of computer consumables and office stationeries and N136.5m on payments to financial consultants.

About N13. 4bn is earmarked for salaries and wages; N54m for legal services; N77.3m for honorarium and sitting allowance; N63. 1m for refreshment and meals; N18.m for welfare packages; N90m for official homes; and N45.3m for telephone services.

International travels and related items for INEC officials is to cost tax payers N226.78m while local travels, transport training and other related items will gulp N360.6m.

Local training will gulp N225m ; international training, N270.6m; “subscription to professional bodies, N72.8m; staff medical expenses, N90m and drugs and medical supplies, N90. 5m. INEC is also proposing to spend N67.9m on postage and courier services.

waooo:

How much he needs is not d issue here so long as he delivers a credible election in 2011.
Large amount of monies is spent every four years and nothing positive comes out.here we are again intending to spending over 130 000 000 000 amidst serious poverty in the land.
if i may ask you ? Have you gone through the expenditure and see how INEC intends to waste our money ?
How many times do we have to spend money on equipment, furniture and other irrelevant things ?

So Jega is extorting money from the FG? HOW? People like you make me laugh. Did you take your time to read the post @ all? More than 7 billion naira is on capital evpenditure. Remember that INEC will continue to exist after the 2011 polls, it would embark on training and re-training of staff, pay salaries, etc. Unless you have proof of allegation(s) of corrupt enrichment against Jega, then shut your trap and do your own part to make the 2011 polls succeed.

Elections, the world over isn't cheap, it is expensive. No amount of money spent on the 2011 elections is too much, as long as it is free, fair, and credible. This is what the hoi polloi of Nigeria are asking for, we are not worried about the cost.

My problem with inec is :

1. what will eventually happen to these machine afterwards?
2. How about all previous machines, computers and others items procured by the former inec boss?
3. The big question: do other countries spend this much? we seem to forget things so easily in this country, what happened to option A-4.? won't it have been cheaper for us? why can't we insist on it ? every country should adopt a system that is affordable and suitable for it. We have tried optioned A-4, it worked! so, your answer is as good as mine lipsrsealed
