Alhaji,

I foresee problems for this thread O.

Anyway, most of us didn't know this until we read it in Things Fall Apart.  I doubt Igbo people of recent generations can really explain it either.  It wasn't their decision what was a longstanding ritual in their tradition.

And how come you didn't ask your granma?

As for Yorubas, we love twins.  I must have twins!  smiley

I sense something nefarious about this thread and your post towards the Igbo people OP. This section of Nairaland is dedicated to showing the good side of Nigeria's ethnicities.

I was going to give you the reason why twins were killed in SOME parts of Igboland in the past, but after seeing your past history towards the Ndi Igbo, I see you are trying to foment trouble.

I'll need to brush up on Yoruba traditions quick quick.  I seem to recall religious statues/artifacts of twins, but am not sure.  That may be one aspect though.  You know, there were many gods, so the twins worship may have been one particular orisha.  Anyway, the traditional religions folks can answer that quicker than it takes me to research Google Books or Google Scholar.  smiley smiley

I take it that you cannot answer the question. Any true native son of the soil, would not be afraid to answer their father's name. Why illustrate a negative aspect of pre-colonial Igbo culture, even though this was not practiced amongst all Igbo communities?

I bet you did not know that it was practiced amongst Ibibios as well and other Eastern communities. Not just the Igbo.

Killing of twins was a barbaric tradition practised by many Nigerian groups not just Ndigbo. Even within Alaigbo, not all the Igbo clans practised the so called tradition. I happen to come from a part of Alaigbo where that tradition then existed. But thank God for the beauty of Christ and advent of Christianity, this evil practice was abolished 130 years ago (Mary Slessor).
The Igbo culture as a culture that is at the forefront of Tropical African cultures is so unique but not static. A lot has changed in the last 150 years including killing of twins. In my part of Alaigbo, only twins who come into the world as male and female were thrown into the evil forest. Because natives then believed it was an incest. Like a boy sleeping with his sister. The natives never tolerated cases of incest either as adults or babies.

Mary Slessor started her mission in the areas that the evil tradition was so widely practiced, e.g Efik-Ibibio areas.

You mean incestuous on the part of the fetuses, right?  Or, like, the 2 genders in one womb symbolized an inbreeding happened in the past?

Anyway, thanks very much for that.  I never knew why.  Most of us read it for the first time in Things Fall Apart, and didn't research it further.

I believe the Ibos are a proud people with a rich culture.  We all have incidents of one form of sacrifice or another in our past.  I hesitate to call any of us barbaric.  The oyinbos kill milions of babies every year via state-sanctioned abortions and no one calls them barbaric.   lipsrsealed

I stopped taking you seriously the moment I knew you were a religious fundermentalist aka fanatic.

People like you are worse than Hitler seriously!  When did abortion = killing babies?

Are you going to start again?

I should have put it in quotes?  Would that make you happy?!  I'm comparing how practices are viewed by different people.  Leave me alone.

Does everyone view abortion the same? People did sacrifices due to their ignorance and they know better. I do not accept outiders defining us. So I get defensive. Big deal!

How am I like Hitler? And how am I a fanatic?

Superstition was very rife in the 19th century Igboland and Africa. What our fathers believed in then is not what we believed in today. They so much believed in the santity of ALA, as a result they will go to any extent to keep it sacred.
But killing of twins was not Igbowide, only a handful of clans practiced it then including my own very clan. It was prominent in the Ibibio-Efik areas as a result Mary Slessor devoted her time fighting against this obnoxious tradition in that area.
At the moment, we should be thankful to christianity for all the good tidings it brought to mankind not just in Africa but the entire universe.

I find your line of reasoning to be in congruent with what you'd expect of and from a religious fanatic

Abortion does not equal to killing babies, hope i did not come off as a philosopher.

Time and again, you always allow your religious upbringing to colour your outlook and how you define yourself and events

The other day it was about gays, now it is abortion.

You forgot about me not wanting USA involvement in Nigeria's security and defense issues!  angry

You will not find me use any religious reasoning for my opinions re: "gays."  Why?  Because it isn't religion-based.

Also, the posts above wasn't about my view of abortion, but was playing devil's advocate where others are defining the rights and wrongs of what other cultures do.  I saw the word "barbaric" (in Uweh's post) and I shifted into defense mode.

Twins we killed :

(1) For the same reason people kill their relatives/friends in money rituals

(2)For the same reason people visit juju priests/babalawo/pastors/imams. . .to solve their problems

(3)For the same reason Moslem's/Christians murder themselves all in the name of religious differences

The bottom line if gross ignorance and immaturity to take responsibility for the problems!

Nuff said! ! !
