The thread clearly says, "Post YOUR Vista problems" and that is exactly what I did. I was using windows and lost a complete year's financial data because of a virus. I had to go into a 3 week battle with my auditor. I have switched to Mac OSX since and have had no issues, no system crashes, no virus, etc. So personally, I still favour Mac OSX over windows for my kind of work. There are still PCs in my office being used but for specific tasks and are NOT connected to the internet.
@bigrovar, How has your own experience with Vista been? Are you more comfortable with XP or you are happy with it?

I found out that there was no topic in nairaland dedicated to window vista, and many of the bugs and issues that comes with.hence these topic is for those with vista problems,or those who need advise on applications compatibility issues with vista.or what to use and not to use with vista, IN other words all your vista questions and problems should be pasted here.so that people who have the solutions can help out.
in case you didn't read the first page , as u can see the purpose of the thread is not to rant about vista , its for people who have a problem and need solution for their problem. so please lets keep it clean , if u have an issue with vista/ms and would like to rant about it the u can always open another thread , lets stop calling each other names and keep this thread clean and healthy for people who really need help .

dude to be frank i no longer use vista on windows so i am not in the best position to help you out. that is the reason why i dont support the thread anymore because i am very rusty when it comes to trouble shooting windows problems nowaday and am not as good as i was, but am sure some1 here would come to your aid , i did some search on google but i could not test out the results which looks promising so u can try them out your self http://www.google.com.ng/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=com.ubuntu%3Aen-GB%3Aunofficial&q=VPN+vista+problem&btnG=Search&meta=

The setup is actually across two different OS platforms. Leopard to Vista.

Well, can others come up with threads to solve problems on other OS? Ex, bigrover and co?

Hi, after formating and installing vista on my desktop, the USB hub is now selecting removable and other USB devices. If i plug my flash drive it will recognize but if i plug either a removable hard disk or printer cable it won't recognize. I can't install my printer.

Please what do i do. I know it could be vista is not compatable with the USB drivers.

1.for like 3months now i havn''t been able to download files,or "save as" be it documents or pix or applications.it just doesn't give any response wen i click on the file.

2.i can chat with my list of buddy on yahoo msg,but as soon as i enter into any of the chat rooms and click on a name, the msg stops responding, and i would have to end d program and sign in again if i have to chat with people onmy list.

i use internet explorer as my browser, used to use norton antivirus dat came with the system, but it expired like 3 months ago and i just installed macafee 2days ago.

Pls do you have any solution for me? esppecially with d download issue.

Thanx

Internet explorer is very buggy and prone to a lot of viruses and spyware. Please change your browser to either Mozilla firefox or Google chrome. As for the Yahoo messenger problem, try uninstalling and reinstalling with the latest version. Do you have .Net installed?

USB flashdrives work on both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0, sadly most printers and external harddrives work properly only with the latter so try a different USB port. your problem has nothing to do with USB drivers or vista.

even though Vista by nature is notoriously slow, sometimes its the host machine that's the culprit. if you are sure your box meets the minimum specs required to run Vista then you need to either temporarily halt your antivirus app (most, especially Mcafee, are notorious for eating resources and bogging a system down), or you need to prune your startup items. press start, type msconfig in the search field, go to startup and deselect items you dont need to run at login (eg webshots, messenger, winamp agent, windows media player config daemon/streamer, downloader etc). restart the system.

or at best you can download and install vista service packs.

1. sounds like your trusted zone internet security policies are in enforcement. in control panel go to internet options (or from within internet explorer open Tools, internet options), select Internet under webcontent, under security level select custom level, scroll down and select File Download, set as Enable.

2. you are probably using an old version of Y! Messenegr which loads ActiveX object whenever you load up a chatroom, and vista is fussy when it comes to arbitrary loading of ActiveX scripts. simply upgrade to a vista version of messenger.

Internet explorer, though best for many websites since most of the internet was designed with IE in mind, is the worst browser to use. i recommend Opera or Firefox (google Chrome, being based on Apple webkit just like Safari, isnt terribly good on web standards for now so some sites will not display/function properly).

mcafee, as i mentioned earlier, is a resource hog. norton on the other hand has a good antiviral payload but is notorious for blocking ports in its internet security settings. you may want to try AVG Free, its light on resources and has near-constant daily updates.

soolari:

hey guy please wht can i do, it is always saying not responding and somehow slow

the problem is the explorer process freezes when you click on any file item or explorer window/menu when explorer is busy (you see the spinning blue circle). do not unnecessarily click on anything when you see the spinning busy icon as you will get a Not Responding message, wait for the process to finish whatever the hell its doing first.

windows vista service pack 1 reduces the frequency of lockups and freezes.

your problem isnt quite clear: is it the cdrom that isnt working or the entire system?

NB: it'll really help us help you if you kindly provide the following details alongside your problem.

1. your machine and its specs (ram, video card. no harddisk or cpu necessary).this will assist us in determining whether you're properly equipped to run vista.

2. the vista edition you use (basic, premium, ultimate, business) and version if you know (ie 32bits, or 64bits. 64means you probably have a multicore machine which is faster than 32bits). it wont matter if you dont know the version.

3. the kind of antiviral app you use, and the programs that run on startup (you can find them on the bottom right side of the taskbar). this will help in knowing wheter something is eating your ram.
Re: Post Your Vista Problems Here by ExInferis(m): 11:19am On Nov 18, 2008
bigbrovar, permit me a short rant; uspry1, sorry for the following.

@djcn

ive read your posts in the previous page and concluded that you are such a jerk. must you always insult people for not liking windows? if thats the case then you have a huge demography to wage your war against.

and whereever on earth did you read that one needs to be a programmer in order to know whetehr or not an OS sucks? do i need to be a carpenter to know a chair sucks? need i be a baker to tell a certain muffin is a piece of sh1t? should i study mechanical engineering and the inner workings of the internal combustion engine to tell a car sucks?

all one needs is excperience and the benefit of using alternatives with which to compare. microsoft doesnt create windows for programmers; programmers create windows for end-users and these end-users who part with cash expect something to work 90% of the time. if it doesnt, one has the right to gripe.

and kindly stop making out to be this hotshot programmer/inventor; it doesnt place you in any good standing with the rest of us who perhaps know about computing more than you do. you just read arbitrary books and then regurgitate someone's texts as if you even know what they mean. i got a good larf when you were going on about programming a display (idiot, you program graphics cards/video subsystems, not displays. d'uh. the only microcontrollers in displays are the very basic ones that control things like native resolution, picture RGB settings, contrast and horizontal/vertical alignments).

the only sort of programmers i have respect for are device drivers coders; not application programmers which i even doubt you are (one can get a good windows app up and running with a rudimentary knowledge of C++ or C#, thanks to visual studio, .Net and Turbo Delphi!).

if you want to reduce this to a bragging contest I'm sure i will vaporize that self-inflated ego of yours because i know my way around code and electronics more than you do. people like you study java and get an MSCE or CCNA or whatever and you think that qualifies you as a serious techy.

you claim to have written apps for the OS X platform; i challenge you to put up code samples here or screenshots of the apps, else you are a big fat liar.

i have not seen one single post here in which you genuinely offer help to someone's problems.
so  shut up already, you are becoming obnoxious.

Please I need assistance here. I use a HP tablet pc, Vista Home Premium. But the thing doesn’t scan documents when I connect to a scanner. So bought a genuine vista ultimate at a shop in Abuja and gave the IT guy there to upgrade it. Now the issue is that the appearance of the screen has changed, and I can’t even adjust the brightness. Also the webcam and fingerprint are no longer working. The guy has tried to install drivers even from the websites. But he doesn't seem to be making headways.

Please what do I do. Can anyone suggets somebody in Abuja who can help? Can the drivers be gotten from the recovery discs without restoring my system back to home premium? Advance thanks.

you probably used a scanner cd driver not meant for vista

there was no need to upgrade to ultimate; all versions of vista contain the same hardware support.

to restore your system, either get on the net and allow windows update to check online for your drivers, or download HP's recovery tool from HP support to recover from your recovery partition.

hi, Is it compulsary to UPDATE Vista,
Yes/no

Cos i find out dat my first update on my PC take about 8 gigabyte of my HDD space,
and i use Vista Ultimate Edition,

Wic 1 is beta btw Vista business and Ultimate

I said i upgraded to vista ultimate. Of course the home premium would go off.

The scanner cd is meant for vista, and it is clearly written on it. Its a HP photosmart series, scanner, copier and printer. And my system was printing with it, but not scanning. Before buying the home premium tablet pc, I was formerly using a home basic, and i could scan with it. So i was under the impression that all vista home premiums don't scan. That was why i upgraded to ultimate. Anyone using a vista home premium should please try scanning lets see if it goes.

Well i'll try and check online for the drivers, but i must confess i'm not good in that area.
Thanks

its not compulsory, but given its antics its a darn good idea especially if you are running on a pre-service pack vista version.

vista business should not even be considered by home users (or any other user in fact) because the only difference is that it lacs media center and media player (perhaps because a business environment doesnt need entertainment? but what do they say about all work and no play making jack a dull boy?)

meanwhile some of the features actually required by businesses are locked up in vista ultimate!

so in a shell, ultimate, as the name implies, is better (it has dreamscene support, which lets you use videos as your wallpaper if you care about such trivial things).

@smartkid

vista incorporates plug-and-play support for basic scanning, accessible via the Cameras and Scanners applet. its a bit daft to think vista premium doesnt support scanning where vista basic does. your problem probably lies with com port settings or something else but definitely not windows vista itself. you could have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the AIO machine, it works sometimes.

rather than bother with updating the drivers yourself, let the HP software do it via Software Update.
Re: Post Your Vista Problems Here by pritypeety(f): 5:47am On Nov 21, 2008
@ smartkid I use vista home premium and it scans photocopy and print cos its a business machine.
So maybe, maybe not the driver that was sold to you was wrongly packed because dats the only reason I think it will not work or the scanner was not properly configured on ur system.

there is an involving workaround towards installing dial up modems in vista because most of these CDMA modems have drivers that are not fully vista-compatible; mostly the setup stalls when allocating com ports for the modem. i do know how to set up Starcomms 1x using their desktop phone but not for the handhelds and other networks.

your options are to reinstall vista from a recovery, set up xp on a separate partition, or use a virtual machine like parallels to run xp from within vista.

yes, only third party alternatives which sometimes offer better features. but you can always upgrade to vista home premium if you absolutely must have the snipping tool.

your homepage maybe reloading from cache; vista has issues when it detects multiple networks. go to network and sharing center, at the top of your internet connection select Customize, set the network as PUBLIC NETWORK. now choose your LAN and customize it as PRIVATE NETWORK. hopefully this should resolve your issues.

Zaminu:

base score is a combination of many factors in relation to how properly equipped your system is in running vista. the factors include RAM, CPU, and graphics card. if you are running on a desktop machine simply upgrade the mentioned components for better ones. for example if your board supports it, get a faster RAM module(sometimes the speed of memory matters more than the quantity) at least something in the region of 800mhz (or 600mhz minimum).

you can find good Nvidia or ATI graphics chipsets/GPUs for the PCI or AGP slot.

CPU doesnt really matter much but multicores are a good idea.

if you are on a laptop or cant afford the upgrade components then turn of Vista Aero or downgrade to Vista basic.

OnoEdosio:

Windows media player stopped working.

info not clear enough, either reinstall windows (upgrading nedia player doesnt always work; the previous one must be in working order) or try alternatives such as itunes, winamp, Jet Audio, songbird, kantaris, or media monkey. most of these have better codecs than WMP.

try to find out the sort of sound device in your laptop, or better yet give us the model so we can search for you.
