According to CNN, "The popular protests in Tunisia that have caused upheaval in the government were sparked by Mohamed Bouazizi, a 26-year-old unemployed college graduate, who set himself on fire in protest". There is a concern that demonstrators  are turning to self-immolation in Egypt, Algeria, and Mauritania.

I don't think Nigerians should worry about this new trend, we Nigerians are either cowards or are too much of cynics to carry out such protests. Even Mutallab ensured that his attempt failed by intentionally not following through with his insane act. Acts like that are simply un Nigerian!  The day that we have Nigerian Kamikazes is the day that the moon will turn purple, and both Mohammed and Jesus Christ will return to earth in a space ship sharing the same cabin.

We are just too smart for our own good.

Does this mean that no Nigerian has ever committed suicide ?

Yes, because there is not one Nigerian person that can hurt themselves intentionally. In fact Nigerian people are physically incapable of causing harm to themselves, it's a medical fact.

@Litmus, The issue is not just suicide, which is typically a result of some underlying medical/mental problem, but a suicide carried out by a sane person, in protest (of the government). Nigerians are incapable of doing this. Frankly suicide rate in Nigeria is the lowest in the world.

Not just Nigerians, black people in general. . . seems like it would be much rarer amongst us. I don't have evidence to back this up, just a gut feeling.

Um, i wouldn't say suicide bombers are sane people, if anything the former are often saner than the later.

Your assessment is quite wrong. Every unsuccessful suicide bomber who was caught, arrested, and tried has never been proved to be insane. These people are anything but insane, they know exactly what they are attempting and do it with a sane mind.

Suicide isn't bravery. it's cowardice.

at the very least, they have weak minds easily brainwashed.

Look, the kamikazes did not rescue Japan and they aren't going to rescue your argument  if you've a mind to reference them as a case in point.

Are you insinuating that Nigerians have superior minds that are not as weak as those of Japanese, or Tunisians who essentially ran their dictatorial leader out of the country by protests triggered by a selfless act of self-immolation?

I tend to think that you people who allow your leaders to hold you as hostages and continue to r.ape you of your funds without any fear of protest or revolt, are weaker.

See one man, initiate the freedom of Millions in Tunisia, I bet No Nigerian can do that, selfishness and tribalism+religiouslism will not allow us to fight for freedom.

And this also remind me of Foxconn worker jump down from top building in protest of barbaric act against the freedom in the Iphone Assembling factory in China.

Not mentioning A Romanian man protesting his government's austerity measures whom jump down from Parliament's balcony.

If Nigerian will start, may b from NAIRALANDERS. grin grin grin grin
