Sudan Home To The Largest Nigerian Population Of Any Destination Country? by Onlytruth(m): 6:35pm On Jan 24, 2011
Sudan home to the largest Nigerian population of any destination country?

Why is Sudan home to the largest Nigerian population of any destination country? The most common explanation is a long history of sociocultural ties between Sudan and northern Nigeria, where most Nigerians in Sudan are from. Also, northern Nigerians who travel over land for the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia go through Sudan, and many have settled there over the years.

In the 1993 Sudanese census, West Africans, under the label Nigerian tribes, were estimated to be about 1.4 million, or 7.4 percent of northern Sudan's total population. The Hausa in Sudan, who work mainly in agriculture, are believed to be the largest Hausa diaspora in the world. The Fulani among them can be divided into cattle owners and urbanized Fulani, while most of the Kanuri, believed to be among the earliest dwellers, have been fully Arabized.

Nigeria's ambassador to Sudan between 2005 and 2007, Mr. Dahiru Suleiman, was quoted in the Nigerian media as saying that Nigerians hold positions in the Sudanese government and the security services like the police but that most are subsistence farmers, poor and poorly educated.

Recent actions of the Sudanese government suggest concerns about the legal status of these settlers. In March 2010, it was widely reported that Sudan deported 58 Nigerians, all northerners, and most of them women. The Sudanese authority said that some of the deportees had fake/ expired travel documents. However, journalist Ajikanle Nurudeen reported that the deportees were sent home because they were a nuisance to Sudan, as most of the deported women were blind and were beggers.

In recent years, Sudan has become a destination for younger Nigerians for work and study. BBC Sport journalist Oluwashina Okeleji reported that Nigerian footballers play in the Sudanese league to get on the radar of European scouts and hope to ultimately move to Europe.

FYI, there are up to 3 million Nigerian immigrants in the UK. In fact, Nigeria is the most populous non-UK racial group in UK followed closely by Jamaica.

Still unreliable. And to think that this is a 2007 graph?

It even failed to show that there are more Nigerians in SA than Togo. SA is not even represented!!!!

Then, a lot of Nigerians in Sudan would not have gotten their by visas or say legally, so how did they track the numbers? Dem get winch

This people are not Nigerians, these people have settled in Sudan even b4 Nigeria had her independence. The hausa's/ Fulanis have been known to travel far & wide especially in d Sahel & desert regions. There are Hausas/fulanis tribes from Mauritania in western part of Africa to Sudan in d East. These people have made these journey 100's of years ago. Because of d racist policy of Northern Sudan they do not want to give these settlers who  have being in Sudan from time memorial citizenship in effect making them stateless. How come they are Nigerians & not Niger republic citizen or even Malian how do u seperate one hausa from one these countries from another. If they deport them to Nigeria, Nigeria should deport them back, we should not be accepting deportees whose family has settled in d Sudan 300 or 400 years ago, no wonder there is an increase in Boko Haram activitis & other insurgency in d north.

Smart observation.  cool

Most of the responders so far are retards. They can't even see the gist of the story.
I don't care where a Nigerian chooses to live in the world, provided they do not bring terrorism to Nigeria.

Sudan is known worldwide for extreme brand of Islam and terrorism.

My worry is that I don't want bombs exploding in Enugu. That's all.
Re: Sudan Home To The Largest Nigerian Population Of Any Destination Country? by Onlytruth(m): 8:55pm On Jan 24, 2011
I also found out that most of the northern Nigerians in northern Sudan are farmers.

What happened to farming in northern Nigeria?

Why go all the way to Sudan to farm?

Can't they farm in Nigeria?

they must be nigeriens, not nigerians.

This Nigerian/Nigerien wahala, I think one of these countries should change their adjectival form.
Maybe Niger should be Nigerese while Nigeria remains Nigerian. Just saying because they are inadvertently increasing the population of the North.

Note: Nigerian and Nigerien are pronounced exactly the same by the English.

The figures released by The U.K statistics in 2006 put Nigerians in the U.K at approx 600,000.

Attached is the exact information from the website referenced by X-factoria, and he went ahead to conclude that Nigerians in UK are 3m.
I wonder why Nigerians are sometimes incapable of telling themselves the simple truth.

Since when did "estimate" equal "accurate"?

And he is quick to accuse innocent folks of lying.

Isn't spinning the worst form of lying?

Supposedly 80K Nigerians in the Houston area alone, as of 2003 (http://www.america.gov/st/washfile-english/2003/November/20031121162843yeroc9.750003e-02.html).

Tack on Los Angeles, Dallas, DC Metro area, NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, and I wouldn't be surprised if the pop were north of 500k.
