Tension in Jos as soldiers escort Hausa traders to market

There was palpable tension in Jos on Wednesday as some soldiers attached to the Special Task Force attempted to escort some Hausa traders to Gada Biu and Abbatori Meat Market.

Trouble started when some youths mobilised against the traders and their military escorts. They forced the soldiers and the traders to flee, even as the soldiers shot sporadically.

The sounds of gunshots sent shivers down the spines of residents as they scampered to safety.

There was commotion along Ahmadu Bello Way and Old Bukuru Park as some banks and traders hurriedly shut their shops.

It was gathered that at an earlier peace parley arranged by the STF between the youth and the Hausa butchers, the butchers had pleaded that they be allowed to resume their business in the area. But the youth were said to have insisted that the exit of the butchers after the Christmas Eve bomb blast “was a good riddance to a bad rubbish.”

One of the youth leaders, who simply identified himself as Gyang, said that allowing the butchers to return to the market would be detrimental to their safety because the butchers had been collaborating with their attackers.

But the STF commander, Brig.-Gen. Hassan Umaru, could not comment on the involvement of soldiers in relocating Hausa traders.

On the call that the JTF in Jos be disbanded, he said, “As a military officer I’m not worried by such calls to remove us from Jos, it is normal, let people have their say, it is their right to complain or express themselves. But I will advise that people should allow the Federal Government and those in authority to handle the issue appropriately.”

Umaru also said, “The issue of the women protesting is not encouraging, the women go about throwing stones at members of the task force.

“It’s not something I will accept, members of the STF can spring at the slightest provocation especially what happened at K/Vom, I had to control my men. I could see their annoyance but I insisted they should not shoot at the women.”

These people are suppose to be in charge of securing life? Clearly by the commander's comment both he and his men are willing and okay with shooting unarmed women. shocked

The STF boss's words are a chilling reminder of the absolutely neanderthal and low IQ nature of our armed forces. The army needs to be totally purged and rebuilt from scratch. The current position is unacceptable.

Can you believe this?

It's like he's saying "We dont have to spare their life, we just do because we HAVE to". I fear for these women.

Do you want those going there to be killed? Have you heard of soldiers escorting Beroms to hausa settlement areas? No. Open your eyes, you are alive to see strategic expansionism going on untouched in your country.

Nigerian army lost civility in 1966. What we inherited after that is a monster unfit for any nation aspiring to peace and civility.

See a civilized army.

It may sound disgusting, but that's just the reality of things in Jos these days. Jos is now divided into settlements , you need to know where not to venture into. The Gada Biu, Rukuba road  area is mostly berom and the Hausa don't have any business going there, just like the Bauchi road area is mostly Hausa and the Berom don't have any business going there. Or  like the Apata area is mostly Igbo settlers and the Hausa don't have any business going there.

Figures that the Hausa traders are being protect by their brothers in the armed services. Where were the soldiers who were protecting the Christians from the South?

Right now, I see the armed services of Nigeria as the enemy as well. They are not neutral.

Smh.

Berom have been turned into Palestinians. Colonized within their own territory.

Very sad.

Personally i don't see anything wrong in escorting Hausa traders to market but the must also do that to berom's and other tribes in jos not only to the Hausa's.
The truth is that Nigeria has no security system. We need to purge them all if not disqualify all of them and start afresh. am no saying with baise mind for Hausa's, am simply saying it because most of Nigeria securities are uneducated, so how are we gona go about it.
Look at this event "one day a Nigeria force man a captain for that matter,he came for business with me here in china do you know that this man don't know how to operate a computer,he cant even save his contacts on mobile phone, and the man am talking about is between 34 to 35 age. so why should we trust this kind of people with our life.

True. Even though Kaduna has experienced peace these past few years, the people still remember and they now take precautions, you won't find a Christian attempting to live in Tudun wada or a hausa man in Sabo, the locals now understand where they are safest if any conflict should start. They stick to their communities.

Right now all Hausa dominated markets are open to all in respective of tribe or religion. Only berom areas are still restricted & tense. And for your information Berom's are too lazy to engage in any business venture be it petty trading, for that simple reason the igbo's are the instigating the berom's to chase the Hausa away so that they can control 100% of the market while at the same time maintain their share in Huasa dominated areas. .

No wonder they control the markets everywhere they settled.

The Berom Youths would have left them, let everyone see whether the army would have escorted the Hausa traders to their business places for the rest of eternity!

I don't even know what sort of security system we have in this country. If they were escorting the traders to retrieve their items, it would have been a different thing, but intending to escort them for their daily businesses in the middle in that terrible tension, they really lost sense of their duty! I thought the task force was there to restore Peace?

And that commander really needs to know he's in the military! With their presence there, attrocities are still taking place, so how did he expect the women to react? Not to talk about their extra curricular activity of escorting one party up and down the whole place in the midst of all the turmoil.

For not allowing Hausa/Fulani to go about their business, this is nothing but infringing on their human right, It is advisable for Hausa to concentrate and kill some Berom people now for doing this.
I will like Berom people too to kill some Hausa/Fulani during the attack.

It's an army, not a police force.  Army officers generally shoot to kill, which is why they are not deployed domestically.  They are not trained to deal with civilians.  The people that deployed the army to do the job of the police are to blame for any casualties due to army aggression.

Then I think it's time we have a branch of the armed forces that is trained to deal with civilians. Like the American have the National Guard.
