Telecommunications job interviews can be multi-stage. These interviews are essentially a combination of a behavioral interview and a technical testing process. It’s strongly advised to do thorough preparation for these interviews. The telecommunications job interviews are competitive, and you need a good solid average of correct answers at all stages of the process to get the job.

Telecommunications Job Interview Technical Test Preparation

The technical questions are concentrated in the testing stages, although there may be one or two in the verbal interview. These tests may require some very basic research of the employer’s business and, most importantly, their business systems.

Typical questions can be very simple and concerned entirely with necessary knowledge, but the tests carry a lot of weight in the final decision to employ candidates. This is like grading for a final mark in school, and the tests are about 50 percent of the result.

The questions may involve:

* Voice channels

* Signal channels

* Pulse code modulation

* Satellite voice communications

* Byte sizes

* VOICE

* Microprocessor functions

* Interrupt requests

* Data packets

These are generally multiple choice questions, and they’re broadly based on technical training tests. You may also get communications questions based on text interpretation and other standard business tests. If you haven’t done one of these tests before, or not for a while, it’s a good idea to do some practice tests, which you can find online. Practice tests allow you to adjust mentally to the testing environment and get some fluency in your handling of test questions.
Telecommunications Job Behavioral Interview Preparation

The behavioral job interview is a typical job interview, but in a telecommunications interview, the technical element remains part of the natural area of focus and will form part of your answers.

Typical behavioral questions can look simpler than they are. In the field of telecommunications systems, your answer has to be technically correct as well as behaviorally correct. Remember that you’re speaking to technical experts who can evaluate both issues.

Here is an example of a question:

“You’re the team leader. A lightning strike has knocked out a local exchange. Nobody’s sure what the situation is. How do you deal with it?”

This is a problem solving question. It involves:

* Correct procedures

* Safety procedures

* Quick, effective response to the situation

* Efficient practices

* Team leadership and organizational skills

* Good assessment skills

* Situational awareness

As a technician, you can see why the interviewers need a good, thorough response to a question like this. It’s absolutely vital that a team leader knows how to handle this situation. They can’t recommend anyone who doesn’t. On the technical level, the answer must be right.

“Team” questions are an important part of the telecommunications job behavioral interview. Telecommunications jobs are group efforts, and teamwork and good practices have ramifications at the technical level.
