April Poll: Buhari Strikes Accord With Ciroma’s Nplf by Probity100: 2:11am On Feb 06, 2011
The presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Muhamadu Buhari, may have started enjoying underground support from the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) headed by Mallam Adamu Ciroma, at a high level for promotion of his presidential aspiration, Sunday Tribune can authoritatively report.

The reported deep rapport between Buhari and the NPLF leaders has been the reason Ciroma and others have been refraining from making public statements of late, most especially since the consensus option they had prepared as a joker for the return of power to the North proved unworkable.

The consensus candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, had lost the PDP presidential primary to President Goodluck Jonathan some few weeks ago, whereas, the outcome of the primary which reportedly jolted the northern elders also gingered them into action to design another option.

Some members of CPC in separate chats with Sunday Tribune revealed that Ciroma had inputs in the emergence of some governorship and senatorial candidates for CPC, just as other members of the forum are said to be making useful contributions to the progress of the party in the North.

Although Buhari and the NPLF leaders were yet to sit on a round table to iron out some political issues to be agreed on before the April general election, indications are rife that such a meeting would take place, most likely after INEC had released the names of candidates for different elective positions in Nigeria.

Those who spoke on the new development told Sunday Tribune that it was the northern elders who suggested that Buhari should not foreclosed the option of re-opening negotiations with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) so that the two parties will work out a formula for taking over power in April. Although the northern consensus candidate, Atiku, is currently out of Nigeria on self imposed convalescence, he is said to have been kept abreast of the moves by the northern elders and the prospect of meeting Buhari at the nick of time ahead of the April polls.

A key member of the CPC, Mr Osita Okechukwu, in a chat confirmed the unfolding political scenarios, stating that the CPC’s rapport with the northern leaders was expected on the basis that the North never towed with its resolve to regain the office of president in April.

Meanwhile, the CPC is also not leaving any stone unturned in wooing as many leaders as possible from the South West in support of the presidential aspiration of General Buhari as the party has returned to the drawing board to design a programme to this effect. Party members informed Sunday Tribune that the plan by CPC to make in-road into the South West is pegged along a possible understanding it may eventually strike with the ACN, and on the other hand the level of goodwill that Buhari’s running mate, Pastor Tunde Bakare could muster in the geo-political zone.
