School reopening: Parents protest N25,000 COVID-19 test in Ogun

With schools reopening for graduating pupils this week after months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic, parents of pupils in private secondary schools in Ogun State on Sunday kicked against the request of N 25, 000 COVID- 19 test fee by the government.

Many of the parents, who took their demonstrations to the streets, faulted the decision of the government to ask them to pay N25 , 000 on each pupil before they could be allowed to resume.

The state government had said no boarding school pupil would be allowed to resume without a valid negative COVID - 19 test certificate.
The government also asked the parents to take their wards to designated places for the test between Friday and Monday .

The dissatisfied parents on Sunday thronged the MTR 250 bed specialist hospital, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the designated place for the pupils in Abeokuta.

It was gathered that attempts by the parents to get their children tested for free failed as they were asked to pay N 25,000 on each child .

When our correspondent visited the venue , it was observed that many parents were locked out of the facility.

Some of the parents, who spoke with The PUNCH did not want their names in print because of attendant consequences but they lamented that the payment of N25 , 000 for COVID- 19 test shows the government cared less about its citizens.

They complained that the economic reality in the country has made it difficult to pay such an amount of money.

Attempts to get the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Primary and Secondary Education, Ronke Soyombo , failed as she did not pick calls to her line and did not reply to the messages sent to her mobile .

25k per student is damn crazy. The Ogun state government should know that some parents may have more than one pupil to cater for, and none of them have received anything so special in social welfare or palliatives from the govt in order to cope with the challenging economic downturn...Meanwhile, when u hear the monies they keep claiming to have spent per state during this pandemic, you'll think they transformed every Nigerian to automatically worth being on Forbes list.

Government say make we cancel waec and you parents said they were Fulani herdsmen and don't value education.

Now pay for testing before going back to school una dey protest.

We have a big problem in Nigeria. We expect so much from our government forgetting they are utterly useless. Go and pay 25k for covid-19 test then write the waec which just above 60% may pass

I think it's okay for private schools if the fees is for students in boarding house only. But public secondary school should try and charge less.

The government care less about it's citizenry, it is very obvious, both the state and federal government are both heartless and incompetent.

Ghen ghen

Government and wishful thinking.
The normal thing is for them to test everyone before entering school but we know they have not been sincere with the whole covid-19 issue. Now they have asked children to resume but have not given the schools any support. Government know the virus is scam but they are ashamed of admitting it cos they have been cashing out since.
