Nonverbal Communication in Nigeria

Be careful about eye contact. Constant and direct eye contact can be seeing as being intrusive. Therefore gazing at the shoulder level or the forehead is considered polite.

Touching or making gestures when speaking is very common and should not be interpreted as having any intimate undertone.

Don't use your left hand to give or receive objects. The left hand is considered unclean.

Shake hands upon meeting someone and don't forget to smile! Sometimes men may place their hand on the other person's shoulder during a handshake. Shake hands again upon departing.

Don't shake hands with a woman unless she initiates it.

Exchange hugs and kisses with people you know well.

To rush a greeting is extremely rude; spend time inquiring about the other person’s general well-being.

Thumb extended upward is considered a very rude signal.

Kind of a side-note, sorry OP.

I hate it when hawkers make those noises with their mouths. The best way to describe it is as a reverse kissing noise. As if they're calling for the attention of a dog. I find it so offensive but almost everyone does it! angry

tpiah!:

anything to do with the left hand.

That's a good one. Also, don't talk too much, especially if you're around elders. When I was in Nigeria I kept quiet and/or left when elders were talking. My brother ran his mouth and stayed present. All my aunties and uncles were talking down on him to my parents lol.

don't wink at me unless I'm close to you and that depends on the relationship I have with you,

Some Americans will wink to solidify a point. As if to say, "Told you so!" Some will wink rather than give a verbal 'hello.'

women trying to shake men is gaining acceptance but traditionally was offensive.

left is considered
as less important to the right hand.By extension when you greet Nigerian with left hand, they interprete the gesture to mean that they are less important. Another reason for not using left to greet is becos it has some traditional religion meaning!

Walking past an elderly without acknowledging him/her even if you know or don't know the person.

Offering an elderly person one or three pieces of anything. I am told it has to be even. huh

When you serve, you pour the person his/her drink in the glass cup unless the person tells you not to bother.

Some market women find it rude when you touch their wares.

I heard among the black Americans it is bad when someone touches your nose with her/her finger. It's an insult against one's mother. I don't know how if it is true.
