My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by iluvnaija: 4:18pm On Mar 17, 2011
My fellow Nigerians, What corruption has done to this country, I wonder if nigeria will ever be the way it was in the 70's when nigerians dont really no much about corruption.

I travelled to be to pay visit to my relative at Stella Obasanjo hospital benin city. From my view the hospital is one of the best hospital in nigeria. The facilities in the hospital is amazing. But the thing that baffles me is the management, it is very poor, they are consigned about what they will make for themselves than how to sustain the hospital.

Government made some treatment for children are free like malaria etc, free antenatal for pregnant women I think that is very kind of the government, But there one thing that is very sad which I think the Government is not aware and I believe the management of the hospital is doing it to make money for themselves is the issue of food. If you are admitted in that hospital, management has mandated it that you must pay for the food, is a must. Seeing the food alone you do not need to be told that you don't need it or you will fall sick. If hospital is mandating patients to buy food from the hospital, the food should be palatable and well prepared that in-fact should be the best prepared meal. But instead they mandate you to pay for it if you like it or not and obviously you wont eat and 90% of the patients in the hospital don't eat because it looks worse than food given to prisoners. You are mandated to pay N500 per day. So if you are admitted for 2 weeks or 1 month then do the math to know how much bill it is just for food alone and guess what, hospital bill is not expensive but the bill going to private pocket is what is touching. I am confident that government is not aware, it is shady deals that the management is doing. During payment a receipt has been designed to make it look official they call it DIET bills.

The money you'll pay settling this diet bill of a thing is bigger than the hospital bills. I want Edo State Government to stop this heartless people, we should make life easy for one another not difficult because of greedy heartless and corrupt people in government.

When you visit a white man's country, you'll be amazed with what you see because they make life easy but in nigeria the reverse is the case.

If they make feeding free, I can assure u that the hospital will be overwhelmed with 'patients'.
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by iluvnaija: 5:39pm On Mar 17, 2011
Feeding was not the hospital responsibility. Every hospital has canteen and it is optional for patient to go there and eat if they feel like not hospital management mandating you to eat pap and bean cake (akamu & akara) in the morning, rice afternoon and eba evening. And the quantity is very small and you pay heavily for it. Seeing the food alone you are not encouraged to eat it. Even if served freely you will not eat it.

I have read almost all responses and I want to make this clear, that the purpose of this post is not for people to come and start typing rubbish even without reading to comprehend what is being written before comment because I read somebody asking where is Stella Obasanjo Hospital and who asked that question read the topic before coming in to start asking such question when it is clearly stated that it is in Benin City and if you dig deeper into that person's educational background dont be surprise to such person a Phd degree holder because this is nigeria. (No offence) It's absurd. And somebody wrote about giving discount for staying longer "You talk lie" If you like stay 1 year, do the complete math.

Furthermore, this purpose is to make Edo State Government aware of what is going on because I believe they are not part of this. I want to use this medium to appeal to anyone who can notify the governor or whoever can stop this nonsense going on in the hospital.

DONT MAKE OPTIONAL things MANDATORY
I want to tell ya'll what i believe made the management to make such decision.
In 2008 I went to the hospital to see relative with her new born baby, I went to the canteen to eat BEHOLD when they served food, seeing it alone you'll loose appetite. So I have placed an order I felt I should have a taste of it, a spoon full of rice is all I had and I could not even swallow it because it is insipid poor taste and I just paid and left the canteen. I'm thinking because of poor sales because the place was dried no body wen I entered even till I left, that's why they had to mandate it to patient that you must pay for the food.

I have one question to ask. Why is hospital management asking a patient to sign consent before surgical operation is carried out and why are they not forcing patient to pay for their drugs when you don't have enough or no money but you must pay for the food before you leave the hospital even if you tell the management you can not afford to pay for it or else you won't be discharged.
What I want the public to be aware of is that the person managing the hospital and the owner of the canteen, I suspect are the people behind this.

I have visited the hospital for about 4 years now, the way it was then and now there is huge difference. Then, feeding was not mandatory and there was rush but now the reverse is the case. Edo state government spent huge amount of money building the hospital and patients needs to visit the hospital so that money can be raised to properly manage the place instead of scaring patients with mandatory feeding. Even the money for the feeding does not go to the government account but individual. The hospital is very well equipped.

Finally, Let us make this world a better place, we should not let greed make us loose our senses.

GOD HELP US!

This is wrong . . .so very wrong!
Why should a hospital force anyone to pay or buy their food?
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by snowdrops(m): 12:38pm On Mar 18, 2011
no big deal, even UBTH does the same; i stand corrected. health services are already oversubscribed. you dont expect government to pay for everything. their hospitals are way cheaper than what happens in the private sector.

even in a country like UK where you have free healthcare at the point of need, most people pay to park their cars, watch TV, etc.

BTW which is stella Obasanjo hospital? Is it the same as central hospital?
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by ifyalways(f): 12:46pm On Mar 18, 2011
^^Did u get what she was saying undecided
No one is saying they shld not cook or sale their food but why force every and all patient to buy,or pay for the food even If you don't eat or like it ?

Paying to park ur car, watch Tv,laundry etc is very different from forcing someone to pay for food whether s/he likes or eats it.
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by snowdrops(m): 12:58pm On Mar 18, 2011
if Stella obasanjo hospital is the same as central hospital, then it no new practise. you have to remember health is an expensive business. drugs, equipments cost a lot. same applies to salaries that is always going up.

the meal fees i believe is only part of the hospitals internally generated revenue. i do not accept the hospital would feed their patients unclean or poisonous food. remember a good number of the nurses etc would eat from the same food. maybe poster is an aristocrat or may have personal views/rules about meals served in a hospital hence his disposition to the food served

if he is displeased with the ongoing practice, it would be better if he channeled his grievances to the hospital authorities and/or the office of the commissioner of health in edo state.

N500 a day looks on the high side to be fair. i don't think it was this expensive in the past. wont be surprised if the hike happened after oshiomole came into office.
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by smallboy2(m): 1:03pm On Mar 18, 2011
In most government free services, the managers always device means to earn more money to there pockets and call it any name. Too bad for our country that nothing is 100% free. see my signature
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by snowdrops(m): 1:07pm On Mar 18, 2011
i dont think it is anything illegal in the case being discussed. However large scale corruption of other kinds does go on in such public institutions.

IMO,I don't see N500 a day as too much neither am i sooooo bothered abt the quality or quantity of food.
What I believe is wrong is Forcing every patient to buy or pay for the food regardless of how u feel abt the food . . .Haba,It should be Optional . . . .If you want, even if its 1K a plate u get it but forcing you to pay for a food when u probably have other means of feeding urself  . . .is that not extortion  undecided

Would you pay a hospital for TV when you neither sent them to buy one nor went close to the TV-Viewing area ?

Is the hospital a private one?
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by daroz(m): 1:13pm On Mar 18, 2011
You pay N500 a day and expect to eat three correct square meal a day? Na joke u dey.
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by snowdrops(m): 1:16pm On Mar 18, 2011
abi o. N500 is already at a discount. although we have to remember that a good number of the patients are indigents and could hardly afford the said amount excluding hospital fees.
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by otokx(m): 1:19pm On Mar 18, 2011
They should make it optional; poster should write a petition to the Governor and the commissioner of health.
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by snowdrops(m): 1:20pm On Mar 18, 2011
@ ifyalways

look at it this way; most of the people who decline the food and ultimately end up paying would have to be middle class and above. therefore its like a robin hood tax; as most persons at the lower end of society dare not let go of N500 and not eat the food.

remember other services at the hospital is already subsidized, eg registration, consultation fees, etc. common, government no be father Christmas afterall.
Re: My Experience At Stella Obasanjo Hospital, Benin City. by ifyalways(f): 1:30pm On Mar 18, 2011
^ . . .Because as u claimed they have subsidized bla bla they can now force everyone to buy their food?
That your argument is so flawed . . .a poor farmer, market woman has a higher percentage of sourcing for her own food at a cheaper rate and wud definitely have other things to do with her N500.
People have relatives, friends and church members bringing them food for free when they are hospitalized

It must be really sweet paying for a food you did not send anyone to prepare for you . . .In any circumstance.

If the govt. or management wants to raise money for themselves they better use another avenue . . .You pay for bed and pay for food too  shocked Im just seeing people been delayed there in order to increase diet fees . . .ridiculous.

Hospitals have now become hotels . . .Bed and Breakfast(BB)  angry
otokx:

Why make me pay for it. UPTH is also culpable.

Thank you for the bold.

Stella Obasanjo hospital is DEFINITELY NOT Central hospital (Specialist as it is called).
Stella Obasanjo hospital is somewhere around "Country estate" (I sit to be corrected about the estate's name) down the Sapele road/Etete axis and I'm sure it caters mainly for WOMEN and CHILDREN!

You can say no big deal but, how many indegent Nigerians can afford N500*No of days you spend in the hospital. Meanwhile you never tasted the food.

does that mean the children and women sections have been moved from the old specialist site? interesting then.

@  ifyalways

we can continue with this argument till day breaks but after all said and done, health is an expensive business. In the most developed nations of the world, you have to pay through your nose to get even some basic healthcare.

At N500 per day, it remains cheaper than most private hospitals.  If we dig deeper, you will find that, the longer the patient stays on admission, the cheaper he of she pays for food. If someone is admitted for a month, i think how it works out would be eg N300 per day rather than the full amount. The N500 is reserved for short hospital stays. Again i stand corrected.

It is not that simple a mathematics ie, N500 * no. of days. This total amount is only paid on discharge and not a daily levy.

Seriously I do NOT understand you
You are comparing 9ja healthcare;food and all with developed countries? oti ooo.Whats next . . .Naija boarding house food Versus home made dinner.

Whats up with the i think ,i stand to be corrected . . . .argument based on conjectures?
The onus of the matter is that such additional services should be made Optional.QED
It can be N50 or 5K per diem,it matters not as long as its NOT compulsory. The hospital from every indication is NOT a Private one therefore stuffs like feeding should not be a do or die affair.

Btwn,do Private hospitals have such strict meal laws?diet fees?

N500.00 a day is great if the food is so bad nobody will eat it. The hospital charges 500 people and cook enough for 10 people because nobody else will eat the crap they serve. No patient should be forced to eat hospital food. This is another way that organizations in Nigeria (with approval from Nigerians of course) mistreat people. If they want to keep it fair then charge more and make it a cafeteria. If the food is bad then people will not patronize them. If it is good then they will get paid. That is the only thing that is just. Everything else is basically the staus quo. Oppression and in this case the oppressed are probably the most vulnerable people. Wickedness

at least i base my arguements setting practical examples rather than yourself that debates as if this is some fantasy world.

The bottom line is that the hospital for reasons best known to them have set N500 for food. No one is forced to eat the food, but if you are admitted there it is part of the total cost. Thats the beauty of choice here. If you dont like it then move to the nearest private hospital, shikena. Why are you taking panadol for another mans headache.

I would rather a well equipped but somewhat dear hospital that a free but crappy one.

PS; no ones comparing nigeria with whatever country; you attempt to mislead readers here is rather pathetic.

@ snowdrop, your argument is senseless, dnt u understand wot d poster is trying to point out?its not d amount charged 4 d meal bt y they have to make it a do or die thing.y in Gods name will they make it mandatory for patients to buy their food, there are other things they cud make money from,if the hospital is interested in making food for patients it shud b optional.in my family hospital(subol hospital)they have a canteen where u can buy from bt it is optional n not mandatory, the quality of d food is even ok n yet its not compulsory u buy from them.u re free to buy or get ur food anywhere just make sure u take a good food.

pls stop arguing blindly, use ur brain correctly.
