A new bill to increase the retirement age of teachers across the country was on Wednesday approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The bill seeks to increase the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years and also increase the possible years of service from 35 to 40 years.

The bill will now be sent to the parliament for the proper legislative process before it can become law, the education minister, Adamu Adamu, told journalists in Abuja after the FEC meeting.

The ‘Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Bill 2020’ , seeks to give legal backing to new measures by the Muhammadu Buhari administration to enhance teaching in the country.

“This memo that was approved for the Ministry of Education is a giant step towards what we set out to do last year, with the approval of some special packages for teachers by the president. So, at the meeting today, Council approved that a bill which will be called ‘Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Bill 2020’ be sent to the National Assembly for enactment into law so that all the promises made by the president and all the approvals he had given to me will now begin to be put into effect because this is the legal backing that is required for it,” Mr Adamu said.

“The essence of the bill actually is to give legal backing for the approval of a new retirement age of 65 for teachers and then the service period being extended to 40 years.”

Apart from increasing the retirement age and years of service, the bill also seeks to introduce bursary award, special rural posting allowances and other items that will encourage brilliant Nigerians to take to teaching.

“The intention is to attract the best brains to the teaching profession and for that, the president approved the reintroduction of bursary awards, improving teacher quality, funding teaching practice form TETFUND, enhanced entry point for teachers. The president also approved that there should be some special allowances, like rural posting allowance and science teachers’ allowance,” the minister said.

Country is broke.

No longer has money to pay the retirement benefit so you government servants are expected to wait 5 more years before retirement and possibly most of you will die before then, so government does not have to pay the servant anything except there is court action after death.

What does it mean for the citizens if the country is broke?

Ha Ha.

Get your NIN, it could become the next Central Bank account number in your name grin

40years in service is too long.

I wouldn't want to retire from a Teaching Job at 65years old. No Way! I reject it in Jesus Name!

They should reduce the years of service to 50years...
Give them their entitlement benefits, they will still be resourceful at that age to venture into other business, and that will open door for new people to come into the system and reduce unemployment rate..

Nothing stops voluntary retirement. Most civil servants love the extension, ASUU recently ensured government extended the retirement age of lecturers from 65years to 70 years.

teachers don't have to retire, except they're tired. They should've employed more teachers instead.

Reserve your stupid advise till you attain your fictitious Biafra. A bill to improve teachers and teaching job which previous administrations did not attend to is given you headache, what then will give you joy till the end of this administration?. Nothing, your bitterness continue till 2023 and beyond since your Biafra will continue to be elusive.

Countries with good retirement benefits want to retire early.

Only places like naija want to die in office due to the fear of the unknown

In my opinion, the Govt should have increase their welfare and retirement age set at 50 years. So They will still have the energy to in other businesses with money earned while in service. Rather than paying them pea nut; not even on regular bases.
Re: FEC Approves Bill To Increase Retirement Age And Years Of Service For Teachers by bibelo: 6:05am On Jan 21, 2021
This is a very bad move, at the age of 60 most people are usually battling one ailment or the other thus low productivity. secondly with a high level of unemployment, increasing the length of service will only increase unemployment figures.
Government should rather have rather put an improved welfare package in place and reduce the time benefits payment to not more than 6months after retirement.....

Are you a teacher?
Do you know the stress teachers go through every day?
How many people can withstand such stress at old age?
In fact what is the life expectancy in Nigeria?
Around 30's - 40's if you don't know.
It takes the grace of God for an average Nigerian to live beyond 40.
I know that you are not a teacher. This is wickedness against teaching profession.

You would agree with me that teaching in the 21st Century needs vibrant and energy youths for sustenance not the tired or the weak ones.
Teaching is not politics.
Teaching is not APC/PDP that refuses to give youth the way in.

Long awaited.
considering teachers gain more experience as time goes by.
Once a teacher is always a teacher
A good teacher will be ready to teach irrespective of age and not necessarily because of the remuneration but because of the joy derived from impacting in others.

God bless all our teachers, you made us who we are today; without you the world wouldn't have been a better place.

undecided

Most of those commenting up there are talking out of ignorance.

This is a very very good news for the teachers.

Between 55 to 60 years, most of the teachers are already Head Masters or Principals with salaries around 200k. This is the period they enjoy the teaching profession, most of them build houses and buy cars this period as a reward for their long years of hardwork and meagre salaries.

At this period also, there is less work for them, they don't teach in class again instead they are saddled with managerial duties and day to day running of the school.
An increase in 5 years would mean more promotions and higher salaries for them.

An average teacher is scared of retirement, after decades of monthly salaries, some can't imagine going to queue for pensions to survive.

Thank God for extra contributory pensions like IBTC pension and the rest.

I hope the senate quickly pass this, as some are on the verge of retiring and are really banking on its passage.
