To many Blacks outside of Africa, being called an African is an insult? who is to blame the media or the elders? Why is everything of disgust associated with Africa?

Do you really see it like that? I have never seen it as people being insulted or offended for being called an African. People have pride in who they are and where they come from. They all have their own distinctive cultures and like to be identified as such. I can't speak for everyone but thats just how I see it.

I agree with you, as an afro-trini i have no problem with being called african as in my ethnicity. However i am really proud to be a trini so if someone thinks that i'm from Africa i will simply correct them and let them know that 'african is my ethnicity but trini thats my nationality'. It has nothing to do with being insulted, ashamed or whatever.

Caribchic, I have a friend who is an Afro-Trinidadian woman. Just like you, she refers to her ethnicity as African, especially in the context of distinguishing from Trinidadians of Indian descent.

For many blacks in America we were basically given the impression of a Africa that is primitive and cannibalistic that was uncvilized. So growing up in a western culture being directly and indirectly conditioned. Anything of africa was something to be ashamed about. This is why you will hear the term nappy be used in a negative conotation.

It depends actually but I have noticed what you said especially with african americans and Black latino's however I have seen some who are proud to be called african but I have to be perfectly honest besides their ethnicity historically they are not culturally African any more, they have their own cultures; Caribbean Black's have their own culture, Black Latino's have their own culture and the same with Black americans, their so far removed from Africa now. Almost all don't know their tribe of country they are from in Africa, all they know is that their ancestors are from the continent of Africa and that's where it ends. I have witnessed many Black americans refuse to be called African because of the reason I just stated above, even disgraced presidential candidate Hermain Cain refuse to call himself African. The reasons behind it can be both their elders and Media from my experience.

Besides that why should Africans really be concerned about this, they have nothing to lose either way. If this were people born in the western world from african parents then I would understand your concern but with Black diasporians, well they have the right not to be called african because culturally they are not any more and africans shouldn't even be surprised by this any way.

Once you are black, you are African. Period. Yeah I have had issues with the subject in the past but at the end of the day that statement is real. Whether or not someone likes it wants to admit it, its true. Whether or not you can identify a "tribe" means nothing. Nor does language or "culture" as there is no such thing as a "unified african culture".

I’m an AA however; I’m not mixed breed but I am proud of my black heritage.

There’s always a discussion as to why AA’s are on this board.

Many of your men are migrating from Nigeria to America, sending money (back home) to help the poor as you so stated. Marring our women just to receive papers to stay in the country and someday bring you here. Your men, who come to this country, lie and cheat their way into this modern society and, system but yet you have nerve to demean us. You benefit from what he sends home in one way or another. It is only fair that AA’s learn as much as we can in any way we can about your culture and traditions. I can’t speak for the other AA’s on this board, but I have learned a lot just reading the post. I see some of you think you are the greatest gift that God has created. We were all created in his image. In lieu of allowing yourself to be better, maybe you need to lift 1 another up no matter where we are from.

This has got to be the biggest case of the pot calling the kettle black I have ever seen in my entire life, especically considering African men worldwide are pound for pound considered the most barbaric, deranged, child-r&pe-happy, apes to ever walk this earth. Why do you think it's so hard to get your visas approved to enter the civilized world?
