I am bit confused here, are u suggesting that with a budget of 500k (land and housing exclusive) one should stock 100-150 layers or what ? That makes it a bit scary cos I intend starting with a minimum of 500-700 layers exclusive of land , as I need to build the house myself, what budget will be enuf for my proposed investment.

thank u for all d openness and support

For 500 layers, you will need almost 1million naira before you can start retrieving your investment. You will need to do the following (Vaccination, feeding, lighting, security, labour, wood shaving) for 4-5 months before they start laying egg.

A LITTLE BREAKDOWN IS AS FOLLOWS, THIS IS A GUIDE.
My broilers ate an average of 8kg to 13weeks maturity, ordinarily layers might not eat that much, so let’s assume the layers eats 14kg to 20weeks maturity (it is better to plan with 20wks instead of 16wks)

(1) Feeding
Let's assume a bag of grower mash/layers mash is N2, 000
That means a bird will consume N80 x 14kg = N1, 120
For 500 birds = 500 x N1, 120 = N560, 000

(2) Vaccination for 5 months = N50,000
(3) Labour for 5 months at 20k per month = N100,000
(4) Lighting, security, wood shaving = N75,000
(5) Miscellaneous = N100,000
(6) Price Variation or unaccounted details = N100,000

NB: This is based on my experience from broiler farming; someone that is into laying birds might give you a more detailed info.

The anticipated 500pullets came in last Thursday at about 10pm in the night and they immediately were given IO.

The brooding house had ling been prepared for the landing of the eagles. Pl have a view of some of their pictures.

I hope you can see the broilers I mentioned earlier there, we have so far lost about 1dozen and still trying very hard to curb their losses. We have about 490 left as we got extras.

The broilers are already having more weight than the layers, cos those guys eat like gluttons!

Anyway we will be buying Oba-Marshal Broilers for December sales. Will keep you posted on that.

9th of which month actually?
if this broilers are close to 10wks, then, they need to be fed well.
the broiler i raised last, at 12wks, they're more than 2KG
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by niapay(m): 12:03pm On Sep 05, 2011
broiler are raised to from 28 days to 42 days if the target weight is 1.1kg-2.8kg, for manual operation like the one in this tread, its not advisable to raise the broiler for higher than 42 days which is a target weight of 2.4kg-2.9kg, if you can not achieve this target weight in that duration then there is something wrong with your management style and you need to consult your broiler breed management guide. simple its not advisable for none automated climate control house to grow broiler for higher than 42 days
