Facebook has added another dimension to its march towards total domination of the social networking space and to the concept of 'Open Source' - it has just shared details of its server and datacentre designs, just like it did with its software code, and just like Yahoo did with it's data centre design a while ago. It released many details, down to processing power, output consumption and actual data centre design model. I think the key here is to note that Facebook appears determined to encourage the adoption of web-scale computing by all. On the surface it would appear that Facebook might be feeding the 'competition' with 'ammo' - but methinks it simply speaks of just how confident the compay is of it's domination of the industry. Read more on this here - including some of the details the commpany shared: it makes pretty interesting reading, if this is your sort of stuff: http://gigaom.com/cloud/facebook-open-sources-its-servers-and-data-centers/ Also see 'Why Facebook open-sourced its datacenters' at: http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2011/04/why-facebook-open-sourced-its-datacenters.ars Find Facebook's actual site on its Open Computing project here: http://opencompute.org/ |
