News that a British court had convicted Terry Waya of money laundering—and will be sentenced in August. is indeed refreshing. Waya is a troubling creature, epitomizing the plague of sudden, inexplicable wealth. A loud, exceptionable braggart, Waya is, in the Nigerian lingo, loaded. Combining self-inflation and social gracelessness in equal measure, he’s given to the most obscene mode of self-advertisement. A few years ago, he boasted to a Nigerian publication that he only drinks bottled water from Paris! This, from a man whose source of wealth and means of livelihood remain a mystery. Waya is one of the few 419ners from the North of the country.

A London court on Tuesday found a Nigerian socialite, Mr. Terry Waya, guilty of money laundering.

Although the amount involved was unknown as at 10pm on Tuesday, a source said it might be part of the £630,000 being investigated by the British Police.

He will be sentenced on August 7.Apart from the sentence, his assets will be confisticated.

The details of the judgment of the court were still being awaited as at press time on Tuesday.

Waya had in 2005 been arrested by the British Police for alleged money laundering.

About £630,000 was found in his account in 2005 by the Metropolitan Police. He was later released.

A spokesman for the Met Police, Paul Dew, had on November 24, 2005 confirmed the arrest of Waya in a response to an e-mail from THE PUNCH.

He said he (Waya) had been bailed to return in June 2006.

In the last one year, the Nigerian socialite had been undergoing trial.

Waya had in October 2005 at Bow Street Magistrate’s Court in London offered to be one of the three sureties for a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

Although he made a £500,000 bail bond available, his surety application went awry.

It was learnt that there was a disagreement between Waya and the former governor over the bail process.

Despite the controversy, Waya issued a statement that he could not abandon a friend in need.

It was gathered that the role of the businessman in the bail saga led to a search on his business activities in London.

It seems likely they did. It is called British justice. By telling you that he dressed like a woman and flee britain through heathrow makes their airport and borders very vulnerable. It can never be true.

Who has asked for photographic evidence concerning Alams' escape? Alams just might have been wearing hijab as well afterall what other kind of female clothing will fit him.
Point of correction though, the one who escaped to Italy did not wear a hijab. It was the one who fled to Birmingham by coach from Golders green coach stationwho wore a hijab.

And no he did not leave thru Heathrow but neither did he go by road. He went by Eurostar which is not much different from using an airport.

If he didn't jump bail why was his asset confiscated in London? why was his money returned to Nigerian government? on what premise will London want to let him out. he was decline visa to London for treatment because he is a criminal.
Re: Terry Waya To Be Sentenced Soon by denex: 3:13pm On Jul 17, 2007
This Alams escape from London is just the same as the Taylor escape from Calabar.

if the british govt did not let him go the kidnappers in ND will not demand for ransom, they kill any british citizen in ND at first sight. They value a british head more than the entire population of nigeria. They new what could have been the outcome in ND. Which of his property was confiscated and how much was given back to Kolade here in London.

If that was the case, they would have pulled out their troops from Iraq to stop the terrorist attacks.
