If a shop gets a hundred Hausa people buying 20 of those shirts each visit, then they are going to notice them and that is buying power.

Then, at least, 2,000 Hausas must visit per week to warrant a campaign

BIGER BOY:

its sad shouldnt we be glad that we have one our languages up there, would u guys rather have the ghanian or zulu language upthere jus because its HAUSA.

I remember this display of ignorance when the 'ARABIC' latters were expunged from the naira that was too bad cos of the following

1. the english french spanish etc. languages might use a seemingly similar characters but each writing has its unique letters (u will agree)

2. The japanese chinese koreans also write seemingly similar, but trust me each of these writings are worlds apart in style and characters

3. Arabic Persian Hausa also share the same similitude but there are letters in the Hausa language not found in both arabic and persian

Bottom line we should be proud that even b4 the europeans our fellow African and consequently Hausa's have adapted and develpd a writing style comparable with any major languages then, yet maintaining writing styles and character unique only to the Hausa languge.

shouldnt this acheivement be celebrated rather than the usual colonial line of 'the africans had notting b4 the europeans'. How many of u know that there was a University in Africa b4 the europeans- in TIMBUKTU, MALI, and also the largest mud stucture ever biult.

common guys will we ever develop with this ethnic bigotry and hatred. THINK.
Not about hatred, Mr man. Just about Hausa shoppers and how much they spend in London. Whether they spend more than Yorubas, for example.

You are right. But, those Mallams don't go to Debenhams. You will notice that they shop at Harrods.

From some comments are i cn sense marginlisation and  tribalism which should  not be, cmmon nt all these hausa ppl are uneducated, nt all of them are exremist, most of  them are educated, most of them school here, so whts all the hype over an hausa language  being used as business, Nigerians at time we are the architect of our own downfall, we read meaning to every single thing.

latch:

Why are you guys jumping up and down over this? of course there aren't that many Hausa/fulanis in the UK, but generally speaking the few here spend a lot more than you can imagine.

You really don't see them around cos you really don't hang in the same places. When I was at Uni here, I knew bunches of Hausa students that take random trips to the Caribbean or Hong Kong etc, every so often out of boredom (source: went with them once, and we took 8 suites at a £400 a night hotel ,  on their bill).
(of course most of the ones here always seem to be related to some government or ex-government big wig)

anyway,
You don't see then on buses, cos they almost all drive or hire cabs
You don't see them where you live in North, south or east London, cos many of them live in luxury apartments in Central London
you don't see them in clubs and bars, cos they don't really like drinking in public, but trust me, they spend quite a bunch doing small extravagant parties in some unbelievably luxury apartments.
Finally, you don't see them in regular London University (middlesex, southbank, thames valley, London met etc) campuses cos most of them go to the better schools, of which most are outside London.

,  just thought to say

,  and yeah, while debenhams, is not the cream of luxury shopping, I'll pretty sure if data from Harrods or Harvey Niclols is checked, they'll still be the highest spenders

Sorry! But, some of you guys are simply SILLY.

Why are you in here to celebrate corruption? They stole your money YET you are hailing them. Are some of you this DUMB? They are leaders . . . they are govt guys . . . blah blah blah.

You all know it is your money YET you are beating your chest about their WAR CHEST.

I really pity Nigeria.

SO DUMB! shocked shocked

Get a life!

No need to get excited, we're talking about 0.00000001% of the Hausa population, who also see other Hausa as Bananas.
You dey mind the monkey. The fact that a small number of his people have joined hands with other bastards from other ethnic groups to bleed the nation does not mean the whole Hausa population are living better lives. As a matter of fact, we all know they have the highest poverty rate in the country. So who is the monkey and who is the banana?

For those who don't know, The Brits are more receptive and accommodating to the Northerners. Due to the fact that the Northerners gladly accepted the imposed lordship of the British colonial masters ba.stards on them, without as much as a question, let alone a fight.

This is not something new, as far back as World War II, the Japanese Army was reported to be broadcasting through loudspeakers in Hausa, to dissuade Africans from fighting for the British in Burma.

By the way, why should the language used by a private company in England be a source of argument here? It is not every topic that is posted on front page that must descend into an argument.

Most Hausa people do not speak English and most southerners do
The majority of Nigerians in England are Yoruba, followed by Igbo people. Debenhams knows that southern Nigerians speak English so they had to cater for hausa people who do not; this is similar to BBC which had a BBC Hausa service before the recession.  wink wink The former colonial masters know what they left behind and now they are enjoying the spending spree of rich Nigerian tourists grin grin grin grin
