Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, on Tuesday stormed the Governor’s Office, Agodi, Ibadan to protest the hike in their school fees by the immediate past administration in the state.

The students, in their hundreds, attempted to force their ways into the premises, compelling security operatives to quickly shut the main gate leading into the secretariat.

Their action caused a serious traffic gridlock on the major road in front of the secretariat and other adjoining roads.

It took the intervention of armed policemen drafted to the scene, who fired some canisters of teargas to disperse the students.

One of the protesting students, who did not want his name in print, had earlier told journalists that their intention was to seek the governor’s intervention in reducing their tuition fees.

He said the last administration had raised the tuition fee of HND II students to about N100,000 while HND I students were asked to pay N84,000, adding that the accommodation fee was put at N17, 500 despite the fact that the school rarely had electricity.

He said, “There are no facilities in the hostels, yet the management is forcing us to pay. This is unacceptable to us. We have paid 60 per cent of the fees and they are compelling us to balance up within a week.

“We cannot agree with this. Governor Ajimobi had before his inauguration promised to reduce the fees by 50 per cent. We have paid even more than half of the fees and so we are calling on the governor to address the situation.”

In reaction, authorities of the polytechnic ordered its immediate closure.

Nonsense! What r they protesting about? Some of those students use blackberry and iphones which cost about almost the price of the school fees so wtf? Most people dont value education these day so i believe when they pay a high price for their education, they will value it.

Unconfirmed report had it that about four of the protesting students were arrested. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adisa Bolanta, told our correspondent on the telephone at about 3pm that he had not been briefed on any arrest.

The students’ action came at a time the newly-inaugurated Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, was attending an inter-faith prayer session at the Governor’s Office as part of activities for his inauguration.

At 12 noon, the traffic situation on the Bodija-Secretariat Road was still hectic.

About five police patrol vans were stationed in front of the secretariat while stern-looking, armed policemen and some officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were stationed under the bridge at the entrance of the secretariat.

According to a statement by the Registrar, Mr. Tosho Ayanwale, the school would remain closed down until further notice.

He attributed the closure to what he called the lawless attitude of the students, who invaded the office of the governor.

The statement read, “The management has consequently directed all the students of the institution including those in Saki and Eruwa campuses to proceed to their various homes until further notice.

Thought the bolded had been redeployed during the last general election to delta state, bty, why did the students wait till Akala left office to protest

Eh. . . while I'm a fan of free primary and secondary school, I don't think the state's obligation to its citizens includes free or massively subsidized college/university.

Hrm, we'll see how Ajimobi resolves this

This is the most stupid protest I've seen in a while, couldn't they have calculated that the timing was not appropriate. How could sane people have protested on a newly elected Governor's 1st day in office. Please, they should handle this in a reasonable manner not in a wild psychedelic manner.

Regards.

are you answering those silly students, they decided to protest on the very first day the governor resumed office, the least they could have done was to go

welcome him in to office and then remind him of his promises to reduce ther school fees, instead the mugunus decided to protest like hooligans, when i saw it

on the news i was so upset, and the money thyr talkin about is about 22k for hnd and 16k for nd students,na im come dey cause all these wahala

they should convert The polytechnic Ibadan to a University. People who graduate from there, have problem abroad. Convert all Polytechnics in Yorubaland into Universities.

Sorry, but I beg to differ!, I am a product of HND Computer Science, The Polytechnic Ibadan, and I am happy to tell you that I am currently based in Australia and employed in my chosen career (now a Senior Data Analyst). I got a job with 1 month of landing here with my HND certificate, and my first and current apointments are both in the Aussie government sector.

I know a lot of Poly Ibadan products that are doing really well abroad!
Re: Students Storm Oyo Gov’s Office Over Hike In Fees by ektbear: 3:31am On Jun 02, 2011
^-- Interesting. That is good to hear.

I never really thought it made sense to have all universities either. There should be different options for people post-secondary school. University for all sounds a bit cookie cutter.
Re: Students Storm Oyo Gov’s Office Over Hike In Fees by anishe(m): 8:19am On Jun 02, 2011
I strongly believe that the students ought to have given the new governor a bit of time to settle into office. Anyway, they have the right to protest.
The new Governor, this may be the first ltmus test for your administration. Pleas handle with care. Best of Luck to you all.

Re: Students Storm Oyo Gov’s Office Over Hike In Fees by Anvaller: 1:24pm On Jun 02, 2011
I would advise people to always learn more about an issue before jumping to conclusions. This is how it happened
1)Akala raised their fees sometimes ago, the students protested and he (Akala) said it was inevitable. (So the students were unhappy).

2)The Academic and Non Academic staff of Polytechnic applauded Akala for raising the fee because the institution would earn more and so there long overdue increase in salary can be implemented and there would be funds to do other things. (So the staffs were happy)

That was the standing of things till Ajimobi came in

3) Ajimobi promised the students that he will announce a reduction of their tuition fee by 50% during his inauguration if he was voted in and so (Poly Student worked en masse for the election of Ajimobi). He said Akala
had no reason to raise their fees in the 1st place that he was just a thief who was looking for an avenue to steal more money. (So the student became happy again)

4) The staff of Ibadan poly out of fear that Ajimobi might make good his promise ordered the student to pay a total amount of their tuition and gave them a one week ultimatum or else those who did not pay would cease to be bonafide students forthwith.
The student were not baffled with the school's managements ultimatum because they thought it would be of no effect since Ajimobi would announce a reduction at his inauguration.

5) At the inauguration against his promise, Ajimobi did not announce a reduction and the ultimatum was running, therefore they thought that there was a problem that needs urgent interference, hence they headed to Ajimobi for a rescue, more so, he was the one who promised them.

6) The population of the protesting students was overwhelming and of course the overzealous security personnels who have just been detailed to protect a new governor would want to due their jobs very well. As a result, they beat the guys and stripped the ladies naked.

Conclusion: The students might not be totally right but I think that they should not be called idiots and morons because their action was consequent upon a development that was building up.
Lastly, lets ask ourselves, why hasn't Ajimobi made any comment to this development?
He understands the reason why the student did what they did more than ordinary people who doesnt know what has transpired does, so he needs sometime to really think what next he would say to these students.

that still doesn't explain their behavior, for God's sake they're supposed to be learned human beings, why would you go on a rampage on the very first day of the

governor's tenure,is he a magician? Will he just say abracadabra and their fees would be reduced. They should have given him time, at least a month, before

determining that there might be a problem. Is it not during Akala's regime that the money was increased, why didn't they go on rampage then, i just feel the whole

thing was politically motivated. i live here in ibadan and i know what is going on,just two days to may29, Akala suddenly decided to give the motor parks back to

Tokyo, and now we have clashes and people losing their lives daily, just because the road transport people refuse to have Tokyo as their chairman. Then the poly

students suddenly take it in to their heads to rampage, its very glaring, some people are trying to create trouble and confusion in oyo state

@tsjkii, I have said all I wanna say about poly student issue, but hey! you mention the tokyo issue? well u may be living in Ibadan but obviously u lack knowledge of the issue you have raised. I wonder what is going on here? why are you getting a scenario that unfolded not long ago completely wrong?

Okay let me explain to you

1) Akala suppressed tokyo by removing him as NURTW after discovering that he apparently was working for ACN. he then enthroned Eleweomo who was loyal to him.

2) ACN criticised Akala brutally and constantly for removing tokyo and asked him to reverse the decision and maintain the status quo. Akala said he was the governor of the state and therefore ACN had no business in trying to share governance and decision making with him

3) ACN and tokyo headed to the court, Tokyo won and Akala refused to respect court order because doing so (reinstating tokyo) will amount to surrendering his arsenal to ACN against whom he would contest in the election that was impending.

4) To that development, Tokyo resolved to taking over the leadership of NURTW by force since the court has cleared him hence the reason for frequent clash between both factions towards the elections

5)ACN continued to press and capitalised on that for criticisms against Akala,

6) People hated Akala for he seemed apparently causing troubles and unrest in the state

7) Akala lost the election and knowing fully well that Ajimobi will of course remove the restrictions on Tokyo immediately he became governor, he Akala decided to order same before leaving office, a tactical way of stealing the glory of such decision from Ajimobi

cool Consequent upon Akala's order, the formally Eleweomo now Auxillary's faction refused still to vacate the leadership mantle in the parks and in the NURTW's usual manner, they resorted to violence again.

Conclusion: I dont know how old u were in the 90s and in the early 2000s, you should know that NURTW in Ibadan has never settled any score without violence and unfortunately such violence have always been having political undertones. So for u to think that Akala has forced a Tokyo the people dont want shows ur total misunderstanding of the issue u delved into, what Akala has been blamed for for a long time was removal of tokyo and support for Elewomo, so if u are now saying that he has reinstated a tokyo that people do not want, infact, then it must be that the issue is too complex for u to understand.
Okay ask yourself, has Ajimobi condemned Tokyo for those violent clashes apart from the CP's comments?
Dont u imagine how much noise ACN would have made in this case if it was the time when they were still seeking for peoples support and votes?
Finally, i dont live in Ibadan, infact not even in Nigeria but I am an Ibadan guy and I am dissappointed that I am explaining all these things to you.

tjski, Im sorry Anvaller finished you, he was more reasonable wuth his Opinion, Besides, he took you to school!, In my own opinion, because you probably attended a University doesnt mean you should talk to polyts with such disrespect and despise!, If 19k no be money to you, then you must be a thief or an Aristo, I think people get it all wrong when they begin to fight for Ajimobi or Fashola or whosoever, They are on their job and u are just a spectator, so it is not always worth it to judge, it is firstly expected of you to watch,, It is true Ajimobi promised poly students that if they vote for him, he wld slash the fees by half on his inauguration day, Commonsensically. i knew that would not be possible, but it doesnt give us the audacity to say such disrespectful statements to the struggling poly students, This is politics, If Akala increased the fees, and u feel its not right, then we should blame him for it, If Ajimobi makes a promise that he didnt fulfill , theres no need for self pity,we should blame him too, !

Where did u hear that piece from?

Akala openly PROSCRIBED NURTW in Oyo State, something being strongly considered by Ajimobi as a result of yesterday's (Sunday) violence that claimed the lives of 20 human beings.
