I think the correct way to say this is 'Why Gamers in Nigeria Don't Play Online Games'. See what I did there?  smiley
There are Nigerians in other countries that play online games alot. It is just in Nigeria where this peculiar trend is observed and lies mostly with the second point Dolemite listed; internet speed issues. Our so called broadband isn't broad enough to support online gaming. I tried to hook my PS3 up with PSN and was frustrated out because of lag problems.

D main problem wit online games in naija is d connection. U nid a broadband connection 4 online multiplayer(that's what it says on d box) but starcomms has become unusually fast nowadays and I decided to give it a try. It actually worked and I've been playin socom online for the past 3 months though it lags sometimes and u see things like tanks dissapearing but in the evenings it's usually smooth. I've used swift b4 and its blazingly fast and very stable. The only thing is d price. My advice- get starcomms izap its d fastest dial up available rite now 4get all doze mtn/glo 3g nonsense.and if ure willing o spend 45k or so on online gaming alone den u can subscribe to swift. If u still play socom(on ps2) u van add me tobeski

Internet.
When MTN charges $475 | N63500 for 1mb/s per month what do you expect? They keep bribing the NCC to keep their mouth shut and place no sanctions on them.

Dude that's totally untrue, where did you get that? All the GSM providers have less than stellar bandwidth services not just MTN.

MTN places stellar charges on silly bandwidth/data.

If this was in a reasonable country, sanctions would have been placed a long time ago. Crap.

Exactly. . . Even to download updates, you have to say a little prayer. With PHCN messing up all the time and with all the ridiculously expensive but ineffective broadband plans available in the market. It's going to be a long time before the peeps in 9ja can start enjoying online game play.

As far as internet connection goes, it sucks but the new 4G is helpin matters a bit. But has anyone considered the fact that to sign up for PlayStation network, Nigeria is not listed? so you have to either Google a fake address in any of the listed countries or use a relative or friend's address to sign up? this makes the whole gaming experience less fun cos you're using a fake identity. Some games that have location detectors will tell you that the game is not available for your region if your I.P. registers nigeria while your address is, say U.S. It's sad.

I'd say that its because we have not developed our own local data nets. American gamers for example play amongst themselves because their local infrastructure has all the features to do it whereas we over here have to connect through the SAT cables or worse via satellite link to servers that are behind many nodes which are bound to introduce lots of lag. Gamers in Lagos may have reprieve in that the SAT cables dock over there so ISPs can give some solid broadband solutions but what about places like Kano, Jos, Abuja? A solution would be if some of these international IT based companies (Google, EA for example) began to host content on our local data nets we just might break some of these online jinxes that are plaguing us.

Re: Why Most Nigerians Don't Play Online Games? by Nobody: 3:15pm On Aug 17, 2011
ISPs in Nigeria are thieves. Whats all this nonsense with download limit
charging 100USD per month for just internet wey be like pure water for abroad.

Electricity problems too. PHCN another organization frustrating her citizens.

With all this crisis, how many ppl will be able to afford it talkless of playing games online when games centers yapa lol

I actually play the following games online on a very regular basis, fifa 2011, Need for speed undercover, Burnout Paradise and MW2. I use swift and also have an inverter. I play using a PS3 slim and my tv is an LED, this implies that their is less power consumption when i am using my 3kva inverter so i get to play for hours.

for now, swift seems to be the right isp to use if u want a good connection.

THE OPENING POSTER IS ASKING A DUMB QUESTION, WHY DO WE NOT PLAY
ONLINE GAMES IN NIGERIA

THE QUESTION SHOULD BE WHY IS THEIR NOT CONSTANT ELECTRICITY IN NIGERIA!!!
Re: Why Most Nigerians Don't Play Online Games? by Nobody: 4:04pm On Aug 17, 2011
one more

most of our games are pirated - you can get away with playing pirated games on a pc, but on the net its a different story
