ABUJA-The federal government has
announced plans to establish 100 schools
annually for Almajiris in the country for the
next four years, beginning this year.
Vice President Namadi Sambo made the
disclosure yesterday when he declared
open a meeting of the National Executive
Council of Nigerian Supreme Council for
Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, at the National
Mosque, Abuja.
Sambo stated that government had
concretized plans to build schools that will
address the almajiri menace as well as give
the children western education, adding that
this is “a deliberate programme to take off
from the streets the 9.6 million army of
almajiris roaming our streets. ”
He also said “government will not rest on
its oars in ensuring that it delivered on its
promises of a transformed Nigeria, noting
that President Goodluck Jonathan had aptly
cautioned that “this is no time for
lamentation but a time for transformation.”
He re-emphasized that the administration
will deliver on infrastructure, education,
health and other necessary facilities which
were promised during campaigns.
Sambo, who urged the Supreme Islamic
Council to regulate the activities of zealots
causing disaffection in the society.

Establish schools to curb the Almajiri problem? Questions

a) What sort of schools are we referring to here?

b) What about the existing schools/institutions that have instead been allowed to decay up to this point due? Are those schools not sufficient,if education is really the objective?

c) Does establishing schools in this case imply the Government intends to build new schools in the North or what? Was there a lack to begin with?

the schools are there but the funny thing is that those Almajiris dont believe in Western Civilization & Education. They need more of Islamic Education. I wonder why the FG can think up this thing

I have schooled in the north.

The Almajiris do not have the opportunity, not that they do not believe in western education.  Almajiris are street children.  They require food to stay alive, so they go begging. Anyone that can give them food, controls them.

The Elites, rather than support them to go to school, would rather the Almajiri's come and sit in front of their house and be shouting rankadede, while they send their own children to study abroad.

Yeah, a good step but more is still needed in human resource development for these young people.

I wonder why government has to wait until an issue turn to a menace before they think of taking proactive measures. If that's what their policies are based on, then, they should be expecting more bomb blasts in the future.

Building schs will not solve anything, What happens to the old 1s we have. It seems like violence is the only way to get to the ears of the FG.

I made these two comments yesterday after the Boko Haram bombing and little did I know that the gobberment of looters had already caved in to the pressure.   Looks like if you want something from the government you have to force them to do it, otherwise you don't get jack.

1.  No, no, no.  The genie has already been let out of the bottle and the corrupt and inefficient police in Nigeria cannot control the situation.  Instead of investing in CCTV cameras, inflating the contract and pocketing the difference, maybe our leaders should begin a mass literacy and jobs creation programme in the North.  Believe me, it would be more cost effective in addressing the problem, than deploying more bribe taking policemen or 10 million CCTV cameras, that would not function without electricity.

2.  Indeed, and that is why it's so sad, because groups like Boko Haram, and MEND are fighting for their own vested interests and agenda,  and not the interests of the disenfranchised poor in Nigeria. The fact of the matter is that corrupt leaders and officials are usually cowards who don't want to die so that they can enjoy their ill gotten gains.  That is why they prefer to negotiate and offer amnesty to those who threaten them.   The only way they can be compelled to do the right thing for the masses is for their cosy existence to be threatened by force, because that is the only language they understand.  Do you think the government would have offered any amnesty to MEND or Boko Haram, if they were just carrying placards?   The problem with the vagabonds in power (V.I.Ps) in Nigeria is that they steal everything and leave nothing behind for the poor.   If you do that for too long, you get paid back.  Big time.

True talk.

I have stayed in north, the major problem of the almajiri is food, food, food. FG should partner with the north state govt. and introduced feeding in northern school. I tell you all the almajiris and their parents 'll be in school.

So, we now reward citizens for doing wrong? If its not amnesty packages, its schools? So what does the ordinary Nigerian get then, for just being a law abiding citizen?

These new "factions" in Nigeria need to be showed and taught that they are just the same as everyone else, otherwise they will set a precedent that in order to get what you want from the government you have to begin to pose a danger.

After their "education", are they going to turn back to mischief when they are faced with the situation of all other Nigerians of the frustration of unemployment? Do the Nigerian government actually understand that the Imams etc will still be able to control these people because Mutallab was very much educated and also came from a rich family.


The government need to look at the issues within the education and employment sectors for ALL young Nigerians, not just the North. They need to look at ways to foster a national identity among Nigeria's youth, because with all the education all the southerners have had, they still see eachother and northerners with a measure of distrust and dislike and sometimes even hate.

The government could think of creating more industries as a start, not just in the north, but the entire nation, taking cue from Enugu State and their Nigeria made buses, while also supporting the present ones with favourable policies.


Then set up apprenticeships, for not just the almajiris but also the unemployed youths as is currently done in the western world. That way, they are taught trades which they could use to earn a living and would provide labour for the Industries created above. Thinking of developing our current Institutions is a whole other topic, but should also be part of the national policy.


Manufacturing is the backbone of any industrialized nation, usually making up 20 to 30 percent of all economic activity. Until we have a Government that looks at the bigger picture, knowing Oil will not last forever – we will keep on doing it wrong.

at any rate does this guy know how many teachers it takes to staff 400 schools?
or does he plan to will them into existence.

even if you have a phd it is not easy to walk into a classroom tomorrow and start teaching primary school kids never mind almajiri.
on the other hand they can use corpers. so when they want to slaughter them they save time searching for them.

Equity?  Last time I checked, Bini girls have not started throwing bombs.

What are the governors of northern states doing about them?

Are the religious leaders going to accept any responsibility at all?

If their are to be 400 schools built in the north then it should be paid for out of their state budgets because they should have been building schools all this while, just like the gov of PH is doing. I find it quite distastful that just a few months after the slaughter of youth corpers in the north and the bombings of not only the army barracks but now police headquarters, that the government should reward the region. Even though there is nothing to suggest it is Almajiris who are involved, but for me its too close for comfort.

They are Nigerian children just like those who have to hustle in the traffic at the expense of their education down south.

Total nonsense, how can FG use South South funds to send terrorists to school? I'm beginning to think these men (president and his vice) are a menace to this country.
