ENUGU – TRAGEDY struck in Enugu State, Monday afternoon, as a fatal auto accident involving two commuter buses killed 28 passengers and the drivers.

Among the deceased were four discharged members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, who were returning to their homes after the national service.

Two persons who were seriously injured and went into coma were rescued by officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, who rushed them to a hospital at Ninth Mile.

The buses involved in the accident at Egede village, on Ninth Mile -Nsukka Highway, are a commuter bus belonging to Peace Mass Transit with registration number BENUE XB 504 TKP and another bus owned by the Enugu State Transport Company, ENTRACO, with registration number, ENUGU – XL 812 UWN, each conveying 15 passengers.

The driver of the Peace Mass Transit bus marked 2258, was conveying passengers from Enugu to Nsukka and was said to be overtaking another vehicle when he collided with an oncoming ENTRACO bus.

Several bags belonging to the passengers littered the road as the FRSC rescue team and other sympathizers discovered four NYSC discharge certificates in the luggage.

Commercial bus drivers should be made to undertake an advanced drivers test.

The way they drive is a risk to passengers.

There are rules to overtaking - But not in Nigeria.

There should be an overhaul of our FRSC legislations. People die from avoidable causes in Nigeria, so sad.

That 9th mile road was bad when i served in enugu years back. The envmt was always dark as hell. The drivers should be careful while on that expressway.

I'm not surprised. The single-carriage expressway between Enugu and Nsukka is very dangerous. Many have written and pleaded with the government to make it a double-carriage way. 28 lives have just been added to the plea.

Indeed, it is a very sad story, a lot of issues are left unresolved! An evolution is what we require now, if not, we are yet to see the end of all this. My condolences goes to the affected families.

So sad. I have always advised people not to use peace mass transit. Their drivers are very reckless and i wonder if there is any safety training for drivers. Furthermore when a passenger tries to caution the driver, you only get insults back. PLEASE ADVISE YOUR PEOPLE NOT TO USE PEACE MASS TRANSIT

  Peace Mass Transit should be avoided by those who want to live long. The FRSC should start impounding their buses for over-speeding; they drive like they have immunity over accident. I can't remember ever overtaking their buses on the road.
  The director of that company should be cautioned against setting time limits for the drivers.
